Although there has been much research on the factors associated with breast density, most studies did not include Hispanic women or relied on semiquantitative methods of assessing density. Using data from the Chicago Breast Health Project, which targeted Hispanic women and assessed density quantitatively using full-field digital mammography, we assessed cross-sectional associations of breast cancer risk factors with percentage of breast density. Between November 2000 and June 2002, 296 Hispanic women recruited from three community health centers in Chicago, Illinois completed a health and life

We evaluated whether a 76-locus polygenic risk score (PRS) and Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) breast density were independent risk factors within three studies (1643 case patients, 2397 control patients) using logistic regression models. We incorporated the PRS odds ratio (OR) into the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC) risk-prediction model while accounting for its attributable risk and compared five-year absolute risk predictions between models using area under the curve (AUC) statistics. All statistical tests were two-sided. BI-RADS density and PRS were indepen

The purpose of this study is to determine whether it is possible to make breast cancer screening more efficient in those with dense breasts. Over 12 states require that patients with dense breasts receive notification about their breast density in lay letters that are sent after the screening mammogram. Some of these letters advise patients to speak with their primary care providers about the possibility of supplemental breast cancer screening. We sought to determine whether primary care providers can discuss breast density and recommend supplemental breast cancer screening using the density o

BACKGROUND: The imaging parameters that mandate further diagnostic workup in focal asymmetric breast densities are not clearly defined. To identify indications for further workup in Focal asymmetric breast densities (FABD) by doing ultrasonography.
METHODS: One-hundred women underwent breast ultrasonography after incidental discovery of FABD on mammograms. Mammograms and sonograms were evaluated for lesion location, associated calcifications, architectural distortion and change from previous examination when available.
RESULTS: Twenty three patients had abnormal sonographic findings and the

Background: Many states have enacted breast density laws, requiring that women be informed of their breast density status; however there is currently no consensus for screening guidelines or recommendations for women with dense breasts. The objective of this study is to access physician views about breast density and their practices for breast cancer screening of women with dense breasts in light of breast density laws. Materials and Methods: Setting: Academic medical centers, community and private practices mostly in New York City. Participants: Primary care providers (PCPs), radiologists and

PURPOSE: We examined whether obesity and a history of diabetes, hypertension, and elevated cholesterol, individually and in combination, are associated with breast density, a strong risk factor for breast cancer.
METHODS: We measured percent density and dense area using a computer-assisted method (n = 191; age range = 40-61 years). We used linear regression models to examine the associations of each metabolic condition and the number of metabolic conditions (zero, one, two, and three or four conditions) with breast density.
RESULTS: Among individual metabolic conditions, only high blood chol

Breast density (BD) is one of the major risk factors for breast cancer (BC) and has the potential to be used as an early marker. Puberty is a critical period for carcinogenesis, and identifying events that modify BD during this stage could aid in understanding future BC risk. The consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has been associated with BC; however, evidence of their effect on BD, particularly in adolescents, is lacking. To assess the association between the intake of UPFs during the peripubertal period and BD measured at 4 years after menarche onset, absolute fibroglandular volume

BACKGROUND: A positive lumpectomy margin after breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is a significant predictor for ipsilateral cancer recurrence. The MarginProbe, a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved device for intraoperative assessment of lumpectomy margins, is associated with a reduction in re-excision surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship of mammographic breast density (MBD) and clinicopathologic characteristics with margin status in women undergoing BCS with the MarginProbe.
METHODS: The institutional database was queried for patients with breast cancer who had BCS wi

OBJECTIVES: We reviewed the literature on breast density knowledge and breast density awareness to explore what challenges are faced by this area of research.
METHOD: A review of PubMED, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases was performed. Studies were published in peer-reviewed journals (in all years available) and written in English. The broad search terms used were ["breast density"] AND ["knowledge" OR "awareness"]. Eligible articles were included in the final analysis after meeting the following inclusion criteria: (1) the records had to quantitatively examine and report breast density knowledg

Mammographic density (MD) is a well-established risk factor for breast cancer. Whether MD influences the tumor phenotype remains to be clarified. Previous studies are highly inconsistent and most lack important covariate information. This is a case-only study within a population-based case-control study. Cases were all postmenopausal women, aged 50-74 years, with incident breast cancer, diagnosed 1993-1995, and with no history of previous cancer (n = 2,720). 1,747 women with mammograms and information on tumor characteristics were included in analyses. MD was assessed using a computer-assisted

Background: The utility of incorporating detailed family history into breast cancer risk prediction hinges on its independent contribution to breast cancer risk. We evaluated associations between detailed family history and breast cancer risk while accounting for breast density. Methods: We followed 222,019 participants ages 35 to 74 in the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium, of whom 2,456 developed invasive breast cancer. We calculated standardized breast cancer risks within joint strata of breast density and simple (1st-degree female relative) or detailed (first-degree, second-degree, or f

Breast density is a strong and prevalent risk factor for breast cancer and it significantly reduces the sensitivity of mammography to detect the disease. Inconsistency in breast density notification policy across screening programs in Australia has resulted in significant health promotion challenges, with low awareness and knowledge of breast density as a risk factor and confusion regarding assessment and risk management for women with dense breasts. Australian breast density notification policy has recently been revised and now recommends women be informed of their breast density; however, th

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant condition caused by neurofibromin haploinsufficiency due to pathogenic variants in the NF1 gene. Tumor predisposition has long been associated with NF1, and an increased breast cancer (BC) incidence and reduced survival have been reported in recent years for women with NF1. As breast density is another known independent risk factor for BC, this study aims to evaluate the variability of breast density in patients with NF1 compared to the general population. Mammograms from 98 NF1 women affected by NF1, and enrolled onto our monocentric BC

BACKGROUND: High mammographic breast density (MBD) is a strong risk factor for breast cancer development, but the biological mechanisms underlying MBD are unclear. Lipids play important roles in cell differentiation, and perturbations in lipid metabolism are implicated in cancer development. Nevertheless, no study has applied untargeted lipidomics to profile the lipidome of MBD. Through this study, our goal is to characterize the lipidome of MBD in premenopausal women.
METHODS: Premenopausal women were recruited during their annual screening mammogram at the Washington University School of Me

Background: Breast cancer incidence is lower in many U.S. ethnic minority and foreign-born population groups. Investigating whether migration and acculturation patterns in risk are reflected in disease biomarkers may help to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Methods: We compared the distribution of breast cancer risk factors across U.S.-born white, African American and Hispanic women, and foreign-born Hispanic women (n = 477, ages 40-64 years, 287 born in Caribbean countries). We used linear regression models to examine the associations of migration history and linguistic acculturation with

BACKGROUND: Mammographic breast density is a useful marker for breast cancer risk, as breast density is considered one of the strongest breast cancer risk factors. The study objective was to evaluate and compare mammographic breast density in infertile and parous women, as infertility may be associated with high breast density and cancer occurrence.
METHODS: This study evaluated mammographic breast density using two different systems, BIRADS and Boyd. A selected patient population of 151 women with primary infertility (case group) was compared to 154 parous women who had at least one previous
