A 48-year-old male had adenocarcinoma of the right upper lung lobe that invaded the lower trachea. The right upper lobe, the carina, and 5 rings of the lower trachea were resected. The carina was reconstructed using end-to-end anastomosis between the trachea and right intermediate bronchus, with the left main bronchus anastomosed to the side wall of the intermediate bronchus. Two months after surgery, the right intermediate bronchus developed bronchomalacia and the tracheal anastomosis granulatory stenosis. Bronchomalacia was treated with 2 expandable metallic stents, and granulatory stenosis

Fifty-eight infants and children with various tracheobronchial obstructions were surgically treated at Kobe Children's Hospital between 1980 and 1991. The lesions included subglottic stenosis (24), congenital tracheal stenosis (9), tracheomalacia (15), bronchomalacia (6), and others (4). The operative procedures included laryngotracheoplasty using costal cartilage or anterior cricoid split for subglottic stenosis, tracheoplasty with costal cartilage graft for extensive tracheal stenosis, aortopexy for tracheomalacia, and external stenting or bronchial resection with tracheo-bronchial anastomos

PURPOSE: To assess forced-expiratory bronchial collapsibility in healthy volunteers by using multidetector computed tomography (CT) and to compare the results with the current diagnostic criterion for bronchomalacia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The institutional review board approved this HIPAA-compliant study. Following informed consent, 51 healthy volunteers with normal pulmonary function and no history of smoking were imaged by using a 64-detector row scanner with spirometric monitoring at total lung capacity and during forced exhalation. The total study population (in whom both main bronchi we

Bronchomalacia, the weakening of bronchial cartilage, is a common cause of cough in dogs. The gold standard for diagnosis of bronchomalacia is bronchoscopy; however, fluoroscopy is often used as a preliminary diagnostic test due to its noninvasiveness. The normal amount of bronchial collapse in healthy dogs using fluoroscopy has not been previously established, with some authors citing <25%. The aims of this prospective and retrospective analytical observational study were to determine the normal amount of airway collapse in healthy animals, the amount of airway collapse in dogs with chronic c

Tracheal and airway collapse (bronchomalacia) are common causes of chronic cough in middle-aged to older dogs in which weakening of cartilage within the respiratory system leads to narrowing of airways, irritation, inflammation, partial to complete airway obstruction, and other secondary effects. Tracheomalacia occurs in small-breed dogs, whereas bronchomalacia can occur in any size dog. Successful treatment involves correct identification of the problem, recognition of concurrent disease processes, and appropriate medical therapy. Surgical intervention and intraluminal stenting are readily av

The results of examination and the course of expiratory stenosis were studied in 15 children, 3 of them suffered from bronchomalacia of the left main bronchus. Bronchoscopy and poly-positional radioscopy with contrast study of the trachea and the large bronchi are the principal diagnostic methods in this disease. Sclerosing therapy was carried out in III degree expiratory stenosis. Two patients with bronchomalacia of the main bronchus and cystic lung hypoplasia underwent pulmonectomy with treatment of the main bronchus at the site of its branching off from the tracheal bifurcation. The results

AIM: To stress the importance of considering Laryngo-tracheo-bronchomalacia (LTBM) as a cause of death in infancy and early childhood.
METHODS: A case of Tracheo-bronchomalacia diagnosed at autopsy is presented, with a short review of the literature.
RESULTS: The condition causes functional weakness of the airways due to congenital or acquired abnormalities of airway cartilage. The etiology of the congenital variant is uncertain; the acquired may be caused by localized external pressure. Morphologically, cartilage rings are shorter and softer than normal, causing collapse, especially during

We present an unusual case of a 71-year-old man with unilateral wheezing brought on by change in position. Isolated bronchomalacia in the absence of tracheal involvement occurs more commonly in children and in adults with emphysema, chronic bronchitis, extrinsic compression by tumors, compression by abnormal blood vessels or vascular rings, relapsing polychondritis, endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation, enlarged left atrium, trauma, and lung transplantation. Our patient had predominant unilateral bronchomalacia. In this report, we present the clinical features, review the literat

