Calciphylaxis is a rare disorder of poor prognosis that can lead to intense, painful lesions involving the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Although mostly described in dialysis patients, it can affect patients with normal kidney function. The diagnosis of calciphylaxis is complicated by the absence of a gold standard marker of disease such as a clear histopathological finding. Late diagnosis and advanced lesions can significantly shorten life expectancy. Calciphylaxis wounds can have a major influence on the quality of life of patients, usually due to the immense unbearable pain these patients s

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis combines features of vascular thrombotic occlusion and endoluminal calcification. In this study we examine the expression of osteopontin as a diagnostic marker and its role in lesional pathogenesis.
METHODS: 25 formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded skin biopsies of 20 females and 5 males (mean age of 60 years) with a diagnosis of calciphylaxis were assessed for osteopontin expression.
RESULTS: Lower extremities were the most commonly involved areas; however a truncal and genital distribution was also noted in 3 cases. Renal failure was present in 21 of 25 cases. One pat

Calciphylaxis is a poorly understood and highly morbid syndrome of vascular calcification and skin necrosis. We describe the case of a 52-year old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), inappropriately treated with oral steroids for 18-years who developed renal impairment followed by skin necrosis and gangrene of right hand. She had subcutaneous calcium deposition with bilateral renal stones and widespread vascular calcifications. She was diagnosed with calciphylaxis and in spite of treatment died of a myocardial infarction.

Calciphylaxis is a rare, often very painful and potentially life-threatening disorder at the interface between nephrology and dermatology. It is characterized by skin lesions and ulcerations following calcification and occlusion of cutaneous arterioles. Most patients have chronic kidney disease or are on dialysis. A concert of various, still incompletely understood local and systemic risk factors is necessary to cause the development of calciphylaxis. Since randomized prospective trials are missing, interdisciplinary treatment is based on pathophysiological considerations as well as evidence d

Calciphylaxis is a rare syndrome characterized by calcification of blood vessels and panniculitis in association with ecchymosis and/or skin necrosis. Most commonly, calciphylaxis is seen in patients with chronic renal failure. In this context, bisphosphonates have been successfully applied in some patients. Here we report on a patient with calciphylaxis of unknown origin treated with pamidronate.

Calciphylaxis is a condition with a high mortality rate that is often found in patients with renal failure. It is characterized by soft tissue calcification and painful skin ulceration. A serum calcium-phosphorus product of more than 60 mg2/dl2 indicates great risk for calciphylaxis. The diagnosis is made on the basis of an incisional biopsy showing calcification of the small, subcutaneous arteries.

We report a patient with severe bilateral leg ulceration that was resistant to treatment. A biopsy confirmed the cause as calciphylaxis. Calciphylaxis refers to a syndrome of calcium deposition in the small and intermediate dermal vasculature which can lead to epidermal ischaemia, ulceration and necrosis. Most cases occur in those with chronic renal failure and secondary hyperparathyroidism. We describe the rare presentation of calciphylaxis in a patient with normal renal function and primary hyperparathyroidism who had many classical features. Unfortunately she developed gangrene, sepsis and

Calciphylaxis is a disease of significant morbidity and mortality, predominantly affecting dialysis patients. The term 'calciphylaxis' was coined by Seyle et al. in 1961 to describe calcium deposition in the skin and subcutaneous soft tissue of uremic rats in response to 'triggers' (e.g. trauma, metallic salts) after exposure to 'sensitizing agents' (e.g. vitamin D and parathyroid hormone). In humans, calciphylaxis, however, is not a disorder of induced hypersensitivity. Instead, it is a disorder of cutaneous microvascular occlusion caused by thrombosis and calcification. Progressive, excrucia

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Calciphylaxis is a cutaneous ischaemic vascular disease of small vessels with high morbidity and mortality. To date very few series of patients with this disease have been published, none from a Spanish hospital. The main objectives of this work are to analyze the demographic, clinical and histological profile of patients diagnosed in our department to identify risk factors and potential therapeutic strategies.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We made a retrospective study of the cases seen in the dermatology department with a diagnosis of calciphylaxis and who had a confirmator

