Eponyms for the Description and Classification of Calcaneus Fractures.

There are several eponyms used in the assessment and management of calcaneus fractures. However, the origin of these eponyms is no longer widely known. Named for orthopaedic surgeons who made substantial contributions to the management of calcaneus fractures as well as the field of orthopaedic surgery, understanding the context of how these descriptors were derived helps give context to their use in the present day. The purpose of this review is to provide a historical perspective and comprehensive collection of the most common eponyms related to calcaneus fractures.

Complications After Percutaneous Osteotomies of the Calcaneus.

BACKGROUND: Open hindfoot surgery is associated with a relatively high rate of complications, including neurovascular injuries and wound healing problems compared with percutaneous techniques. However, there is a scarcity of literature describing the outcomes of these percutaneous techniques given their relatively recent adoption. The present study aims to assess the rate of postoperative complications for 3 commonly performed percutaneous calcaneal osteotomies. METHODS: One hundred eighteen patients (unilateral feet) were treated with one of 3 common percutaneous calcaneal osteotomies. Sixty

Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma of the calcaneus.

Juvenile ossifying fibromas (JOFs) are a rare group of fibro-osseous lesions, typically of odontogenic origin. Juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) is one variant, that is, histopathologically distinguished by spherical ossicles resembling psammoma bodies. JPOF tumours are most commonly found in craniofacial skeletal structures and can be locally aggressive. Thus, early management by complete surgical excision is crucial for good outcomes, although recurrence is still possible. Secondary aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) formation has been reported with JOF lesions, but less commonly with t

An intraosseous lipoma of the calcaneus: a case report.

Intraosseous lipomas are one of the rarest bone tumors found in the body. The incidence has been reported to be <0.1% of all primary bone tumors. The differential diagnoses of an intraosseous lipoma in the calcaneus include plantar fasciitis, retrocalcaneal bursitis, gout, stress fracture, unicameral bone cyst, aneurysmal bone cyst, osteoblastoma, enchondroma, chondromyxoid fibroma, nonossifying fibroma, giant cell tumor, chondroblastoma, fibrous dysplasia, and chondrosarcoma. It has been reported that 60% to 70% of patients with an intraosseous lipoma present with symptoms. This article descr

Combined ipsilateral fractures of talus and calcaneus.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency of combined ipsilateral talar and calcaneal fractures, the fracture pattern in combination and the clinical outcome of the combined operative treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Out of 950 patients with calcaneal fractures and 190 patients with talar fractures treated operatively between 1984 and 2003, 11 patients (1% of calcaneal and 6% of talar fractures) were identified with combined ipsilateral talar and calcaneal fractures. Closed reduction and external fixation was performed in one patient with a crush foot injury, and

Complications of intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus.

Most complications of calcaneal fractures are due to the combination of the dynamic nature and the mechanism of the injury itself. Complications are usually secondary to three integral parts of this complex fracture pattern: 1) fracture and depression of the subtalar joint, 2) loss of the height of the calcaneal body with varus rotation, and 3) expansion of the lateral wall of the calcaneus. Other complications occur with less frequency. This article describes the complications and sequelae of old, malunited intra-articular calcaneal fractures in relation to the nature and the components of th

The calcaneus: applications of magnetic resonance imaging.

The calcaneus is the largest bone in the foot and is an important primary weightbearing structure. Pathologic processes that affect this bone may manifest in a variety of clinical presentations, including pain, abnormal motion, instability, or fracture. The purpose of this article is to present a pictorial essay of the wide spectrum of pathologic entities that may affect the calcaneus, emphasizing applications of magnetic resonance imaging and characteristic magnetic resonance features of these processes.

Calcaneus deformity in the ambulant patient with myelomeningocele.

We reviewed our experience of tibialis anterior transfer and anterior release for calcaneus deformity in 46 feet of 26 ambulant patients with myelomeningocele. At an average follow-up of 8.4 years (2 to 17.6) there were 89% who had satisfactory results; 64% of the patients having tibialis anterior transfers were able to stand on their toes. Hip abductor power was a good predictor of a functional transfer. Pre-operative trophic ulceration of the heel increased from 3.2% to 33% if surgery was delayed. Secondary deformities, two-thirds of them into valgus, developed in 76% of feet.

