Efficacy of Bronchial Washing and Brushing Cytology in the Diagnosis of Non-Neoplastic Lung Diseases.

Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy is often the initial technique for diagnosis of lung and bronchial tumors. Many studies have shown the high accuracy rate of bronchial washing and brushing cytology in the evaluation of neoplastic and non-neoplastic bronchopulmonary lesions. The aim of this study is to emphasize the value of the bronchial cytologic findings for diagnosis of non-neoplastic bronchopulmonary lesions. In a cross-sectional study, we retrieved all cases with bronchial washing and brushing cytology from 21 Mach 2014 to 21 December 2015. The slides of 100 patients with negative cytolog

No demonstrable effect of sobrerol as an expectorant in patients with stable chronic bronchial diseases.

A randomized double-blind cross-over study compared the clinical effectiveness of a 14-day treatment with 400 mg X day-1 of sobrerol and placebo in 23 patients with stable chronic bronchial disease. During the seven week trial, subjective symptoms and findings (cough frequency and severity, difficulty in raising sputum, dyspnoea) were recorded, pulmonary function tests performed and sputum physical characteristics (24-h sputum volume, purulence, cell concentration, protein, sputum dry weight and "apparent" viscosity) determined on a regular basis. Side-effects were closely monitored. Both subj

Bronchial Dieulafoy disease: A case report and literature review.

Bronchial Dieulafoy disease (BDD) is a rare disease characterized by abnormal dilation or malformation of the submucosal artery of the bronchus. This disease features a low incidence, but its bleeding is rapid and occult, which easily leads to delayed diagnosis, endangers life, and is difficult to handle clinically. Currently, its diagnosis mainly relies on bronchoscopy and angiography, and treatment methods include endoscopic treatment, interventional embolization, and surgical operation. There are still many unsolved problems regarding the exact pathogenesis, treatment timing, treatment meth

Diagnosis and Treatment of Bronchial Dieulafoy's Disease: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchial Dieulafoy's disease (BDD) comprises rare vascular malformations. This study analyzes a series of BDD patients diagnosed through combined bronchial computed tomography arteriography (CTA) and bronchoscopy, addressing critical gaps in diagnostic standardization and therapeutic decision-making. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of patients who underwent CTA and bronchoscopy for mild to massive and unexplained recurrent hemoptysis in two centers during a 6-year period. RESULTS: Thirty-six patients were diagnosed with BDD by bronchial CTA and bronchoscopy. Abnormal

[Prevention of progression of allergic bronchial asthma as an occupational disease].

Since January 1st, 2021, termination of a harmful activity as a requirement for its recognition as an occupational disease (OD) has been abolished in Germany. This also includes the OD No. 4301 in accordance with Appendix 1 of the Occupational Diseases Ordinance (ODO) (obstructive respiratory diseases caused by allergenic substances). There has already been a significant increase in the number of diseases recognized under this OD. In this article, we present two patients with allergic (in the second case report mixed-form) bronchial asthma, in whom a medically easily preventable disease progre

Follow-up bronchoscopy in a child with bronchial dielafoy disease.

We previously reported an 11-year-old girl with Bronchial Dieulafoy disease who presented with an endobronchial lesion. She had an underlying bronchial vascular malformation for which she underwent embolization, and had remained asymptomatic since. On follow-up, a near-total resolution of the endobronchial lesion was observed.

[Coping with the disease phenomenon and peculiarities of the course of bronchial asthma].

The aim of the study was to evaluate coping stratages (the degree of coping with the disease, CD) in 239 patients with moderate or severe bronchial asthma (BA). A method making it possible to calculate coping with the disease index (CDI) and thus to divide the patients into groups with a high (1) or low (2) degree of CD, was used. In addition, the levels of sputum eosinophilia, bronchial permeability, and pulmonary hemodynamics, were studied in both groups by two control examinations (after 6 and 10 to 12 months). The absence of severe cases of BA, stable results achieved during the first stag

[Bronchial erosion of mediastinal lymphadenopathy associates with Hodgkin's disease].

