Differential diagnosis in the material was based on the neurological and radiological findings made in 45 patients with third-ventricle tumours and 133 with subtentorial tumours. No clinical syndrome has been found which could help in reliable diagnosis concerning either of these locations of the tumour. Of decisive significance for the correct localization of tumours was ventriculography which established the diagnosis in 42 cases of third-ventricle tumours and 103 cases of subtentorial tumours. The most difficult problem was recognition of the relation of the subtentorial tumours to the brai

Transgenic mice expressing the large T-antigen of the simian virus 40 (SV 40) under the control of 1) the enhancer of Moloney murine sarcoma virus (MSV) and 2) the SV 40 promoter develop undifferentiated neuroectodermal tumors located in the midline of the dorsal brain surface, abnormalities in lens fiber differentiation and retinal dysplasia. In this study the brain neoplasms of six adult animals and the brain of one 11-day old mouse were examined by conventional histology and immunocytochemical demonstration of S-antigen, rod-opsin, neuron-specific enolase, neurofilaments (160 and 200 kDa) a

Intracranial lesions can present a diagnostic challenge in patients without previously known immunosuppression. When focal neurological signs and seizures occur in a patient with no established medical history, an expansive brain lesion may be initially interpreted as a neoplasm, influencing early clinical decisions regarding the extent of supportive measures. However, opportunistic infections, such as cerebral toxoplasmosis, should remain on the differential diagnosis - particularly after consideration of the patient's background and potential epidemiological risks. We present the case of a m

Noonan syndrome (NS) is associated with short stature. Growth hormone treatment has been FDA approved for use in these patients. Children with NS are at a higher risk of developing benign and malignant proliferative disorders, primary brain tumors being one of them. Since growth hormone therapy can worsen the tumor burden, screening with a brain MRI prior to growth hormone initiation in NS patients is strongly recommended. Here we present two NS patients who developed different primary brain tumors while being on growth hormone therapy.

Atrial myxomas are the most common primary neoplasm of the heart. Due to their mass effect, they may lead to dysfunction of the heart or mitral valve. Rarely, neoplastic fragments may embolize or a thrombus secondary to stasis may form, which can infarct downstream structures (e.g., the brain). We report the case of a 59-year-old man presenting with headaches, visual changes, and word-finding difficulty secondary to multifocal brain lesions that were identified on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. After an extensive workup, the etiology of the patient's neurological symptoms

We aimed to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of 131I-labeled 81C6 in patients with leptomeningeal neoplasms or brain tumor resection cavities with subarachnoid communication and to identify any objective responses. 81C6 is a murine IgG monoclonal antibody that reacts with tenascin in gliomas/carcinomas but does not react with normal adult brain. 131I-labeled 81C6 delivers intrathecal (IT) radiation to these neoplasms. This study was a Phase I trial in which patients were treated with a single IT dose of 131I-labeled 81C6. Cohorts of three to six patients were treated with escalating

Here, we report the case of a 65-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with paresthesia, psychomotor retardation, and dysarthria. Contrast-enhanced brain MRI revealed a solitary, contrast-enhancing mass in the right head of the caudate nucleus with extensive perifocal edema, raising a primary differential diagnosis of glioblastoma versus metastasis, among other possibilities. Prior to surgical removal of the suspected glioblastoma, the patient underwent additional diffusion tensor imaging and research MRI, including multifrequency magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) to gener

BACKGROUND: Methylation analysis has become a powerful diagnostic tool in modern neurooncology. This technique is valuable to diagnose new brain tumor types.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the MRI and histological pattern of neuroepithelial tumor with PLAGL1 gene fusion.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present a 6-year-old patient with small right frontal intraaxial tumor causing drug resistant epilepsy. Despite indolent preoperative clinical course and MRI features suggesting glioneuronal tumor, histological evaluation revealed characteristics of high-grade glioma, ependymoma and neuroblastoma.

This article discusses the gross and microscopic pathology of intracranial neoplasms. Primary intracranial neoplasms include tumors of the brain parenchyma; meninges; and rest of mesenchymal, epithelial, and germ cell derivation. The concept of tumor malignancy for primary central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms is somewhat different from that for systemic tumors. Although the capacity to metastasize is a defining feature of systemic malignancies and metastasis to the brain is a relatively common occurrence, primary CNS neoplasms rarely metastasize outside the CNS.