BACKGROUND: Violaceous skin lesions that progress to nonhealing ulcerations and gangrene characterize calciphylaxis. These lesions, which are associated with secondary hyperparathyroidism, are resistant to medical therapy and may lead to amputation, uncontrollable sepsis, and death.
METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, patient, disease, and treatment variables were obtained from the patients' medical records. Paired t-tests, chi-square analysis, and two-tailed Fisher's exact tests compared variables. Survival curves were generated using the Kaplan-Meier method; the log-rank test determine

Calciphylaxis is a rare complication in patients undergoing hemodialysis. The pathogenesis and risk factors for this disease are poorly understood, although an association with secondary hyperparathyroidism has been suggested. Only two cases of lower-extremity revascularization of patients with calciphylaxis appear in the literature; this report adds two more.

Calciphylaxis is a rare and potentially fatal small-vessel occlusive disease in which the tunica media becomes calcified, endothelial cells proliferate, and the tunica intima becomes thickened and fibrotic. Calciphylaxis typically occurs in the setting of end-stage renal disease with secondary hyperparathyroidism and elevated calcium-phosphorus product. The estimated incidence of calciphylaxis in dialysis or kidney transplant patients is 1 to 4%; however, the incidence of non-uremic calciphylaxis is unknown. We assessed postmarketing adverse event reports to further characterize cases of calci

Calciphylaxis is a rare and poorly understood disease that almost exclusively occurs in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It is characterized by the calcification of medium and small dermal arterioles with resultant gangrenous necrosis. Patients develop exquisitely painful skin ulceration and necrosis, typically in the lower extremities. Treatments are severely limited, and mortality is high, as few treatment options provide a survival benefit. Improvement in a few calciphylaxis cases affecting the extremities or abdomen have been reported using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), however, very fe

BACKGROUND: Calciphylaxis or calcific uremic arteriolopathy (CUA) is a cutaneous disease with ulcerations secondary to calcification of cutaneous and subcutaneous small arteries and arterioles. It is a rare but severe disease with significant morbidity and mortality affecting 1 to 4% of dialysis patients. The circumstances of occurrence are multiple.
CASE: We report the case of a severe bilateral lower limb calciphylaxis in a 69-year-old, obese, hemodialysis patient with a recent diagnosis of Graves' disease complicated with hypercalcemia and cardiac arrhythmia requiring the use of vitamin K

A 58-year-old man with end-stage renal disease presented with hypotension and emesis, pale conjunctivae, and a distended abdomen. Labs revealed hypercalcemia and leukocytosis. Abdominal imaging showed gastric pneumatosis. Endoscopy demonstrated significant hemorrhage and necrosis in the gastric cardia and fundus. Biopsies revealed acute ulcerative gastritis and focal intravascular calcium phosphate crystals. The patient remained nil per os and was placed on omeprazole and sucralfate. Repeat endoscopy demonstrated mucosal healing. Gastric calciphylaxis in the setting of gastric pneumatosis is a

Calciphylaxis is a rare but devastating condition that has continued to challenge the medical community since its early descriptions in the scientific literature many decades ago. It is predominantly seen in patients with chronic kidney failure treated with dialysis (uremic calciphylaxis) but is also described in patients with earlier stages of chronic kidney disease and with normal kidney function. In this review, we discuss the available medical literature regarding risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment of both uremic and nonuremic calciphylaxis. High-quality evidence for the evaluation and

Calciphylaxis is a small vessel vasculopathy with medial calcification associated with intimal proliferation, fibrosis and thrombosis. This study discusses the clinical features and treatment of calciphylaxis and assesses the prognosis of patients with calciphylaxis. All patients admitted to vascular or renal wards from January 2003 to December 2004 at Royal Perth Hospital, with diagnosis of calciphylaxis confirmed histologically were included in the study. Five patients were included in the study; four male and one female. Three patients had end stage renal failure on haemodialysis and two ha
