Acute electrical burns: a 10-year clinical experience.

We have reviewed 113 cases of electrical burns treated at the Cook County Hospital Burn Center during the past 10 years. There were 3265 acute burn admissions during this period. the incidence of electrical burns being 3.5 per cent. Low-voltage electrical burns occurred in 82 of the 113 patients (73 per cent). These were caused mostly by household electricity supplies, occurred in children, and were preventable. Arc burns of the perioral region were allowed to heal spontaneously. The surgical management of other arc burns and flash burns was similar to that for most deep burn wounds. The incid

Rehabilitation of an electrical burn patient through thermal biofeedback.

A 22-year-old male subject, with high-voltage electrical burns to one wrist, utilized differential relaxation and visual biofeedback to increase skin temperature in the damaged hand. Through 14 thermal biofeedback and passive relaxation sessions, the subject was able to produce temperature increases in his damaged hand of up to 21 degrees F, which considerably diminished the pain. Healing, feeling, and movement control seemed to progress with extreme rapidity, suggesting that axoplasmic transport was greatly enhanced.

Thoracic Duct Chylous Fistula Following Severe Electric Injury Combined with Sulfuric Acid Burns: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND As patients with thoracic duct injuries often suffer from severe local soft tissue defects, integrated surgical treatment is needed to achieve damage repair and wound closure. However, thoracic duct chylous fistula is rare in burn patients, although it typically involves severe soft tissue damage in the neck or chest. CASE REPORT A 32-year-old male patient fell after accidentally contacting an electric current (380 V) and knocked over a barrel of sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid continuously poured onto his left neck and chest, causing combined electrical and sulfuric acid burn inju

[Accidental skin burns by fire of an antiseptic agent ignition by the spark of electric cautery].

Surgical fire is a rare complication during the operative period. But, it is a severe complication when it occurs. There are antiseptic agents with strong inflammability used for skin preparation. We report accidental skin burns caused by the spark of electric cautery. The patient was a 29-year-old (50 kg, 158 cm, physical status ASA1) woman who underwent laparotomy for acute abdomen. Anesthesia was induced and tracheal intubation was performed without trouble. Anesthesia was maintained with oxygen, air, remifentanil and sevoflurane. The skin of the surgical site was sterilized with an alcohol

Early Application of Microsurgical Flaps in the Electric Burns of Extremities: A Two Institutional Case Series.

Some groups have avoided early microsurgical flaps in electrical burns under the pretext of injury to the microvasculature, which could increase vascular thrombosis. However, this option frequently results in amputation of the extremity. This study aims to evaluate the early application of microsurgical flaps for the treatment of electrical burns of extremities. A case series was retrospectively evaluated including patients with electrical trauma in extremities undergoing early microsurgical reconstruction. Data were obtained from medical charts, including age, trauma location, flap type and m

Reconstruction of electrical burns of the oral commissure with a ventral tongue flap.

Reconstruction of the oral commissure following electrical burn injury is a challenging problem. The commissure is a thin, delicate structure that is highly mobile and essential to normal facial appearance and expression. When there is full-thickness destruction of vermilion, mucosa, skin, and orbicularis muscle, the resulting contracture alters adjacent structures, displaces the commissure, and distorts facial animation. Utilizing a composite ventral tongue flap of mucosa and muscle in the reconstruction of the commissure permits effective release of scar contracture and replaces destroyed mu

Transient diabetes insipidus following electrical burns in two patients.

We report on two healthy white men who sustained high-voltage electrical burns and were transferred to our regional burn center for specialized care. Within 24 hours of admission, both patients developed clinical signs and laboratory evidence of diabetes insipidus. With appropriate treatment, no sequelae occurred and their endocrinopathy spontaneously resolved. Diabetes insipidus following traumatic events is not uncommon; however, it has never been reported following an electrical injury.