Interventional cardiology provides a valuable nonoperative approach for the modern management of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in patients with non-complex congenital heart disease. We describe a patient with a right-sided aortic arch who developed severe bronchomalacia after PDA device closure that necessitated extensive surgical repair. Consequently, we advise that in infants with a right-sided aortic arch and PDA inserting into the right pulmonary artery, device closure is challenging due to the potential risk of bronchial compression and subsequent development of bronchomalacia. Considera

OBJECTIVE: To determine factors contributing to adverse postsurgical outcomes in children with congenital tracheal stenosis (CTS) treated with slide tracheoplasty (STP).
METHODS: We employed regression models to evaluate the impact of preoperative or intraoperative features on postoperative airway complications, mechanical ventilation time, hospitalization, and survival among STP-treated patients with CTS.
RESULTS: Outcomes from 271 patients with CTS undergoing STP were analyzed. Multivariate analysis showed that unilateral lung hypoplasia (odds ratio [OR], 4.859; 95% confidence interval [CI

We describe a patient with tuberculous bronchial stenosis who was subjected to bronchoplasty. The patient was a 33-year-old man who had stenosis of the left main bronchus. Because the lesion was associated with bronchomalacia, previous balloon dilatation therapy had failed. At thoracotomy, the left upper lobe was found not to be saved for the tuberculous lesion. Although there were many inflamed nodules in the left lower lobe due to repeated episodes of pneumonia, we decided to save it using bronchoplasty expecting its respiratory functional recovery. He ran uneventful course postoperatively a

Chromosome 22q11.2 deletion causes DiGeorge syndrome, velocardiofacial syndrome, conotruncal anomaly face syndrome with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), and sporadic or familial TOF. To determine the prevalence and clinical importance of the 22q11.2 deletion in TOF, a series of 212 Japanese TOF patients was studied. The type of pulmonary blood supply, which may lead to various clinical outcomes, and other additional anomalies were evaluated clinically. The 22q11.2 deletion was diagnosed by fluorescence in situ hybridization with N25 and TUPLE1 probes. Of the 212 patients examined, 28 (13%) had a 22q

A woman in her late 80s with severe bronchomalacia was referred to a tertiary orofacial pain clinic for unexplained right unilateral glossodynia of progressive and continuous evolution for the past 8 months, spreading to the ipsilateral labiomental region, associated with ipsilateral hypoacusia. Local and general clinical examinations were unremarkable and routine blood work could not reveal any underlying systemic disease explaining the glossodynia and burning/pricking labiomental pain. Suspecting a painful trigeminal neuropathy secondary to a space-occupying lesion, a cerebral MRI was prescr

OBJECTIVES: To assess the diagnostic utility of low-dose 4D dynamic airways CT in children with stridor as a non-invasive modality compared to fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB).
METHODS: Twenty-four (24) children (age: 13 d - 1.5 y, boys: 18) with stridor who underwent 4D dynamic airways CT and FOB were enrolled in this prospective study. Low-dose 4D dynamic airways CT was performed with 70 kVp and 15 mAs. Stridor during CT acquisition was noted. Image analysis was done using volume-rendered reconstruction and axial images, and the degree of collapse was noted. The 4D CT and FOB findings were com

Successful correction of bronchial compression and severe bronchomalacia complicating repair of interrupted aortic arch was achieved using transverse aortic arch extension with a pulmonary artery autograft and left bronchial sleeve resection. This procedure increased space within the aortic arch and eliminated bronchial narrowing with excellent results.

Tracheobronchial stenosis secondary to endobronchial tuberculosis (TSTB) is a rare but debilitating complication of endobronchial tuberculosis (EBTB). Topical mitomycin-C (TMC) has been successfully utilized to restore airway patency and to prevent recurrence of TSTB, although little is known about its exact efficacy. Here, we report the biggest case series to date involving seven patients who received TMC as part of multimodality endoscopic treatment for TSTB with varying levels of success. All patients presented with dyspnoea during or after treatment completion for pulmonary tuberculosis (P

Williams-Campbell syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by a deficiency of cartilage in subsegmental bronchi leading to distal airway collapse and bronchiectasis. We report the first case of lung transplantation in a patient with end-stage lung disease secondary to Williams-Campbell syndrome. Although the patient did not have proximal airway collapse prior to transplantation, his posttransplant course was complicated by the development of bronchomalacia of the right and left mainstem bronchi. The patient experienced recurrent pulmonary infections and died of bacterial pneumonia 1 year afte
