Oral receptivity of Aedes aegypti from Cape Verde for yellow fever, dengue, and chikungunya viruses.

At the end of 2009, 21,313 cases of dengue-3 virus (DENV-3) were reported in the islands of Cape Verde, an archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean 570 km from the coast of western Africa. It was the first dengue outbreak ever reported in Cape Verde. Mosquitoes collected in July 2010 in the city of Praia, on the island of Santiago, were identified morphologically as Aedes aegypti formosus. Using experimental oral infections, we found that this vector showed a moderate ability to transmit the epidemic dengue-3 virus, but was highly susceptible to chikungunya and yellow fever viruses.

China's COVID-19 aid in Africa: trends and implications for future pandemic preparedness.

BACKGROUND: Chronic underfunding of pandemic preparedness remains a critical weakness in global health security. Without sustained, strategic investment, the world risks repeating the reactive approaches of past crises. This study examines the modes of COVID-19 aid delivered by the Chinese government across African countries and regions, offering a nuanced understanding of China's operational role in pandemic response. In doing so, it contributes to the global health assistance literature by providing a more comprehensive view of China's involvement in the prevention, treatment, and control of

Buffy coat smear or Knott's test: which to choose for canine microfilaria screening in field studies?

BACKGROUND: In recent years, an increasing number of cases of canine dirofilariasis have been reported worldwide. However, the rate of infection in dogs is largely unknown in many remote areas, and the importance of field studies for determination of the prevalence of canine dirofilariasis in such areas is well recognized. The detection of microfilariae by the modified Knott's test (MKT) is a recommended screening method for canine dirofilariasis. OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study were to compare the diagnostic sensitivity of the MKT with the buffy coat smear method (BCS), and to evaluat

The importance of social context in understanding and promoting low-income immigrant women's health.

Understanding the social context and realities of Cape Verdean women in the U.S. as well as other immigrant and ethnic/racial groups is important to promote their overall health and well-being more effectively. The aim of this study was to gain a contextual understanding from the perspectives of health promoters who work with marginalized women. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine Cape Verdean women health promoters about their perspectives and experiences of health promotion practice with immigrant women in their community. Using a Glaserian grounded theory approach

The Broader Economic Value of School Feeding Programs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Estimating the Multi-Sectoral Returns to Public Health, Human Capital, Social Protection, and the Local Economy.

Introduction: Globally, there are 370 million children receiving school meals every day. Coverage is least in low-income countries, where the need is greatest and where program costs are viewed as high in comparison with the benefits to public health alone. Here we explore the policy implications of including the returns of school feeding to other sectors in an economic analysis. Methods: We develop an economic evaluation methodology to estimate the costs and benefits of school feeding programs across four sectors: health and nutrition; education; social protection; and the local agricultural

Rethinking malaria elimination: a perspective on challenges and solutions in Angola.

BACKGROUND: Multiple challenges hinder malaria control in Angola, including climatic variability, ineffective vector control, population displacement, socioeconomic inequalities, and increasing resistance to anti-malarial drugs and insecticides. These barriers have been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, disrupting healthcare services and reversing prior gains. Despite a 36% reduction in malaria mortality since 2000, Angola remains off track to meet the Global Technical Strategy (GTS) targets for 2025, with no significant progress recorded in reducing malaria mortality between 2015

COVID-19 pandemic in Africa's island nations during the first 9 months: a descriptive study of variation in patterns of infection, severe disease, and response measures.

The geographic and economic characteristics unique to island nations create a different set of conditions for, and responses to, the spread of a pandemic compared with those of mainland countries. Here, we aimed to describe the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the potential conditions and responses affecting variation in the burden of infections and severe disease burden, across the six island nations of the WHO's Africa region: Cabo Verde, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, São Tomé e Príncipe and Seychelles. We analysed the publicly available COVID-19 data on confirmed cases

A socioecological measurement of homophobia for all countries and its public health impact.

BACKGROUND: Measuring homophobia at country level is important to guide public health policy as reductions in stigma are associated with improved health outcomes among gay men and other men who have sex with men. Methods: We developed a Homophobic Climate Index incorporating institutional and social components of homophobia. Institutional homophobia was based on the level of enforcement of laws that criminalise, protect or recognise same-sex relations. Social homophobia was based on the level of acceptance and justifiability of homosexuality. We estimated the Index for 158 countries and assess

Diagnosing Zika virus infection against a background of other flaviviruses: Studies in high resolution serological analysis.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus. Homologous proteins of different flaviviruses display high degrees of sequence identity, especially within subgroups. This leads to extensive immunological cross-reactivity and corresponding problems for developing a ZIKV-specific serological assay. In this study, peptide microarrays were employed to identify individual ZIKV antibody targets with promise in differential diagnosis. A total of 1643 overlapping oligopeptides were synthesized and printed onto glass slides. Together, they encompass the full amino acid sequences of ZIKV proteomes of

The prevalence and characteristics of unrecorded alcohol consumption: a secondary analysis of cross-sectional surveys in 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