OBJECTIVE: Few molecular targets are both consistently and selectively expressed in a majority of central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms. Receptor tyrosine kinases have been implicated in brain tumor oncogenesis. We previously isolated one such receptor, discoidin domain receptor-1 (DDR1), from high-grade pediatric brain tumors. Here, we analyze the cellular origin and distribution of DDR1 expression in human brain tumors and its expression in tumor cells relative to surrounding brain.
METHODS: By use of a digoxigenin-labeled DDR1 riboprobe, we investigated the expression of DDR1 messenger ri

In rats, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish malignant reticuloses from astrocytomas in routine histopathological assessment. In the present study, four spontaneous brain neoplasms developing in the cerebrum of one Wistar Hannover rat and three Sprague-Dawley rats were immunohistochemically examined using microglia and macrophage markers. Histopathologically, these neoplasms were localized mainly in the cerebral cortex, hypothalamus or piriform lobe, and the portions showing solid growth did not show characteristic cellular arrangement but had an indistinct boundary with the surrounding b

Extra-axial brain tumors are the most common adult intracranial neoplasms and encompass a broad spectrum of pathologic subtypes. Meningiomas are the most common extra-axial brain tumor (approximately one-third of all intracranial neoplasms) and typically present as slowly growing dural-based masses. Benign meningiomas are very common, and may occasionally be difficult to differentiate from more aggressive subtypes (i.e., atypical or malignant varieties) or other dural-based masses with more aggressive biologic behavior (e.g., hemangiopericytoma or dural-based metastases). Many neoplasms that t

Brain neoplasms are a common cause of childhood morbidity and mortality. Neurological presentations usually result in a relatively early diagnosis and management of the neoplasms. Non neurological manifestations may result in later detection and possibly a higher eventual morbidity and mortality. Hence, the importance of a keen index of suspicion in assessment of cases to detect subtle neurological signs and symptoms. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging has been found to be especially useful in the definition of brain neoplasms. In this paper, four cases with non neurological manifestations are

Mutations in the chromatin remodeling gene ARID1A have recently been identified in the majority of ovarian clear cell carcinomas (OCCCs). To determine the prevalence of mutations in other tumor types, we evaluated 759 malignant neoplasms including those of the pancreas, breast, colon, stomach, lung, prostate, brain, and blood (leukemias). We identified truncating mutations in 6% of the neoplasms studied; nontruncating somatic mutations were identified in an additional 0.4% of neoplasms. Mutations were most commonly found in gastrointestinal samples with 12 of 119 (10%) colorectal and 10 of 100

INTRODUCTION: Among brain tumours, those arising from the deep brain are rare. In many cases they are low-grade astrocytomas. But primitive neuroectodermal tumours, ganglion cell tumours, oligodendrogliomas, lymphomas, and germinal neoplasms can also grow up from the basal ganglia and thalamic region. In other occasions peripheral neoplasms developing in neighbouring structures like the cerebral lobes, the ventricular walls, choroidal plexus, pineal gland and the hypothalamic-chiasmatic-suprasellar region can spread to the deep brain.
IMAGING: Imaging cannot reliably indicate that a histologi

AIMS: The purpose of this research was to calculate and compare standardised incidence and mortality ratios in young adults, based on the data published by the population-based cancer registry of Metropolitan Lima.
METHOD: A secondary analysis was carried out on the data published by the population-based cancer registry of Metropolitan Lima in its last five volumes. Calculating the standardised incidence ratio, in accordance with the World Health Organization's standard population, was done using the direct method, and the annual percentage change was calculated using the Joinpoint Regression

BACKGROUND: Primary neoplasms of the nasal cavity and sinuses are uncommon in domestic animals, most of which are of epithelial origin, being adenocarcinoma the most common tumor diagnosed in this region. Some malignant nasal cavity neoplasms may invade the brain causing clinical neurological signs, as well as purulent nasal secretion and epistaxis.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A case of neoplasm is reported in a 14-year-old pincher presenting dyspnea, epistaxis, and neurological alterations. Necropsy revealed the presence of a mass in the oral cavity vestibule, and another in the whole nasal cavity wit

Primary central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms are uncommonly diagnosed in cats. The majority of primary feline CNS neoplasms described in the veterinary literature consist of meningioma and glioma occurring mainly in the brain and less often in the spinal cord. Although most neoplasms can be diagnosed based on routine histologic evaluation, less typical tumors need to be further characterized using immunohistochemistry. This review compiles the relevant information about the most common primary CNS neoplasms of cats available in the veterinary literature, aiming to serve as a converging sourc

During the last 11 years, 144 nonlymphoreticular neoplasms were diagnosed in exfoliative cytology specimens obtained from patients younger than 17 years of age. Neuroblastoma was the single most common neoplasm (30 cases). Other categories of malignant neoplasms were primary bone tumors (30 cases), soft-tissue sarcomas (25 cases), brain tumors (25 cases) and epithelial neoplasms (7 cases). Of the 780 cytologic specimens, 335 were positive for malignant cells. Serous effusions provided most of the positive specimens from patients with neuroblastoma, germ-cell tumors and bone sarcomas.
