This study sought to identify features of peer victimization that aggravate negative outcomes in children. The features that were assessed include "power imbalance," a commonly used criterion in defining bullying, and 5 other characteristics: injury, weapon involvement, Internet involvement, sexual content, and bias content. Three outcomes were assessed: level of fear, missing school, and trauma symptoms. A nationally representative sample of 3,164 children and youth ages 6-17 (51.8% male; 68.4% white, 12.5% black, 13.5% Hispanic, 5.7% other race) was obtained through Random Digit Dial and sup

BACKGROUND: To assess whether urban schoolchildren with aggressive behavior are more likely than peers to have symptoms suggestive of sleep-disordered breathing.
METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of sleep and behavior in schoolchildren. Validated screening assessments for conduct problems (Connor's rating scale), bullying behavior, and sleep-disordered breathing (pediatric sleep questionnaire) were completed by parents. Teachers completed Connor's teacher rating scale.
RESULTS: Among 341 subjects (51% female), 110 (32%) were rated by a parent or teacher as having a conduct problem (T-score ⩾65

This paper is about bullying among nurses at work. It presents the psychoanalytically based theory that workplace bullies, impaired during infancy by primary caregivers who were less than loving, project their own hostile personalities onto others and then relate to others without empathy or understanding, in demeaning ways. When these hostile people are employed in a masculine workplace, they protest against the gendered imperatives imposed upon them, hysterically. Because of the masculinization of the workplace, hysterical bullying varies according to gender, with women bullying in a hostile

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis and estimate the economic costs attributable to child and adolescent bullying victimization in Australia.
METHOD: The costs of bullying victimization were measured from a societal perspective that accounted for costs associated with health care, education resources, and productivity losses. A prevalence-based approach was used to estimate the annual costs for Australians who experienced bullying victimization in childhood and adolescence. This study updated a previous systematic review summarizing the association between bullying vic

Individuals with elevated symptoms of depression exhibit alterations in white matter integrity, including lower fractional anisotropy (FA) evident on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Similarly, individuals with a history of early life stress (ELS) exhibit lower FA in the white matter independent of concurrent depression. Prior studies have not determined whether the neuroimaging signature of comorbid ELS and adult depression differs from the pattern of brain white matter changes associated with depression in the absence of self-reported ELS. The current study examined FA in multiple white matte

Alopecia areata (AA) is a clinically heterogeneous disease that is characterized by nonscarring hair loss, nail changes, and increased risk of other autoimmune disease. During clinical visits, children with AA often report bullying. We report survey results that highlight the prevalence of bullying and surrounding emotional impact of AA in pediatric patients. We found that bullying was common overall and additional psychological impact, including impairment of social and home life, was even more common. Children of all ages experienced bullying. Boys reported increased physical bullying. Inter

The author investigated 25 adolescent patients (9 males, 16 females) whose mental disorders seemed to be induced by their experiences of being bullied at school. The patients were treated by the author in the outpatient clinic or the inpatient ward of National Defense Medical College Hospital during 10 years, 1978 through 1988. These patients were classified into 4 groups from the viewpoint of their clinical symptoms and signs. The author called each group as follows; 1) paranoid-hallucinatory group, 2) withdrawal group, 3) escaping-into-fantasy group, and 4) somatoform group. The paranoid-hal

Gender-inequitable attitudes are consistently associated with bullying perpetration, yet whether supportive schools weaken the link between those attitudes and behavior, or only lower the overall level of perpetration, remains unclear. Data came from the older cohort of the Survey on Social and Emotional Skills 2023. The analytic sample comprised 47,962 mid-adolescents (49.3% girls, 49.5% boys; M age = 15.76 years, SD = 0.29) in 1,263 schools across 15 education systems, five of them national samples and ten cities or sub-national regions. This review investigates the relationship between autism, vulnerability to bullying, and the impact of bullying on mental health for this cohort. Neurotypical social mores can be exclusionary, creating social risks for autistic people, while differences in communication and social engagement can impact peer-to-peer interaction, making autistic people more vulnerable to bullying and social discrimination. The current systematic review investigates risk factors related to the bullying of autistic people, considering both societal and individual factors. Our PRIMA guided search reported 74 studie

Females exposed to child sexual abuse (CSA) are at an increased risk of experiencing further victimization in adolescence. Associations between CSA and several forms of cyber and in-person peer bullying victimization were assessed in a prospective, longitudinal study. Females exposed to substantiated CSA and a matched comparison group (N = 422) were followed over a two-year period. Bullying experiences were assessed in both survey and qualitative interviews. Qualitative data were coded and used to describe the types (e.g., cyber, physical, verbal), and foci (e.g., threats, physical appearance)

IMPORTANCE: Bullying is the most widespread form of peer aggression in schools. In an effort to address school bullying, 49 states have passed antibullying statutes. Despite the ubiquity of these policies, there has been limited empirical examination of their effectiveness in reducing students' risk of being bullied.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of antibullying legislation in reducing students' risk of being bullied and cyberbullied, using data from 25 states in the United States.