OBJECTIVE: Empirical evidence on unrecorded alcohol (alcohol produced, distributed and sold outside government oversight) remains limited in sub-Saharan Africa, despite its contribution to total alcohol consumption in many low- and middle-income countries. We estimated the prevalence and main types of unrecorded alcohol consumption; investigated sociodemographic characteristics of its use; and examined differences in drinking patterns between consumers of recorded and unrecorded alcohol across 11 sub-Saharan African countries. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of nationally rep

Optimizing malaria diagnostic sensitivity as a prerequisite for targeted vector control and rational antimalarial deployment: A compartmental modeling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gains in malaria transmission reduction achieved through insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are reversing amid emerging artemisinin partial resistance. While sensitive diagnostics are key to monitoring resistant parasite-driven outbreaks, most malaria outbreak models treat diagnostic sensitivity as a fixed background parameter, obscuring its role both in clinical progression and disease burden. METHODS: We developed an eight-compartment deterministic model in which diagnostic sensitivity acts as a bifurcation parameter partitioning individuals infected with uncomplicated malaria into

Advancing progress on tobacco control in low-income and middle-income countries through economic analysis.

BACKGROUND: More than 80% of the world's 1.3 billion tobacco users live in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), where progress to address tobacco and its harms has been slow. The perception that tobacco control detracts from economic priorities has impeded progress. The Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) is leading the FCTC 2030 project, which includes technical assistance to LMICs to analyse the economic costs of tobacco use and the benefits of tobacco control. METHODS: The Secretariat of the WHO FCTC, United Nations Development Programme and WHO

High serological and molecular prevalence of Ehrlichia canis and other vector-borne pathogens in dogs from Boa Vista Island, Cape Verde.

Despite the high global impacts of canine vector-borne diseases (CVBD) due to their wide distribution and zoonotic potential, the current epidemiological situation of CVBD in many tropical and subtropical regions remains unknown. This study examines the seroprevalence and molecular prevalence of Ehrlichia canis and other pathogens causing CVBDs (Leishmania infantum, Dirofilaria immitis, Babesia spp., Anaplasma spp. and Hepatozoon canis) in dogs living on the island of Boa Vista (Cape Verde Republic). Blood samples and infesting ticks were taken from 150 dogs across the island (stray, shelter,

Global assessment of surface ultraviolet radiation and malignant skin melanoma incidence from 1990 to 2021.

Climate change are altering ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels reaching the Earth's surface. Enhanced UV radiation poses significant risks to human health, notably increasing the risk of skin cancer. Malignant skin melanoma (MM) is the most aggressive skin cancer, accounting for 75% of global skin cancer-related deaths. Over the last five decades, MM incidence has surged dramatically, with over 325,000 new cases reported worldwide in 2020, underscoring the urgent need to understand and address the health impacts of rising UV exposure. This study systematically quantified the risk of UV-induced

Cervical cytology and HPV distribution in Cape Verde: A snapshot of a country taken during its first HPV nation-wide vaccination campaign.

Cervical cancer ranks as the third most common female cancer in Cape Verde and is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in the country. While Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, which started in 2021, is anticipated to significantly reduce disease incidence, cervical screening remains crucial for non-vaccinated women. We retrospectively reviewed gynecologic cytology exams and HPV tests performed in Cape Verde between 2017 and April 2023 and processed at IMP Diagnostics. For this study, we considered 13035 women with cytology examinations performed and, 2013 of these, also

Drug resistance profile and clonality of Plasmodium falciparum parasites in Cape Verde: the 2017 malaria outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Cape Verde is an archipelago located off the West African coast and is in a pre-elimination phase of malaria control. Since 2010, fewer than 20 Plasmodium falciparum malaria cases have been reported annually, except in 2017, when an outbreak in Praia before the rainy season led to 423 autochthonous cases. It is important to understand the genetic diversity of circulating P. falciparum to inform on drug resistance, potential transmission networks and sources of infection, including parasite importation. METHODS: Enrolled subjects involved malaria patients admitted to Dr Agostinho N

[Status of World Malaria in 2021 (2022 World Malaria Report)].

Malaria is an acute febrile disease transmitted through the bite of Anopheles spp. infected with Plasmodium spp. protozoa. This disease occurs mostly in tropical regions. Five species of malaria can infect humans, Plasmodium falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale, P. vivax, and P. knowlesi, of which P. falciparum and P. vivax are known to be the most important parasites for human. P. falciparum is most prevalent in Africa, while P. vivax is most prevalent in Southeast and Western Pacific Asia. P. malariae and P. ovale occur in parts of Africa, while P. knowlesi occurs only in parts of Malaysia and

Trust your guts? The effect of gut section on diet composition and impact of Mus musculus on islands using metabarcoding.

DNA metabarcoding is widely used to characterize the diet of species, and it becomes very relevant for biodiversity conservation, allowing the understanding of trophic chains and the impact of invasive species. The need for cost-effective biodiversity monitoring methods fostered advances in this technique. One question that arises is which sample type provides a better diet representation. Therefore, with this study, we intended to evaluate if there were differences in diet estimates according to the section of the gastrointestinal tract analysed and which section(s) provided the best diet repr
