Effects of nitrite exposure on metamorphosis and skeletal development of Bufo gargarizans.

Nitrite, as a part of nitrogen cycle, is one of the most common toxic compounds in aquatic ecosystems. Since skeletal development is an essential process during amphibian metamorphosis, exposure of larval amphibians to nitrite might disrupt skeletal development. To evaluate whether nitrite affects skeletal development of amphibian larvae, Bufo gargarizans larvae at Gs26 were exposed to 10, 100, 500 and 1000 μg/L nitrite-nitrogen (NO2-N) in the present study. The metamorphosis rate, body weight, body length, forelimb length and hindlimb length of B. gargarizans exposed to NO2-N were decreased.

Strigea robusta (Digenea: Strigeidae) infection effects on the gonadal structure and limb malformation in toad early development.

The anomaly P is a mass morphological anomaly reported in some water frog populations across Europe. It was found that polydactyly is only a mild attenuated form of heavy cases of the anomaly P syndrome, which have strong deformations of the hindlimbs and, partly, forelimbs. It was shown that the anomaly P is caused by the trematode Strigea robusta and this syndrome can be considered as a special case of strigeosis in amphibians. The anomaly P for a long time considered to be specific for water frogs of the genus Pelophylax. Herein, we describe polydactyly and heavy forms of the anomaly P synd

Exposure to artificial light at night during the larval stage has delayed effects on juvenile corticosterone concentration in American toads, Anaxyrus americanus.

Artificial Light At Night (ALAN) is an environmental stressor that can disrupt individual physiology and ecological interactions. Hormones such as corticosterone are often responsible for mediating an organism's response to environmental stressors. We investigated whether ALAN was associated with a corticosterone response and whether it exacerbated the effects of another common stressor, predation. We tested for consumptive, non-consumptive, and physiological effects of ALAN and predator presence (dragonfly larvae) on a widespread amphibian, the American toad (Anaxyrus americanus). We found pr

Myiasis by Lucilia silvarum (Calliphoridae) in amphibian species in boreal Alberta, Canada.

We report myiasis by Lucilia silvarum with an overall prevalence of 0.9% in amphibian populations in boreal Alberta. In the period 1998--1999, we documented L. silvarum infestations in wild populations of wood frog (Rana sylvatica), boreal chorus frog (Pseudacris maculata), boreal toad (Bufo boreas boreas), and Canadian toad (B. hemiophrys). We believe this is the first record of this parasite from boreal and Canadian toads. Almost all previous records of L. silvarum parasitism in North America indicate that myiasis is fatal to an anuran host. Here, we provide the first record of adult individ

Comparative analysis of cutaneous evaporative water loss in frogs demonstrates correlation with ecological habits.

Most frog species show little resistance to evaporative water loss (EWL), but some arboreal species are known to have very high resistances. We measured EWL and cutaneous resistance to evaporation (Rc) in 25 species of frogs from northern Australia, including 17 species in the family Hylidae, six species in the Myobatrachidae, and one each in the Bufonidae and the Microhylidae. These species display a variety of ecological habits, including aquatic, terrestrial, and arboreal specialisations, with the complete range of habits displayed within just the one hylid genus, Litoria. The 25 species me

Some nematodes of the genus Rhabdias Stiles et Hassall, 1905 (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae) parasitising amphibians in French Guiana.

Based on material collected from Rhinella cf. margaritifera (Laurenti) and Rhi. marina (Linnaeus) (Anura: Bufonidae) during a parasite survey of the herpetofauna of French Guiana, updated descriptions of Rhabdias androgyna Kloss, 1971 and R. fuelleborni Travassos, 1926 are presented. In addition to metrical data, which may overlap in closely related species, emphasis is placed on qualitative characters. Rhabdias androgyna is distinguished by the unique presence of an outer and inner cephalic cuticular inflation, a shoulder-like broadening of the body at the anterior end, a wide and shallow buc

Accessibility and surface area drive desert toad presence at artificial water sites in the Great Basin and Mojave Deserts.

Artificial Water Sites (AWS) are human-made or modified water sources constructed or maintained for livestock, select wildlife game species, or other management purposes in arid environments. However, non-target species such as desert toads have been documented utilizing AWS. Because the reproductive ecology of desert toads relies on water, understanding factors explaining their presence at AWS can inform conservation practices. To address this lack of information, we examined how AWS design, spatial isolation, local terrain, and surrounding vegetation influenced toad presence in the Great Bas

Larval Digenean Parasitizing Amphibian Hosts from the Argentinian Chaco Region.