INTRODUCTION: Erosion of mediastinal adenopathy into the bronchial tree is classically associated with tuberculosis. We describe two cases of of such bronchial erosion with Hodgkin's disease. CASE REPORT: The first case was of a seventy-year old man with a history of pulmonary silicosis. A sub-carenal mass was identified during investigation of chronic cough. The bronchoscopy revealed an inflammatory stenosis due to Hodgkin's disease. The second case was of a thirteen-year old child whose Hodgkin's disease was thought to be in remission following treatment. The erosion of mediastinal adenopat

[Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial colonization/infection].

BACTERIAL FLORA IN THE SUBGLOTTAL AIRWAYS: In healthy non-smoking subjects, the subglottal airways are sterile. Inversely, bacteria are often isolated from the sublottal airways in patients with obstructive or non-obstructive chronic bronchitis, both during and between acute exacerbations. The significance of this bacterial colonization/infection, its natural history, and its impact on the course of chronic lung disease is poorly understood. BETWEEN EXACERBATIONS: 30 to 40% of all patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a stable situation without recent antibiotic therapy harbor

[Two cases of Kimura's disease associated with bronchial asthma].

We encountered two rare cases of Kimura's disease associated with bronchial asthma presenting eosinophilia and hyperimmunoglobulinemia E. Patient 1 was a 26-year-old man who had been admitted to our hospital with recurrent increase in left parotid mass in May 1997. He had previously undergone surgery for local excision at another hospital in September 1987; the excised specimens were re-evaluated and the diagnosis of Kimura's disease was confirmed. Because the patient was suffering from an acute asthma attack on admission, prednisolone (PSL) 30 mg/day was administered orally. PSL reduced the p

Atypical bronchoplasty to lung cancer and benign bronchial disease.

Twenty-one cases of atypical bronchoplasty were selected from a series of 125 tracheobronchoplastic procedures by the same surgeon between 1979 and 1993 and were reviewed to assess the indications and technical problems. The procedures were classified as follows: Type A (3 cases) was anastomosis between the right main and lower bronchi with upper and middle lobe resection. Type B (4 cases) was anastomosis between the left main and upper segmental bronchi with resection of the lower lobe and lingula or between the left main bronchus and the basal bronchus with resection of the upper lobe and su

A critical evaluation of bronchial hygiene in pediatric pulmonary disease.

The variables inherent in analyzing the effectiveness of modalities used to achieve bronchial hygiene are numerous. Treatments may be given in a variety of settings, including intensive-care units, pediatric wards, respiratiory therapy departments, physical therapy departments, chronic-care hospitals, special education centers, and patient homes. Treatments are administered by a variety of medical professionals, allied health personnel, and lay volunteers. Motivation of the care providers as well as of the patients may vary greatly. Also, efforts are needed to study patients at comparable stag

Laryngeal, Tracheal, and Bronchial Disease in the Mucopolysaccharidoses: Endoscopic Study.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are genetically determined diseases, leading to a deficiency of enzymes in the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) degradation pathway. The accumulation of GAG occurs in connective tissue in various organs and systems of the body, including the larynx, trachea, and bronchi. Respiratory symptoms are common and severe in these patients, and respiratory disease is a frequent cause of death. A cross-sectional study with flexible bronchoscopy was conducted in 30 MPS patients (6 MPS I, 8 MPS II, 2 MPS III, 3 MPS IV-A, and 11 MPS VI). Only four patients (13.33%) had a normal airway; n

Bronchial artery hypertrophy is correlated with coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial arteries support the systemic pulmonary vasculature and physiologically communicate with pulmonary arteries and coronary arteries. While there is evidence supporting the link between pulmonary diseases and bronchial artery hypertrophy (BAH), few data on the correlation between coronary artery disease (CAD) and BAH have been published. PURPOSE: To evaluate a possible association between BAH and CAD in patients without known pulmonary diseases undergoing computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study was approved by the loc

Bronchial hyperreactivity and allergic status in inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Despite the known systemic manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and a large number of reports associating lung disease and IBD, the frequency of atopy and bronchial hyperreactivity (BHR) in IBD remains obscure. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of abnormal pulmonary function tests, BHR and the atopic status in patients with IBD. METHODS: Thirty patients with IBD (19 with ulcerative colitis and 11 with Crohn's disease; 19 male, 11 female) and 16 controls without any gastrointestinal disease (9 female, 7 male) were included.
