Seasonal variation in detection of bacterial DNA in arthritic stifle joints of dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture using PCR amplification of the 16S rRNA gene.

An underappreciated cause and effect relationship between environmental bacteria and arthritis may exist. Previously, we found that stifle arthritis in dogs was associated with the presence of environmental bacteria within synovium. Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) is often associated with stifle arthritis in dogs. We now wished to determine whether seasonal variation in detection of bacterial material may exist in affected dogs, and to also conduct analyses of both synovium and synovial fluid. We also wished to analyze a larger clone library of the 16S rRNA gene to further understandi

Local oral and nasal microbiome diversity in age-related macular degeneration.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic degenerative disease of the retina. Recent reports have highlighted the potential role of mucosal surface microbes in the pathogenesis of AMD. In this case-control study, the composition of the nasal and oral microbiota in newly diagnosed neovascular age-related macular degeneration cases (6 male, 7 female) was compared to controls without retinal diseases (2 male, 3 female). PCR amplification of 16S rRNA genes was performed with universal primers amplifying the V4 variable region (515F-806R). Distinct microbial community characterization was

Inhella crocodyli sp. nov., isolated from a crocodile pond.

Strain CCP-18T, isolated from a freshwater pond in Taiwan, was characterized by using a polyphasic taxonomy approach. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain CCP-18T belongs to the genus Inhella and has the highest levels of sequence similarity with respect to Inhella inkyongensis IMCC1713T (98.9 %) and Inhella fonticola TNR-25T (98.0 %). Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile, rod-shaped and formed white-coloured colonies. Optimal growth occurred at 25 °C, pH 6 and in the absence of NaCl. The major fatty acids of strain CCP-18T were summed feature

Intermittent fasting protects MPTP-induced Parkinson's disease mouse model through regulating gut microbiota dysbiosis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by gut microbiota dysbiosis and excessive inflammatory responses. Intermittent fasting (IF) exerts neuroprotective effects on neurodegenerative diseases. However, the impact of IF on PD and its mechanisms still need to be elucidated. In the present study, we found that 13-week IF regimen (designed as alternate-day fasting) mitigated motor impairment, α-synuclein aggregation, and loss of dopaminergic neurons in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated mice. Meanwhile, IF attenuated intestinal dysfunctions,

Gut dysbiosis is associated with the reduced exercise capacity of elderly patients with hypertension.

Hypertension is a global health issue, and a reduced exercise capacity is unavoidable for older people. According to recent clinical studies, the intestinal microbiota play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of many human diseases. We investigated whether specific alterations in the gut microbiota contribute to the reduced exercise capacity of elderly patients with hypertension. This study enrolled 56 subjects, and all patients performed a cardiopulmonary exercise test and underwent fecal bacteria sequencing (16 s ribosomal RNA V4 region). According to peak oxygen uptake values, patients were

Exopolysaccharide producing rhizobacteria and their impact on growth and drought tolerance of wheat grown under rainfed conditions.

The demand for agricultural crops continues to escalate with an increasing population. To meet this demand, marginal land can be used as a sustainable source for increased plant productivity. However, moisture stress not only affects crop growth and productivity but also induces plants' susceptibility to various diseases. The positive role of plant growth hormone, salicylic acid (SA), on the defence systems of plants has been well documented. With this in mind, a combination of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and SA was used to evaluate its performance on wheat grown under rainfed

Microbial community structure and functional characteristics across the mucosal surfaces of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus).

The mucosal surfaces of aquatic animals serve as a functional barrier between the host and the aquatic environment, hosting diverse microbial communities that play pivotal roles in host health. In this study, amplicon libraries of the 16S rRNA gene were constructed to investigate the compositional differences between the microbial communities presented in four mucosal surfaces (gills, skin, gut, and ovary) of spawning female olive flounder. To elucidate the unique roles of commensal microbes in external and internal organs, we used PICRUSt2 and ALDEx2, respectively, to predict metabolic functi

Characterization of plant growth-promoting bacteria from Vicia faba root nodules grown on oasis soils and their potential to enhance soil fertility and crop growth attributes in arid regions.

Soil degradation and nutrient depletion are major constraints in arid regions, particularly in fragile oasis ecosystems. Harnessing beneficial plant-bacteria interactions offers a sustainable approach to improving soil fertility and crop productivity. This study aimed to isolate and characterize plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) from root nodules of V. faba L. var. minor Saber 02 grown on 12 oasis soils, and to evaluate their potential for enhancing plant growth and soil fertility. Sixty bacteria were isolated from V. faba root-nodules. 16S rDNA sequencing revealed seven bacterial or

'Concord' grapevine nutritional status and chlorosis rank associated with fungal and bacterial root zone microbiomes.

Leaf chlorosis in vineyards is associated with reduced crop yields and quality. While iron (Fe) is understood to play a crucial role in chlorosis, total plant and soil Fe are not always indicative of chlorosis in grapevines. Physiology of chlorosis in vineyards has been well-studied, but the soil microbial consequences of and contributions to chlorosis have received little attention. We used next-generation sequencing (NGS) to examine the bacterial and fungal communities associated with grapevines demonstrating varying degrees of visual chlorosis symptoms. Additionally, chemical analyses of so

Genomic analyses of globally distributed Rhizopus microsporus populations indicate clinical isolates derived from environmental diversity reservoirs.

Mucormycosis is a group of diseases that is increasing in frequency. A common opportunistic human fungal pathogen in this group is Rhizopus microsporus, which is a globally distributed species present in soil-associated environments. A subset of isolates in this species host endobacteria that are hypothesized to influence fungal pathogenicity in both clinical and environmental settings. We have limited understanding of how clinically and environmentally derived isolates are related or how physiological attributes, including thermotolerance and endosymbiosis, are correlated with population stru

Gut microbiota alteration in a mouse model of Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Anorexia Nervosa is a severe disease depending on both biological, psychological and environmental factors. The gut microbiota has recently been proposed as one of the biological factors potentially involved in the onset or maintenance of Anorexia Nervosa. To unravel the potential role of the gut microbiota in this disease, we characterized the dysbiosis occurring in a mouse model of Anorexia and correlated bacteria level changes with different physiological parameters such as body weight, food intake or levels of hypothalamic neuropeptides. METHODS: We used the Activity-Ba

The causal relationship between the human gut microbiota and pyogenic arthritis: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have indicated the role of the gut microbiota in the progression of osteoarticular diseases, however, the causal relationship between the gut microbiota and pyogenic arthritis remains unclear. There is also a lack of theoretical basis for the application of the gut microbiota in the treatment of pyogenic arthritis. METHODS: In our study, we utilized the largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) data from the MiBioGen Consortium involving 13,400 participants and extracted summary statistical data of the microbiota metabolic pathways of 7,738 participants of Europe

Microalgal-bacterial sludge enhances dimethyl phthalate (DMP) biodegradation beyond adsorption: Metabolic pathways, microbial responses, and adaptive mechanisms.

Phthalate acid esters (PAEs), as typical environmental endocrine disruptors, pose severe threats to ecosystems and human health due to their persistence in aquatic environments, while conventional wastewater treatment processes exhibit low removal efficiency and risk secondary pollution. This study constructed microalgal-bacterial sludge (MABS) to systematically investigate its removal efficiency and the degradation mechanisms of dimethyl phthalate (DMP). The results demonstrate that, compared to conventional activated sludge (AS), DMP MABS exhibited greater tolerance to DMP and higher DMP rem
