Although well studied since the 50's, bruxism remains a largely unknown pathology. Its origin is complex, mixing psychological as well as neurological, odontological and hypnic aspects. However, the few analyzes performed on this topic have allowed to set convincing etiopathological hypotheses, including central dysregulation of the dopaminergic system as well as of the neuro-masticatory system. To avoid harmful consequences as headaches, temporomandibular disorders and premature dental scuffs / fractures, it is mandatory to diagnose bruxism as early as possible. For this purpose, and in addit

In this second part of a diptych on bruxism, the focus is on the associations of this masticatory muscle activity with other sleep-related conditions. Its association with the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) has been a particular object of study. Bruxism seems to play a protective role in OSAS, although the evidence for this is not yet conclusive. Apart from this possible positive consequence, bruxism also has several negative consequences, for which evidence is available to a greater or lesser extent. For example, bruxism has been associated with temporomandibular pain and dysfunctio

AIMS: Bruxism pathophysiology remains unclear, and its occurrence has been poorly investigated in movement disorders. The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of bruxism in patients with craniocervical dystonia vs. normal controls and to determine its associated clinical features.
METHOD: This is a prospective-control study. A total of 114 dystonic subjects (45 facial dystonia, 69 cervical dystonia) and 182 controls were included. Bruxism was diagnosed using a hetero-questionnaire and a clinical examination performed by trained dentists. Occurrence of bruxism was compared between th

OBJECTIVE: Since the pathophysiology of bruxism is not clearly understood, there exists no possible treatment. The aim of this study is to investigate the cerebral activation differences between healthy subjects and patients with bruxism on behalf of possible aetiological factors.
METHODS: 12 healthy subjects and 12 patients with bruxism, a total of 24 right-handed female subjects (aged 20-27 years) were examined using functional MRI during tooth-clenching and resting tasks. Imaging was performed with 3.0-T MRI scanner with a 32-channel head coil. Differences in regional brain activity betwee

Bruxism is characterized by non-functional contact of mandibular and maxillary teeth resulting in clenching or grating of teeth. Theories on factors causing bruxism are a matter of controversy in current literature. The dental profession has predominantly viewed peripheral local morphological disorders, such as malocclusion, as the cause of clenching and gnashing. This etiological model is based on the theory that occlusal maladjustment results in reduced masticatory muscle tone. In the absence of occlusal equilibration, motor neuron activity of masticatory muscles is triggered by periodontal

AIM: To determine the relationship between bruxism and cardiovascular diseases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 120 patients who referred to the Dentistry Faculty with the complaint of bruxism were selected. All patients gave informed consent for participation in the study. All of the patients were examined and bruxism was classified. And also these were examined by B-mode ultrasound to measure the Intima Media Thickness (IMT) at the far wall of the common carotid artery. A wide range of vascular risk factors including age, gender, body mass index, and previous history were surveyed. Spearman correlat

Bruxism has a multifactorial etiology. The consequences of bruxism, abrasion of teeth and a possible craniomandibular disorder, present themselves periferal. So, treatment can have divers points of action. Counseling seems to be useful in all cases. Treatment with a hard acrylic occlusal appliance (oral splint) is especially useful in those situations where the patient has a lot of abrasion or suffers from a craniomandibular disorder with pain. Pharmacological treatment will have a more central effect. Some drugs are effective on bruxism. However, the real pharmacological mechanisms have not y

To characterize the relationship between bruxism and dystonia, 79 patients (28 men and 51 women) with cranial-cervical dystonia were studied. Sixty-two patients (78.5%), 22 men and 40 women, had bruxism. The mean age at onset of dystonia in patients with bruxism was 52.4 +/- 12.6 years (range 14-80), similar to patients with cranial-cervical dystonia without bruxism. Involuntary oromandibular movements (46 patients) and blepharospasm (34 patients) were the most common initial symptoms among patients with dystonia. About one-fourth of bruxism patients had associated dental problems including TM

Bruxism is one of the most prevalent, complex, and destructive dental functional disorders. It is difficult to identify, especially in its early stages, because most patients are unaware of the habit. Although many factors contribute to the etiology of the disorder, there is little valid and reliable clinical research to assure a correct diagnosis. The effects of bruxism are multiple and diverse and include temporomandibular joint pain and dysfunction, head and neck pain, tooth wear, mobility, erosion, abrasion, loss of and damage to supporting structures, muscle pain and spasm, disturbance of

It has been proposed that suppression of stress-related emotional responses leads to the simultaneous activation of both sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and that the expression of these emotional states has a protective effect against ulcerogenesis. In the present study, we investigated whether stress-induced bruxism activity (SBA) has a physiological effect of on the stress-induced changes of the stomach, thymus, and spleen as well as blood leukocytes, cortisol, and adrenaline. This study demonstrated that SBA attenuated the stress-induced ulcer

BACKGROUND: Nocturnal bruxism (tooth clenching and/or grinding during sleep) affects a significant proportion of the population. Its etiology remains uncertain, and no entirely satisfactory treatment is available.
METHOD: This is an observational report of four depressed individuals selected from one psychiatrist's practice within an urban hospital's psychopharmacology clinic. Psychiatric diagnoses were made according to DSM-III-R criteria. Nocturnal bruxism was determined on the basis of dental examination and/or self-reported nocturnal tooth clenching and/or grinding.
RESULTS: Four patient

There is an association between bruxism and ADHD. No published data on psychiatric comorbidities in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children with bruxism were found. There is no satisfying treatment method for children with bruxism. If we understand its comorbidities well, a better treatment method could come out. This study was conducted to compare the frequency of comorbid psychiatric disorders in the parents and their ADHD children with and without teeth grinding. It was hypothesized that there is no association between bruxism and prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorder
