Echinococcosis in children and adolescents in Bulgaria: a comparative study.

Between 1971 and 1995, 5874 patients underwent surgery in Bulgaria because of cystic echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Of these 5874, 10.6% were children aged < 15 years and 5.25% adolescents aged 15-19 years, giving annual incidences of 1.25 and 2.03/100,000 inhabitants, respectively. Although the annual incidence of surgery for echinococcosis among adults (3.12/100,000) was higher than the combined value for children and adolescents (1.48/100,000), the data indicate that most human infections with E. granulosus occur during childhood and adolescence. In evaluating the epidemi

Genetic heterogeneity of polycystic kidney disease in Bulgaria.

Linkage analysis was performed on 22 Bulgarian families with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) ascertained through the hemodialysis centers of two medical schools. A total of 128 affected and 59 unaffected individuals, and 54 spouses have been investigated using eight polymorphic markers linked to PKD1 and nine markers to PKD2. The results demonstrate locus heterogeneity with 0.67 as the maximum likelihood value of alpha, i.e., the proportion of families linked to PKD1. In five families, the results suggest linkage to PKD2 and observed recombinants place the gene between loci D4S1544 and D4S1542

Seroepidemiology of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Bulgaria.

During the period of 1954-1986, 399 cases of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) were registered in Bulgaria with 63 (15.7%) deaths. Three hundred serum samples from 214 patients who had contracted the disease from 1957 to 1986 were investigated by indirect fluorescent antibody test (IF-AT). As antigen Vero-E6 cells infected with the Asian Hantaan virus were used, as well as lung sections from bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) infected with strains Udmurt and Kazan 6-Cg from the European part of the U.S.S.R. Specific antibodies were detected in 194 sera, i.e. in 90.6% of persons i

[Immunogenicity of an R. burneti strain isolated in Bulgaria].

The immunogenic properties of a local R. burneti bp strain, isolated from sheep, were studied in view of its eventual use for active immunoprophylaxis against ky-fever in animals. The investigation was performed in guinea-pigs with 2 series corpuscular antigens: first phase antigen produced from guinea pig spleens and second phase antigen produced from yolk sacs of hen embryos. Each preparation was tested in concentrations of 500, 250, 62 and 31 millions microbial cells per 1 cm3. It was established that the R. burneti bp strain possesses immunogenic complexes of I and II phase. The corpuscula

Projected cancer incidence rates in Bulgaria, 1968-2017.

BACKGROUND: Incidence predictions are applicable when planning preventive or screening health care programmes, diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation facilities. The aim of this study was to predict future (1993-2017) incidence rates of the most common sites of cancer in Bulgaria: breast, cervix and corpus uteri in females, and lung, prostate and stomach in males. METHOD: Observed numbers of incident cases in the period 1968-1992 and observed (predicted) population size were employed. Age-cohort and age-cohort-period log-linear models were fitted to the observed data, assuming no change in

Identification of ectoparasitic insects among domestic goats in Bulgaria.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Ectoparasitic entomoses cause serious economic losses to small-scale farmers. Parasites have both direct and indirect impacts on hosts. Domestic goats are a common target of infestation with ectoparasitic insects. This study aimed to identify the species of ectoparasitic insects in domestic goats in Bulgaria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was performed in 34 farms from 29 settlements in 16 regions of Bulgaria. A total of 4599 goats from eight breeds, naturally infested with ectoparasitic insects were included in the study. The goats were inspected with a magnifying glas

Varicella zoster virus infection in neurological patients in Bulgaria.

The clinical manifestations of neurological complications associated with varicella zoster virus (VZV) are non-specific and indistinguishable from those of other viral infections. Therefore, the definite diagnosis requires evidence of VZV infection in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of VZV DNA detection in CSF of patients with neurological diseases in order to obtain information concerning involvement of VZV infection in neuropathology in the country. This study is a retrospective survey of test results obtained from January 2015 to October 2019.

Clinical and epidemiological descriptions from trichinellosis outbreaks in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is one of European countries where trichinellosis continues to be regularly diagnosed and registered. The clinical and epidemiological features of 72 cases of trichinellosis associated with five outbreaks caused by Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella britovi between 2009 and 2011, are described. At hospital admission, patients were often initially treated with antibiotics, without any improvement. A range of signs and symptoms were recorded, including: myalgia, elevated temperature, arthralgia, difficulty with movement, facial oedema, conjunctival hyperaemia, ocular haemorrhages, dia

[Nosocomial infections in neonatological wards in Bulgaria (2000-2009)].

Newborns have a reduced immunological resistance. That fact together with the risk factors, associated with hospitalization, determine the high level of nosocomial infections'illnesses in neonatological wards. The NI incidence of every 100 treated newborns at these wards in Bulgaria is 1.99% for the 2000-2009 period. At the neonatological wards in Bulgaria the nosocomial sepsis has a frequency of 1 of 1000 released patients. The leading role is that of coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CNS) with 28.27%. The leading etiological cause of nosocomial pneumonia in neonatal age in Bulgaria for the

Immunological subtypes of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia in Bulgaria.

With regards to the geographical variation in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) distribution, we present data from the immunophenotyping of 171 newly diagnosed cases of childhood ALL in Bulgaria during a 4 year period (1990-1994). On the basis of 17 phenotypic markers the distribution of immunological subtypes was as follows: AUL 4%; Pro-B ALL 13%; common ALL 42%; Pre-B ALL 11%; B-ALL 1%; T-ALL 28% and unclassified 2%. Most of the cases were between 2 and 5 years of age. Common ALL was predominant (53%) in this age group. The male:female ratio was 1.7:1. The frequency of T-ALL (28%) was signi

DNA Barcoding Study of Representative Thymus Species in Bulgaria.

We present a study on the taxonomy of eleven Thymus species, belonging to two sections and occurring naturally in Bulgaria. Four DNA barcoding markers-matK, rbcL, trnH-psbA and ITS-were applied to discriminate the species and to reveal their phylogenetic relationships. The results showed that rbcL has the lowest discriminating power regarding the studied species, while the other markers yielded results fitting better to the existing taxonomic schemes based on morphological traits. However, even in the case of better performing markers, the results were not straightforward-morphologically disti

HIV-1 genetic diversity and demographic characteristics in Bulgaria.

HIV-1 strain diversity in Bulgaria is extensive and includes contributions from nearly all major subtypes and the Circulating Recombinant Forms (CRF): 01_AE, 02_AG, and 05_DF. Prior to this study, HIV-1 sequence information from Bulgaria has been based solely on the pro-RT gene, which represent less than 15% of the viral genome. To further characterize HIV-1 in Bulgaria, assess participant risk behaviors, and strengthen knowledge of circulating strains in the region, the study "Genetic Subtypes of HIV-1 in Bulgaria (RV240)" was conducted. This study employed the real time-PCR based Multi-regio

Serologic evidence of widespread Toscana virus infection in Bulgaria.

BACKGROUND: Toscana virus (TOSV) is an emerging sandfly-borne virus that is endemic in Mediterranean countries. METHODS: In order to detect TOSV circulation among the human population of Bulgaria, serum samples from 459 apparently healthy adult individuals, residing in19 out of 28 districts in the country, were tested for the presence of IgG antibodies to TOSV. RESULTS: An overall seroprevalence rate of 24.4% was observed, ranging from 4.4% to 53.5% in the districts. Rates were highest in persons over 60 years of age and residing in the southern districts. CONCLUSION: The results of the fir