PURPOSE: The diversity of larval digenetic trematodes can provide information on one or more intermediate hosts prior to maturation into the definitive host; on host activity and distribution; and in some cases, on environmental perturbations. In this context, the goal of the present study was to analyse the trematode larvae found in adult amphibians collected from the Argentinian Chaco Region. Few studies have been reported on the systematics of larval digeneans in amphibians. METHODS: A total of 167 specimens of frogs (Leptodactylus macrosternum, Leptodactylus latinasus, Lepidobatrachus lae

Chlamydia pneumoniae Polioencephalomyelitis and Ganglionitis in Captive Houston Toads (Anaxyrus houstonensis).

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a ubiquitous pathogen causing disease in humans, mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Since 2012, C. pneumoniae infection has caused neurologic disease and mortality in a breeding colony of endangered Houston toads (Anaxyrus houstonensis) at the Houston Zoo. The purpose of this report is to present the histopathologic and ultrastructural characteristics of C. pneumoniae infection in Houston toads. Fourteen cases were evaluated by histopathology and 1 case was evaluated by electron microscopy. The major histopathologic finding was necrotizing and histiocytic polioen

A new species of Duttaphrynus (Anura:Bufonidae) from Northeast India.

A new species of montane toad Duttaphrynus is described from Nagaland state of Northeast India. The new species is diagnosable based on following combination of characters: absence of preorbital, postorbital and orbitotympanic ridges, elongated and broad parotid gland, first finger longer than second and presence of a mid-dorsal line. The tympanum is hidden under a skin fold (in male) or absent (in female). The species is compared with its congers from India and Indo-China. We propose to consider Duttaphrynus wokhaensis as junior synonym of Duttaphrynus melanostictus.

Uncovering the antimalarial potential of toad venoms through a bioassay-guided fractionation process.

Malaria remains to date one of the most devastating parasitic diseases worldwide. The fight against this disease is rendered more difficult by the emergence and spread of drug-resistant strains. The need for new therapeutic candidates is now greater than ever. In this study, we investigated the antiplasmodial potential of toad venoms. The wide array of bioactive compounds present in Bufonidae venoms has allowed researchers to consider many potential therapeutic applications, especially for cancers and infectious diseases. We focused on small molecules, namely bufadienolides, found in the venom

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wild amphibians: a call for more research.

Amphibians serve a central role in food webs and provide a link between aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Because of their dependence on water, amphibians are susceptible to legacy and emerging contaminants. We investigated mercury (Hg) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concentrations in wild populations of two amphibian species-the green frog (Lithobates clamitans) and the American toad (Anaxyrus americanus)-which exhibit different life histories. We evaluated whether proximity to PFAS point source (State Superfund site) affected PFAS exposures in amphibians and assessed length,

Asymmetric effects of avermectin insecticides on testicular morphology and function in Bufo gargarizans.

Avermectins (AVMs) are widely used insecticides that pose potential risks to non-target organisms through environmental exposure. However, their effects on amphibian reproductive systems remain poorly understood. This study conducted a 14-day exposure experiment on the Asiatic toads (Bufo gargarizans) through food (0.36 ng/d), water (0.02 μg/L), and combined treatments to investigate the asymmetric toxic effects of AVM on testicular morphology and function in this species. Results showed that AVM exposure significantly reduced sperm motility and induced histopathological damage in testes, with

Isolated dwarfism and sexual dimorphism in a mainland population of the greater short-horned lizard (Phrynosoma hernandesi) and the Great Plains toad (Anaxyrus cognatus).

Body size is an important biological concept as it impacts nearly all aspects of an organism. In mainland systems, body size tends to show clinal variation; however, drastic body size shifts are typically limited to insular systems in correspondence with abrupt changes in climate patterns and resource availability, often in coordination with reduced genetic diversity. We investigate a rare occurrence of dwarfism and its influence on sexual size dimorphism (SSD) among two mainland species inhabiting the San Luis Valley (Valley) using museum and live specimens. The Valley population of the great

Potential mechanism of delayed endochondral ossification and muscle atrophy induced by nitrate exposure in Bufo gargarizans tadpoles.

Nitrate pollution in aquatic ecosystems is a pervasive and growing problem globally, which can pose a substantial threat to amphibian survival. The shift in amphibian locomotive behaviors, specifically from tadpole tail swimming to adult limbs movement, are essential for facilitating physiological adaptations required for terrestrial survival. However, there is a question as to whether nitrate exposure affects amphibian motor systems. For this purpose, morphological, histological, transmission electron microscopic and transcriptomic analyses were performed on the hindlimb bones and muscles of

Estrogen contamination increases vulnerability of amphibians to the deadly chytrid fungus.

Aquatic contaminants and infectious diseases are among the major drivers of global amphibian declines. However, the interaction of these factors is poorly explored and could better explain the amphibian crisis. We exposed males and females of the Brazilian Cururu Toad, Rhinella icterica, to an environmentally relevant concentration of the estrogen 17-alpha-ethinylestradiol (an emerging contaminant) and to the chytrid infection (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis), in their combined and isolated forms, and the ecotoxicity was determined by multiple biomarkers: cutaneous, hematological, cardiac, hep
