In endemic regions of brucellosis, childhood brucellosis includes up to one-third of all cases of human brucellosis. The main source of infection in children is consumption of unpasteurized dairy products and traditional local foods containing dairy products. The older boys are more involved in animal care. Boys are more commonly infected than girls. Common symptoms and signs include fever, arthralgia, sweating, peripheral arthritis and splenomegaly. Peripheral arthritis especially monoarthritis is more common and the most commonly affected joints are hip and knee. All organs may involve durin

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by a Gram-negative bacillus of the Brucella genus with multisystem involvement, primarily affecting the reticuloendothelial system, joints, heart and kidneys. Although the disease can be spread by inhalation, pulmonary involvement is rare.
OBJECTIVE: To report a case of brucellosis with pulmonary involvement. CASE PRESENTAION: A previously healthy 36-year-old woman was admitted with complaints of fever, weakness, night sweats, dry cough and bilateral chest pain. She hed been diagnosed with pneumonia 20 days previously and was started on a c

Bovine brucellosis is one of the most important zoonotic diseases worldwide, and is of particular significance in developing countries. The disease, which results in serious economic losses due to late term abortion, stillborn and weakly calves, is caused by Gram negative coccobacilli bacteria of the genus Brucella. Lesions consist of necrotic placentitis and interstitial mastitis in pregnant cows, and fibrinous pleuritis with interstitial pneumonia in aborted fetuses and newborn calves. This article considers the pathogenesis of Brucella abortus and reviews the ability of the pathogen to inva

Brucellosis is a zoonosis of worldwide distribution, relatively frequent in Mediterranean countries and in the Middle East. It is a systemic infection, caused by facultative intra-cellular bacteria of the genus Brucella, that can involve many organs and tissues. The spine is the most common site of musculoskeletal involvement, followed by the sacroiliac joints. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical, biological and imaging features of spinal brucellosis.

Brucellosis is a rare disease in children. Lung involvement is an uncommon presentation of brucellosis. The authors are presenting a child with brucellosis, who presented with predominant pulmonary involvement. It was an eight-year-old child who was referred to us a case of non-resolving pneumonia. Brucella agglutination test was suggestive of brucellosis. He responded to the combination of doxycycline and rifampicin.

BACKGROUND: Epididymoorchitis is the most frequent genitourinary complication of brucellosis.
METHODS: This prospective study was conducted between February 2001 and January 2004, prospectively. Male patients diagnosed with brucellosis were included in this study and evaluated for testicular involvement.
RESULTS: Epididymoorchitis was detected in 17 out of 134 (12.7%) male patients with brucellosis. Mean age of the patients was 36.9+/-7.1 years. Twelve patients (70.6%) had acute, four patients (23.5%) had subacute, and one patient (5.9%) had chronic brucellosis. The most common symptoms were

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease of worldwide distribution that mainly affects persons working with domestic animals and animal products. Despite being controlled in many developed countries, the disease remains endemic in many parts of the world, including Latin America, the Middle East, Spain, parts of Africa, and western Asia. The disease is mainly transmitted to humans through the ingestion of raw milk or non-pasteurized cheese contaminated with one of the four Brucella species pathogenic to humans. The clinical presentation can vary from asymptomatic infection with seroconversion to a fu

We reviewed the literature on camel brucellosis. The seroprevalence of brucellosis in camels appears to follow two distinct patterns: a low (2-5%) prevalence in nomadic or extensively kept camels and a high (8-15%) prevalence in camels kept intensively or semi-intensively. The infection is caused by different biotypes of Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis. Many gaps exist in the literature on the epidemiology of camel brucellosis. There is no clear policy in any of the camel-keeping countries regarding the control of brucellosis in camels. We suggest whole-herd vaccination in low-prevale

Brucellosis is a disease of domestic animals and humans in Central America (CA). Bovine and swine brucellosis caused by Brucella abortus and Brucella suis, respectively, have been identified in all CA countries, while ovine and caprine brucellosis caused by Brucella melitensis has been detected in Guatemala. The prevalence of bovine brucellosis is estimated between 4 and 8%, with higher prevalence in dairy herds, with losses calculated at 25 million US dollars per year. National Control Programs based in calf vaccination and removal of the reactors have had little impact in the control of bruc

Brucellosis is an infection caused by gram negative cocobacilli (Brucellae). Presentation is usually non-specific and diagnosis depends on high index of suspicion. Nervous system involvement in children is rare as only 47 cases were reported until 1998. We are reporting two patients with neurobrucellosis. The first case was an 8-year-old boy who presented with papillodeoma, and neck stiffness of one month duration. Cerebrospinal fluid pressure was 360mm/water, protein 0.63gm/dl, and cerebrospinal fluid sugar/serum sugar 0.2/4.7mmol. Brucella titer was high in serum and cerebrospinal fluid. The

Forty years after active drug therapy was defined, the treatment of brucellosis still raises the problem of selecting the correct antibiotic and the duration of treatment. Indeed, requirements may be complex since one must select antibiotics which are active in vitro and which diffuse readily into the tissues and into the cells without developing bacterial resistance. Prescriptions must also be long enough, not only to achieve cure, but also to eliminate the Brucella strain. Antibiotics must be found which meet this last criteria yet do not lead to toxic effects or impair the patient's own imm

A young Mexican woman had headache and left arm weakness develop shortly after immigrating to the United States. A solitary cerebral cysticercus was found at surgery, but, instead of the expected finding of clear fluid, the cyst contained pus from which Brucella melitensis was cultured. Although the patient had no signs or symptoms suggestive of brucellosis, agglutination studies revealed IgM and IgG antibodies consistent with active brucellosis. Clinicians should be alert to the possibility of multiple infections in immigrants from countries where parasites and bacteria that are uncommon in t

33 children (22 girls) with brucellosis seen between 1972-1988 were studied retrospectively. All but 1 were Bedouins. The mean age at diagnosis was 9.8 years (range: 17 months-17 years). Duration of illness prior to diagnosis was less than 1 week in 13 (39%), 1-4 weeks in 8 (24%) and 1-3 months in 10 (30%). In 2 cases the symptoms lasted 6 and 8 months, respectively, before diagnosis. Presenting symptoms included fever (85%), articular involvement (65%), hepatomegaly (45%) and splenomegaly (33%). Less common manifestations were anorexia (30%) and weight loss (15%) cases. Meningoencephalitis de

Two types of eruptions developed in a patient who had a fever of unknown origin: (1) tiny papules on the trunk and proximal extremities and (2) erythema nodosum-like deep dermal nodules on the legs. Brucella agglutinin test results were persistently negative, but B melitensis grew from the blood culture. Brucellosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a fever of unknown origin associated with a papular eruption with certain histologic features and/or erythema nodosum-like lesions. The histologic examination of cutaneous lesions may facilitate the diagnosis.
