Brain volumes and cortical thickness on MRI in the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER).

BACKGROUND: The Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER) was a multicenter randomized controlled trial that reported beneficial effects on cognition for a 2-year multimodal intervention (diet, exercise, cognitive training, vascular risk monitoring) versus control (general health advice). This study reports exploratory analyses of brain MRI measures. METHODS: FINGER targeted 1260 older individuals from the general Finnish population. Participants were 60-77 years old, at increased risk for dementia but without dementia/substantial cognitive i

Regional estimates of cortical thickness in brain areas involved in control of surgically restored limb movement in patients with tetraplegia.

Context/Objective: Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes atrophy of brain regions linked to motor function. We aimed to estimate cortical thickness in brain regions that control surgically restored limb movement in individuals with tetraplegia. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Sahlgrenska University hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden. Participants: Six individuals with tetraplegia who had undergone surgical restoration of grip function by surgical transfer of one elbow flexor (brachioradialis), to the paralyzed thumb flexor (flexor pollicis longus). All subjects were males, with a SCI at the C6 or C7

A comparison of brain volume and cortical thickness in excoriation (skin picking) disorder and trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder) in women.

Skin picking disorder (SPD) and trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder, or HPD) significantly overlap in terms of clinical features. However, few studies have directly compared structural brain data in these disorders. The aim of this study was to compare volumes of brain structures and cortical thickness in patients with SPD and HPD, and determine involvement of fronto-striatal pathways. Seventeen female SPD, 17 HPD and 15 healthy age-matched controls underwent clinical assessment and structural MRI imaging. Group differences were determined in brain volume and cortical thickness, controllin

Longitudinal changes in cortical thickness in children after traumatic brain injury and their relation to behavioral regulation and emotional control.

The purpose of this study was to assess patterns of cortical development over time in children who had sustained traumatic brain injury (TBI) as compared to children with orthopedic injury (OI), and to examine how these patterns related to emotional control and behavioral dysregulation, two common post-TBI symptoms. Cortical thickness was measured at approximately 3 and 18 months post-injury in 20 children aged 8.2-17.5 years who had sustained moderate-to-severe closed head injury and 21 children aged 7.4-16.7 years who had sustained OI. At approximately 3 months post-injury, the TBI group evi

Cortical thickness, surface area, and volume of the brain reward system in alcohol dependence: relationships to relapse and extended abstinence.

BACKGROUND: At least 60% of those treated for an alcohol use disorder will relapse. Empirical study of the integrity of the brain reward system (BRS) is critical to understanding the mechanisms of relapse as this collection of circuits is implicated in the development and maintenance of all forms of addictive disorders. This study compared thickness, surface area, and volume in neocortical components of the BRS among nonsmoking light-drinking controls (controls), individuals who remained abstinent and those who relapsed after treatment. METHODS: Seventy-five treatment-seeking alcohol-dependen

Associations between neonatal hypoglycaemia and brain volumes, cortical thickness and white matter microstructure in mid-childhood: An MRI study.

Neonatal hypoglycaemia is a common metabolic disorder that may cause brain damage, most visible in parieto-occipital regions on MRI in the acute phase. However, the long term effects of neonatal hypoglycaemia on the brain are not well understood. We investigated the association between neonatal hypoglycaemia and brain volumes, cortical thickness and white matter microstructure at 9-10 years. Children born at risk of neonatal hypoglycaemia at ≥ 36 weeks' gestation who took part in a prospective cohort study underwent brain MRI at 9-10 years. Neonatal hypoglycaemia was defined as at least one hy

Adult Tph2 knockout mice without brain serotonin have moderately elevated spine trabecular bone but moderately low cortical bone thickness.

Disruption of serotonin synthesis in neurons and the periphery by knockout (KO) of mouse genes for tryptophan hydroxylases (peripheral Tph1 and neuronal Tph2) has been claimed to decrease (Tph2 KO) and increase (Tph1 KO) bone mass. In this report, adult male and female Tph2 KO mice were observed to have elevated spine trabecular bone. Female Tph2 KO mice have reduced midshaft femur cortical bone thickness. Bone mass was normal in male and female Tph1 KO mice examined as part of a Tph1/Tph2 double knockout (DKO) mouse cohort.

Plasma biomarkers, brain amyloid pathology, and cortical thickness in a diverse middle-aged community cohort: the HCP-CoBRA study.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated plasma biomarker association with, and classification accuracies for, Aβ-PET and cortical thickness in the biracial HCP-CoBRA cohort (53% B/AA and 47% NHW). METHODS: In n=218 participants (age 62 [range: 57-71] years, 65% female and 15% Aβ PET-positive), plasma biomarkers (p-tau181, p-tau217, p-tau231, GFAP, NfL, Aβ42/Aβ40) were compared to Aβ-PET and MRI neuroimaging indicators. RESULTS: P-tau217 (Janssen and ALZpath [AUCs=0.915-0.919]) had high sensitivity and specificity (>85%) for Aβ-PET status. All biomarkers except p-tau231 ruled out Aβ-pathology (NPV>95%) bu

