Relationships of barriers and facilitators to breast self-examination, mammography, and clinical breast examination in a worksite population.

The American Cancer Society recommends a regimen for breast cancer screening that includes mammograms, clinical breast examination, and breast self-examination. Compliance with breast cancer screening guidelines has been linked to a number of barriers and facilitators. These barriers and facilitators seem to lie within the cognitive framework and generalized beliefs of women, and in the situational contexts in which they lead their lives. A comprehensive study was designed to investigate variables related to breast cancer screening behaviors (breast self-examination, mammography, and clinical

The effects of self-reinforcement and peer-reinforcement on the practice of breast self-examination.

Four months after learning breast self-examination (BSE), 169 sorority women assigned to one of three conditions (No Reinforcement, Self-Reinforcement or Peer-Reinforcement) were compared on BSE frequency subsequent to the training. Participants in both of the reinforcement conditions had agreed to a specified reward after each month's BSE, which was either self-delivered (Self-Reinforcement condition) or delivered by a partner (Peer-Reinforcement condition). Analysis of covariance revealed a significant difference among conditions and a Newman-Keuls test demonstrated that participants in both

Breast self-examination competency: an analysis of self-reported practice and associated characteristics.

Of 308 Baltimore, Maryland women surveyed by telephone, 76.3 per cent reported having performed breast self-examination (BSE) during the last year, with only 35 per cent reporting monthly BSE. Four BSE ability scores showed that most women had little knowledge of the proper BSE technique. Utilization factors, socioeconomic status, and knowledge/attitude about cancer were not related to BSE competency. Higher BSE competency scores were related to performing BSE at the recommended interval, having been taught the procedure by a health professional, and perceived confidence in BSE practice were a

Edinburgh breast education campaign on breast cancer and breast self-examination: was it worth while?

A health education campaign was carried out at the start of a large trial of screening for breast cancer in Edinburgh. After preliminary studies the campaign concentrated on talks to small groups of women by specially trained health visitors. Over a year, 12,000 women attended. Systematic evaluation after 12 months showed that selected women who heard the talks were more knowledgeable about breast cancer, and a random sample of women in Edinburgh had a small but significant improvement in knowledge compared with women in Aberdeen. However, the random sample did not report an increase in the pr

Awareness and practice of breast self examination among malaysian women with breast cancer.

Breast self-examination (BSE) is a self-generated, non-invasive and non-irradiative method of breast cancer detection. This paper documents Malaysian women's awareness and practice of regular BSE as a potent breast cancer detection tool. A pre-test post-test questionnaire survey on women diagnosed with breast cancer (n=66) was conducted. Descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests were performed to correlate demographic variables, knowledge and regular practice of BSE. Findings showed that 80% of the breast cancer survivors self-detected the breast lumps, despite a high 85% of these women repo

Breast self-examination and survival from breast cancer: a prospective follow-up study.

A prospective study was conducted to investigate the possible effect of breast self-examination (BSE) on cause-of-death-specific survival rate of breast cancer patients. Six hundred and four breast cancer patients diagnosed in 1984-1986 in Finland, and applying for breast prostheses, were interviewed about both their BSE practices prior to cancer diagnosis and the actual method of tumor detection. No clear differences were observed in the stage distribution or cause of death-specific five-year survival rates between individuals with different BSE practices. After adjustment for potential confo

Evaluating the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Breast Self-Examination.

This viewpoint explores the role of conversational artificial intelligence (AI) in educating the public on breast self-examination, using an interaction with DeepSeek AI as an example, where 6 AI-generated responses to commonly asked questions were compared with guidelines published by organizations such as the World Health Organization. Although the AI provided clear, accessible, and evidence-aligned responses consistent with professional guidance, limitations included oversimplification and absence of multimedia resources. These findings suggest that AI can support public health education bu

Psychological distress, health beliefs, and frequency of breast self-examination.

Although monthly breast self-examination (BSE) is recommended for early breast cancer detection, most women do not comply. Few studies have examined the impact of psychological distress on BSE frequency. Recent research suggests that it may be particularly important to examine the role of distress in the recently identified phenomenon of BSE overperformance (> 1/month). One hundred thirty-five healthy women with and without family histories of breast cancer completed sociodemographic, health belief, general and cancer-specific psychological distress, and BSE frequency questionnaires. Predicting mammography and breast self-examination in African American women.

Breast cancer mortality is significantly greater in African American women than in their Caucasian counterparts. The purpose of this study was to identify variables associated with the breast cancer screening behaviors of mammography utilization and breast self-examination (BSE) in a convenience sample of low income African American women. A total of 328 African American women, living in a large midwestern metropolitan area, who were at < or = 150% of poverty level, and between the ages of 45 and 64 years were included in this study. Data were collected over a period of 18 months. Predisposing

Effectiveness of breast self-examination prompts on oral contraceptive packaging.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine if a breast self-examination (BSE) "prompt" on oral contraceptive pill (OCP) packages would improve the frequency and timing of BSE among women who use OCPs. METHODS: Women between 13 and 40 years of age who were initiating, restarting, or continuing use of OCPs completed a baseline survey that assessed health behavior and practices. All received BSE education, and then were randomized to take either OCPs with a BSE prompt or regularly packaged OCPs (without BSE prompt) for three cycles. Three months later, subjects completed a follow-up

Understanding lesbians' healthcare behaviour: the case of breast self-examination.

Lesbians' risk of breast cancer is a much-debated issue in health research because lesbians are believed to be at higher risk of the disease than are heterosexual women. This belief is based upon particular risk factors for breast cancer, which are said to be more prevalent in lesbians; and upon differences in preventive health behaviours: in particular, lesbians are said to be less likely to practise breast self-examination (BSE). This paper presents data collected as part of the UK Lesbians and Healthcare Survey (n = 1066) focusing on lesbians who report never practising BSE (n = 218, 20%) a

Randomized trial of breast self-examination in Shanghai: final results.

BACKGROUND: Among women who practice breast self-examination (BSE), breast cancers may be detected when they are at an earlier stage and are smaller than in women who do not practice BSE. However, the efficacy of breast self-examination for decreasing breast cancer mortality is unproven. This study was conducted to determine whether an intensive program of BSE instruction will reduce the number of women dying of breast cancer. METHODS: From October 1989 through October 1991, 266,064 women associated with 519 factories in Shanghai were randomly assigned to a BSE instruction group (132,979 wome

Inter-agency collaboration: teaching breast self-examination to black women.

Excessive breast cancer mortality and limited use of mammography among black women point to a need for breast cancer education and increased use of breast self-examination (BSE) and other screening procedures. The Illinois Cancer Council (ICC), a consortial comprehensive cancer center, and the Chicago Chapter of the National Black Nurses' Association (CCNBNA) developed and piloted an educational project to increase black women's knowledge about breast cancer and their use of BSE and other screening methods. This paper describes the steps leading up to this collaborative effort, the procedures