[Osteotomy of the calcaneus for pes cavus in childhood].

Osteotomy of the calcaneus (Dwyer procedure) was performed in 14 children (26 feet) aged between 5 and 15 years. On four occasions it was associated with an osteotomy of the first metatarsal and on three occasions with tarsectomy. The technique is described and the results are analysed. The authors conclude that the results were good in children under the age of 10 whilst the feet were still supple. In children over the age of 10, in whom the feet were more rigid, the gait was improved but the cavus deformity was not improved. The best age for operation is between 6 and 10 years.

Endoscopic resection of symptomatic os calcaneus secundarius.

Os calcaneus secundarius is an accessory ossicle resulting from a secondary ossification center of the anterior facet of the calcaneus. It may cause chronic pain and limitation in inversion motion after inversion ankle sprain. Excision of the ossicle is indicated if the symptoms do not resolve with conservative treatment. A case of symptomatic os calcaneus secundarius, which was successfully resected endoscopically, is presented.

Primary xanthoma of calcaneus bone: Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Xanthoma (or xanthofibroma) is a benign proliferative lesion, mostly seen in soft tissue. Xanthoma of bone is very rare benign primary bone tumor, more frequently seen in men and in patients over 20 years of age. Histologically, it is characterized by mononuclear macrophage-like cells, abundant foam cells, and multinucleated giant cells. It is sometimes discovered coincidentally and the most frequent symptom is pain. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a 50-year-old healthy male patient with primary xanthoma of the calcaneus, who was treated by curettage and bone cement. He present

Medial fracture line significance in calcaneus fracture.

In Sanders' classification of calcaneus fractures, the medial fracture line (subtype C) is close to the tarsal canal, which contains an artery for the talus and calcaneus. We hypothesized that because of this brittle vascular localization, patients with C line fracture patterns might describe radiologic subtalar arthritis more often and have more complaints. The purpose of the present study was to compare the results of C line fracture patterns with other types of calcaneus fractures. A total of 25 surgically treated feet were involved. Regarding Sanders' classification, group 1 included fract

Percutaneous, arthroscopically-assisted osteosynthesis of calcaneus fractures.

BACKGROUND: The development of major and minor wound complications is a major concern in the open reduction and internal fixation of displaced intra-articular calcaneus fractures. Percutaneous, arthroscopically assisted screw osteosynthesis was developed to minimize the surgical approach without risking inadequate reduction of the subtalar joint. The method was applied in selected cases of displaced intra-articular calcaneus fractures with one fracture line crossing the posterior calcaneal facet (Sanders type II fractures). METHODS: Between March 1998 and July 2000, 15 patients were treated w

Os calcaneus secundarius, a relevant differential diagnosis to fracture or pseudarthrosis of processus anterior of the calcaneus: a CT morphologic description.

PURPOSE: A fracture or a pseudarthrosis of the processus anterior calcanei (PAC) as well as a traumatized Os calcaneus secundarius (OCS) is often overlooked. A clinical or conventional radiological differentiation of these is uncertain. Therefore, a CT scan is recommended. The aim of the study was to identify CT morphological differentiators between OCS and pathologies of PAC. METHODS: All CT scans at our trauma center level I from 2010 to 2014, which imaged the entire foot, performed after acute trauma or postoperative control were retrospectively re-examined for OCS, other accessory ossicle

The sural nerve & the calcaneus: A radiographic and anatomical study.

BACKGROUND: The sinus tarsi approach (STA) is a commonly used minimally invasive surgical approach for the fixation of joint depression-type calcaneus fractures. As the sural nerve (SN) is particularly at risk during the STA, understanding the SN's course in relation to bony landmarks on fluoroscopic imaging is crucial. METHODS: Dissection of 19 post-mortem humans were performed to expose the SN. The SN's course was mapped relative to radiographic bony landmarks, anatomical plates for fracture fixation, and the STA incision location. RESULTS: The SN typically enters the cranial part of the c
