Hypoxia and hypercapnia effects on cerebral oxygen saturation in avalanche burial: A pilot human experimental study.

BACKGROUND: A sufficient supply of oxygen is crucial to avoid hypoxic cardiac arrest and brain damage within 30 min in completely-buried avalanche victims. Snow density influences levels of hypoxia and hypercapnia. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of hypoxia and hypercapnia on cerebral oxygenation (ScO2) in humans breathing into an artificial air pocket. METHODS: Each subject breathed into a closed system (air-tight face mask - plastic tube - snow air-pocket of 4 L) up to 30 min. Each subject performed three tests in different snow densities. ScO2 was measured by a near-i

Chironomid larvae enhance phosphorus burial in lake sediments: Insights from long-term and short-term experiments.

Tube-dwelling macrozoobenthos can affect lake ecosystems in myriad ways, including changes in nutrient fluxes across the sediment-water interface. The pumping activity of chironomid larvae reinforces the transport of solutes between sediment and water. The transport of oxygen into the area surrounding the burrows generates oxidized compounds such as iron(oxy)hydroxides, which results in an additional phosphorus (P) sorption capacity similar to that of oxidized sediment surfaces. In the present study, the effect of the oxidized burrow walls of Chironomus plumosus on P binding capacity and P bin

Opisthorchiasis in infant remains from the medieval Zeleniy Yar burial ground of XII-XIII centuries AD.

We present a paleoparasitological analysis of the medieval Zeleniy Yar burial ground of the XII-XII centuries AD located in the northern part of Western Siberia. Parasite eggs, identified as eggs of Opisthorchis felineus, were found in the samples from the pelvic area of a one year old infant buried at the site. Presence of these eggs in the soil samples from the infant's abdomen suggests that he/she was infected with opisthorchiasis and imply consumption of undercooked fish. Ethnographic records collected among the population of the northern part of Western Siberia reveal numerous cases of fe

Quaternary Knot Technique: Suture Knot Burial without Scleral Flap or Incision for Trans-scleral Fixation.

Despite the introduction of novel sutureless posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) fixation techniques, some conditions still require suture-assisted scleral fixation. If the scleral fixation suture knot is left directly under the conjunctiva, it may become exposed, resulting in an increased risk of endophthalmitis. To avoid this problem, we offer a new alternative, simple, and safe way for burying the end of the suture using knots in this report.

Improving burial practices and cemetery management during an Ebola virus disease epidemic - Sierra Leone, 2014.

As of January 3, 2015, Ebola virus disease (Ebola) has killed more than 2,500 persons in Sierra Leone since the epidemic began there in May 2014. Ebola virus is transmitted principally by direct physical contact with an infected person or their body fluids during the later stages of illness or after death. Contact with the bodies and fluids of persons who have died of Ebola is especially common in West Africa, where family and community members often touch and wash the body of the deceased in preparation for funerals. These cultural practices have been a route of Ebola transmission. In Septemb

Signs of trauma in an adult parietal bone exhumed from a Portuguese prehistoric collective burial.

A fragment of parietal bone from an adult individual of unknown sex exhumed from the collective burial of Praia da Samarra (Sintra, Portugal), dated to the end of the Neolithic, presents signs of different types of trauma. These include thinning of the skull vault and incisions marks. Differential diagnoses for these alterations are discussed: for the first one, depressed skull factures is the most likely cause. For the incisions, trepanation (more probable) and trauma due to a sharp force are proposed. These hypotheses are also discussed in terms of other similar findings from coeval Portugue

Boiled or not boiled? - D-aspartic acid in bone proteins as proof of a burial "more teutonico"?

Around the 12th/thirteenth century, a burial method called "more teutonico" was used for the remains of high-ranking individuals who had died far from their homeland and had to be brought back for burial. Before transportation, the bodies or body parts were boiled (macerated) to remove all soft tissue. The question of whether a body was boiled postmortem, is of particular interest for historians (burial "more teutonico"?) and this question may also be relevant in a forensic context, even if only in rare cases. In 1989, Bada, Herrmann, Payan and Man ("Amino acid razemization in bone and the boi

Humerus varus deformity in Roman period burials from Kellis 2, Dakhleh, Egypt.

Humerus varus deformity (HVD) occurs unilaterally in a female (#85) skeleton and bilaterally in a male (#124) from Kellis 2, a Roman period cemetery (circa 300-450 AD) from Dakhleh, Egypt. The affected humeri were shortened, their glenohumeral joints deformed, and their upper diaphyses were angulated. The skeletons were otherwise normal. The severity of the changes suggests that the underlying growth disturbances occurred early in postnatal development. The differential diagnosis considers the mucopolysaccharidoses, thalassemia, infection, and birth trauma, with the latter being favored. Clini

Autopsy or anatomical dissection: evidence of a craniotomy in a 17th-eighteenth century burial site (Ravenna, Italy).

Surgical procedures undergone in life, autopsies and anatomical preparations can all leave clearly identifiable traces on human skeletal remains. Several studies on skeletons from archeological contexts have identified traces of these practices. However, the distinction between medical/forensic autopsy and anatomical dissections for scientific research can be challenging. We report the case of a middle-aged female skeleton from the cemetery of the church of San Biagio (Ravenna, Italy), dating back to the 17th-19th centuries, that shows signs of a complete craniotomy. In an attempt to clarify t

Effects of seed burial depth on restoration success of wild-sown and nursery-propagated Thalassia hemprichii seedlings.