Irritable bowel syndrome and structural brain changes - A two-sample Mendelian randomization study of cortical thickness and surface area.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: the relationship between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and structural changes in various regional cortical areas remains unclear. Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to explore the potential association between IBS and structural brain changes. METHODS: genetically independent loci associated with IBS in individuals of European ancestry were selected as instrumental variants (IVs) from large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Outcome data were obtained from 34 subregions of the cerebral cortex in a population of 51,665 individuals. MR analysis was performed

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor Val66Met polymorphism affects cortical thickness of rostral anterior cingulate in patients with major depressive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The neuro-anatomical substrates of major depressive disorder (MDD) remain poorly understood. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene polymorphism (Val66Met/rs6265) is associated with neuro-plasticity and development. In the present study, we explore the influence of BDNF gene polymorphism on cortical thickness in nonelderly, first episode, drug-naive patients with MDD. METHODS: Two hundred and sixteen participants (105 MDD patients and 111 healthy controls) were divided into subgroups based on the BDNF genotype. High-resolution MRI was obtained in all participants. Association between olanzapine treatment and brain cortical thickness and gray/white matter contrast is moderated by cholesterol in psychotic disorders.

Altered cortical brain morphology is observed in psychotic disorders. Despite the importance of lipid homeostasis for healthy brain functioning, knowledge about its role in cortical alterations in psychosis is limited. In a sample of patients with psychotic disorders, we investigated the relationship between treatment with olanzapine (OLZ), and cortical thickness and gray/white matter intensity contrast, and the association between these measures and serum lipid levels. We included 33 OLZ users, 19 unmedicated psychotic patients and 76 healthy controls (HC). Data on serum lipids and cortical m

Brain structure in triple X syndrome: regional gray matter volume and cortical thickness in adult women with 47,XXX karyotype.

BACKGROUND: Changes in the brain structure of women with Triple X syndrome (karyotype 47,XXX) have been described in a few studies to date, including reduced total brain volume and regional reductions in gray substance in cortical and subcortical areas. However, the empirical evidence from adults is very limited and group comparison on a voxel-wise basis for gray matter volume and cortical thickness is still missing. METHODS: Using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and surface-based morphometry (SBM), we investigated regional gray matter changes in a sample of n = 20 adult women (aged 18-49 years

Structural-covariance networks identify topology-based cortical-thickness changes in children with persistent executive function impairments after traumatic brain injury.

Paediatric traumatic brain injury (pTBI) results in inconsistent changes to regional morphometry of the brain across studies. Structural-covariance networks represent the degree to which the morphology (typically cortical-thickness) of cortical-regions co-varies with other regions, driven by both biological and developmental factors. Understanding how heterogeneous regional changes may influence wider cortical network organization may more appropriately capture prognostic information in terms of long term outcome following a pTBI. The current study aimed to investigate the relationships betwee

Early childhood cumulative risk is associated with decreased global brain measures, cortical thickness, and cognitive functioning in school-age children.

Children exposed to multiple risk factors early in life are increasingly more likely to suffer from a host of cognitive impairments across development. However, little work has identified the neurobiological mechanisms linking early cumulative risk and cognitive functioning. The current study examined the impact of cumulative risk assessed during early childhood on neural and cognitive outcomes measured 3 years later when children were school-aged. Participants included 63 children assessed during preschool (age: M = 4.23 years, SD = 0.84) and 3 years later (age: M = 7.19 years, SD = 0.89). Ea

Cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with cortical thickness of medial temporal brain areas associated with spatial cognition in young but not older adults.

Cardiorespiratory fitness has a potent effect on neurocognitive health, especially regarding the hippocampal memory system. However, less is known about the impact of cardiorespiratory fitness on medial temporal lobe extrahippocampal neocortical regions. Specifically, it is unclear how cardiorespiratory fitness modulates these brain regions in young adulthood and if these regions are differentially related to cardiorespiratory fitness in young versus older adults. The primary goal of this study was to investigate if cardiorespiratory fitness predicted medial temporal lobe cortical thickness wh

White Matter Organization and Cortical Thickness Differ Among Active Duty Service Members With Chronic Mild, Moderate, and Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

Abstract This study compared findings from whole-brain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) among 90 Active Duty Service Members with chronic mild traumatic brain injury (TBI; n = 52), chronic moderate-to-severe TBI (n = 17), and TBI-negative controls (n = 21). Data were collected on a Philips Ingenia 3T MRI with DTI in 32 directions. Results demonstrated that history of TBI was associated with differences in white matter microstructure, white matter volume, and cortical thickness in both mild TBI and moderate-to-severe TBI groups relative to controls.

Interactive effects of gender and sexual orientation on cortical thickness, surface area and gray matter volume: a structural brain MRI study.

BACKGROUND: Testosterone is thought to play a crucial role in sexual differentiation of the brain, and sexual orientation is programmed into our brain structures even when we are still fetuses. Although gender and sexual orientation differences have been shown respectively in many brain structures, the mechanism underlying the sexual differentiation of the brain is still unknown. The study is to investigate the interactive effects of gender and sexual orientation on cerebral structures in homosexual and heterosexual people. METHODS: Sexual orientation was evaluated by the Kinsey scale. We col
