Brown-Sequard syndrome produced by cervical disc herniation with complete neurologic recovery: report of three cases and review of the literature.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: To report three cases of Brown-Sequard syndrome (BSS) associated with cervical disc herniation. METHOD: We describe clinical and radiographic review of three patients who presented with BSS caused by cervical disc herniation. Three patients presented with ipsilateral motor weakness and diminished sensation to pain and temperature on the contralateral side. Magnetic resonance images of the cervical spine in all cases, showed a large paramedian disc herniation at C5-C6, with ipsilateral severe spinal cord compression. Microsurgical removal of the herniated

An unusual case of Brown-Sequard syndrome associated with Horner's syndrome after a penetrating injury with a khuru (Bhutanese dart) to the neck: A case report.

The occurrence of Brown-Sequard syndrome with Horner's syndrome in a child with spinal trauma is a very rare and unusual entity. Brown-Sequard syndrome results from hemisection injury of the spinal cord, mostly in the cervical cord region. The Horner's syndrome presents when the injury is in the cervical region involving the sympathetic pathway. We present you with the case of a 12-year-old boy who was referred from a local hospital with weakness on the left half of his body after sustaining a penetrating injury to his neck by a khuru (Bhutanese dart). Clinical examination was consistent with

Spinal cord ischemia revealed by a Brown-Sequard syndrome and caused by a calcified thoracic disc extrusion with spontaneous regression: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic disc herniation is relatively uncommon, accounting for less than 1% of all spinal herniations. Although most often asymptomatic, they may represent a rare cause of spinal cord ischemia. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a healthy 43-year-old North African male who presented with a Brown-Sequard syndrome revealing a spinal cord ischemia caused by a thoracic disc extrusion. The initial MRI revealed a calcified disc extrusion at the level of T5-T6 without significant spinal cord compression or signal abnormality. A pattern consistent with a medullary ischemia only appeared

Cervical intradural disc herniation after spinal manipulation therapy in a patient with ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament: a case report and review of the literature.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report and review of the literature. OBJECTIVE: To report a patient presenting with Brown-Sequard syndrome due to cervical intradural disc herniation after spinal manipulation therapy. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spinal manipulation therapy (SMT) is often used by people with neck pain or discomfort as an alternative therapy due to its claimed less invasiveness and comparable efficacy. However, excessive manipulations are reported to cause rare but serious complications such as tetraplegia, vertebral artery dissection, epidural hematoma, and phrenic nerve injury. METHODS:

Intramedullary parasite eggs, latent for three decades, mimicking acute transverse myelitis.

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary parasitic infection is extremely uncommon, and clinical presentation of Brown-Sequard syndrome is even rarer. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors report a case involving a 57-year-old woman with Brown-Sequard syndrome, in whom magnetic resonance imaging and clinical and epidemiological features were similar to those of acute transverse myelitis. Myelotomy suggested inflammation caused by latent parasite eggs in the spinal cord. Antiparasitic and steroid therapies were administered postoperatively. To the author's knowledge, this is the first report to describe a surgical

Conservative Management of Traumatic Brown-Séquard Syndrome: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Traumatic spinal cord injuries are quite common; however, a rare form of incomplete spinal cord injury is Brown-Sequard syndrome. Brown-Sequard syndrome is defined by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes as "a rare neurological condition characterized by a lesion in the spinal cord which results in weakness or paralysis (hemiparaplegia) on one side of the body and a loss of sensation (hemianesthesia) on the opposite side." CASE REPORT A 33-year-old man was brought to the Emergency Department by Saudi Red Crescent with multiple stab wounds on the left upper th

Surgical Management of Idiopathic Thoracic Spinal Cord Herniation.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic spinal cord herniation is a rare condition that involves spinal cord herniation through a defect in the ventral dura. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of a 61-year-old woman who initially presented in 2016 with an approximately 1-year history of burning right lower extremity pain and gait instability. Her neurologic examination was consistent with thoracic Brown-Sequard syndrome, and spinal magnetic resonance imaging showed a focal defect in the ventral dura at the superior aspect of T4 with the left aspect of the cord herniating into the defect. In 2018, she underwe

Syrinx associated with intramedullary metastasis.

Two cases are reported of syrinx associated with an intramedullary metastasis. The first presented with hyperaesthesia in the right arm and bilateral pyramidal leg weakness, the second with a partial right sided Brown Sequard syndrome with a sensory level at D6. A possible pathological mechanism for the development of such syrinxes is discussed.

A Clinical Perspective and Definition of Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can be complete or incomplete. The level of injury in SCI is defined as the most caudal segment with motor function rated at greater than or equal to 3/5, with pain and temperature preserved. The standard neurological classification of SCI provided by the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) assigns grades from ASIA A (complete SCI) through ASIA E (normal sensory/motor), with B, C, and D representing varying degrees of injury between these extremes. The most common causes of SCI include trauma (motor vehicle accidents, sports, violence, falls), degenerative spinal

Cervical spondylosis with thoracic level Brown-Séquard syndrome.

Brown-Sequard Syndrome (BSS) caused by cervical spondylosis (CS) is rare. About 70% of patients with CS presenting with BSS show lesion-dermatome discrepancy, which may be due to spinal cord lamination. From the clinical point of view, this discrepancy should be carefully evaluated and these patients should be treated as an emergency.

Temporal course of motor recovery after Brown-Sequard spinal cord injuries.

Recovery of voluntary motor function after incomplete spinal cord injuries is attributed to a variety of physiological mechanisms, such as resolution of conduction block in injured axons, and neuroplasticity mechanisms in spared axons. To better understand these recovery mechanisms, we have examined motor recovery in one type of incomplete cord injury, the Brown-Sequard Syndrome. This syndrome is observed in patients with unilateral injury of the spinal cord and is manifested as asymmetric weakness and pain/temperature sensory loss contralateral to the weakest extremity. We have followed the c

Brown-Séquard, a restless mind.

Brown-Séquard, a remarkable medical personality of the 19 th century, was born in a small island of the Indian Ocean. He travelled over the world exerting his skills: a successful physician, and an innovative researcher, with a very ample range of interests. His favored subject was the nervous system. The spinal cord was studied extensively, with novel and important discoveries on the sensory pathways. He identified cases with spinal cord hemisection, and described the clinical presentation corresponding to a syndrome which bears his name (Brown-Séquard syndrome), for which he is best known am

Idiopathic Spinal Cord Herniation: A Case Report.

Idiopathic spinal cord herniation (ISCH) is a rare cause of progressive spinal myelopathy, which frequently presents as Brown-Sequard syndrome. A 50 year old woman consulted for difficulty in walking. On examination, the patient reported sensory deficit of temperature on the left side, associated with diminished anal sensitivity. Nine months before consultation, a walking disorder began disturbing the activities of everyday life. A single case report with surgical treatment outcome. Idiopathic spinal cord herniation is a potentially treatable condition, which should be diagnosed early and trea