Seed-based restoration offers a non-destructive approach to restoring threatened seagrass meadows. Here, we explore the use of Thalassia hemprichii seeds and seedlings for restoration by examining the impact of seed burial depths in the aquarium and in the field, and by assessing the benefits of a nursery grow-out period prior to transplantation. In the aquarium, seeds buried at 0 cm and 1 cm had the highest seedling emergence and survival (100% and 98.7%, respectively), which declined with increased burial depth (2.5 cm: 74%, 4 cm: 23.9%). In the field, seeds buried to 1 cm had the highest su

Development rule of ground fissure and mine ground pressure in shallow burial and thin bedrock mining area.

With the increase of coal seam mining intensity in the western mining area, which has the typical mining geological characteristics of shallow burial depth, thin bedrock and thick loose layer, the structure of overburden rock has also changed greatly. When there is only one key layer structure in the thick bedrock and it is close to the coal seam, the strata pressure and surface crack development law of the working face are different from those of previous research results. Based on the research background of 52,307 large mining height working face in Daliuta Coal Mine, this paper adopts simil

Osteosclerotic disease and bone cyst in a prehispanic burial from Las Cañadas del Teide (Tenerife, Canary Islands).

Skeletal remains of two prehispanic male adult individuals (antiquity ≈ 550 BP) recovered from a burial cave located in Montaña Blanca (Las Cañadas del Teide) at an altitude of 2450 m above sea level, in the highlands of Tenerife (Canary Islands) showed some unusual features. Femora and tibiae of both individuals showed increased bone density, with irregular thickening of the midshaft diaphyses. One individual showed a cystic lesion in the distal third of the left femoral diaphysis, surrounded by a subtle sclerotic reaction of the spongiosa and a thin cortex that was partially fractured. [Remineralization and burial of sedimentary organic carbon in filter-feeding bivalve aquaculture areas: Mechanisms and controversies.].

Filter-feeding bivalve aquaculture enhances the transport of particulate organic carbon (POC) to the seafloor through filtration, selective feeding, and biodeposition, thereby altering the sources, fluxes, and reactivity of sedimentary organic carbon (SOC). However, aquaculture-induced organic carbon inputs are characterized by "high input, high reactivity, and high uncertainty". After entering the sediment, a fraction is returned to the water column through microbial remineralization, resuspension, and lateral transport, whereas another fraction is stabilized through rapid burial, mineral pro

A critically prolonged avalanche burial with recorded cardiac electrical activity and complete recovery - a case report.

The probability of survival in avalanche accidents is time-dependent. Critically buried victims who undergo a long burial duration (over 60 min) face a possible mortality rate of over 80%. Understanding the physiological response during critical avalanche burial is crucial for improving rescue strategies and outcomes. We present the case of a 55-year-old male skier buried under an avalanche for 4 h and 51 min in the Italian Alps. Continuous heart rate monitoring revealed distinct phases of cardiac activity during burial. Despite severe hypothermia, the victim survived without extracorporeal re

26Al/10Be Burial Dating of the Middle Pleistocene Yiyuan Hominin Fossil Site, Shandong Province, Northern China.

The Yiyuan hominin fossil site is one of the few localities in China where a partial skullcap and several loose teeth of Homo erectus have been discovered. Yiyuan was previously assigned broadly to the Middle Pleistocene by biostratigraphical correlation and ESR/U-series dating. Here, we report the first application of a radio-isotopic dating method to the site. 26Al/10Be burial dating results derived from two sand samples from the fossiliferous deposits show that the hominin fossils can be confidently dated to 0.64 ± 0.08 Ma (million years ago). The reliability of this age is supported by the

Investigation of a Medieval Pilgrim Burial Excavated from the Leprosarium of St Mary Magdalen Winchester, UK.

We have examined the remains of a Pilgrim burial from St Mary Magdalen, Winchester. The individual was a young adult male, aged around 18-25 years at the time of death. Radiocarbon dating showed the remains dated to the late 11th-early 12th centuries, a time when pilgrimages were at their height in Europe. Several lines of evidence in connection with the burial suggested this was an individual of some means and prestige. Although buried within the leprosarium cemetery, the skeleton showed only minimal skeletal evidence for leprosy, which was confined to the bones of the feet and legs. Nonethel

Buried Alive: The Behavioural Response of the Mussels, Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis to Sudden Burial by Sediment.

Sedimentation in the sea occurs through natural processes, such as wave and tidal action, which can be exacerbated during storms and floods. Changes in terrestrial land use, marine aggregate extraction, dredging, drilling and mining are known to result in substantial sediment deposition. Research suggests that deposition will also occur due to the modern development of marine renewable energy. The response to individual burial under three depths of sediment, three sediment fractions and five burial durations was investigated in two mussel species, Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis in specia

Hysterical paralysis and premature burial: a medieval Persian case, fear and fascination in the West, and modern practice.

Premature burial (taphophobia) is an ancient fear, but it became especially common in 18th and 19th century Europe and may have a modern-day counterpart. Examination of a well-documented case from medieval Persia reveals the importance of funeral practices in the risk of actual premature burial and sheds light on the question of why taphophobia became so prevalent in Europe during the early industrial revolution period. The medieval Persian case was attributed to hysterical paralysis (conversion). We discuss the relationship between hysterical paralysis and premature burial more generally and

Cerebral blood flow and metabolism under conditions of simulated avalanche burial in humans: The triple H syndrome.

Avalanche burial exposes individuals to a combination of hypothermia, hypercapnia and hypoxia. We investigated the impact of mild hypothermia on cerebrovascular function during room-air breathing and progressive hypercapnic hypoxia. In 14 participants (6 females) the radial artery and internal jugular vein were catheterized to measure blood gases, intravascular pressure, biomarkers of neurovascular damage (tau, neurofilament light (Nf-L) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), whereas duplex ultrasound was used to quantify global cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral oxygen delivery (CDO2),
