Stress-induced blood pressure responses in SHR: effect of dietary calcium.

To assess the influence of dietary calcium on stress-induced blood pressure responses, spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats were placed on low Ca2+ (0.1%) and Na+ (0.25%), intermediate Ca2+ (1.0%) and Na+ (0.45%), or high Ca2+ (2.0%) and Na+ (1.0%) diets for 13 wk prior to measuring blood pressure (BP) responses in an aversive classical conditioning paradigm. Forty-eight hours prior to testing, catheters were placed in a femoral artery under halothane anesthesia for recording direct pressure. On recovery the rats were classically conditioned to a 10-s tone followed

Bone mineral, serum calcium, and dietary intakes of mother/daughter pairs.

Data on factors potentially responsible for familial differences in the incidence of postmenopausal osteoporosis were obtained for 26 mother/daughter pairs. The factors were: bone mineral content of the radius (BMC); bone mineral content to bone width ratio (BMC/W); serum ionized (Ca++), ultrafiltrable (UF-Ca) and total calcium (T-Ca), ultrafiltrable and total magnesium, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D; and 7-day dietary intakes of selected nutrients. The BMC, BMC/W, and serum calcium fractions of the mothers were significantly correlated with those of the daughters. Although the BMC of the mothers wa

Dietary calcium supplementation increases apoptosis in the distal murine colonic epithelium.

BACKGROUND: Increased dietary calcium might reduce colorectal cancer risk, possibly by reduction of colonic epithelial hyperproliferation, but not all studies have demonstrated this. Little is known about the effects of calcium on colonic apoptosis. AIM: To quantify the effects of increasing calcium on apoptosis and cell proliferation in normal murine colonic crypt epithelium. METHODS: Twenty one day old male C57B1/6 mice were fed either control AIN-76 diet (0.5% calcium wt/wt; n = 10) or the same supplemented with calcium carbonate (1.0% calcium; n = 10) for 12 weeks. Apoptotic cells in pro

Leg abnormality associated with dietary excessive calcium carbonate in broiler chicks.

When chicks were fed excessive CaCo3, some of them manifested the toes and legs bent in an abnormal direction and final inability to walk in proportion to the dose of calcium. However, chicks fed CaHPO4 containing the same dose of Ca, instead of CaCO3, showed no abnormality of the legs. The leg abnormality of chicks fed excessive CaCO3 resembled the symptom of chicks fed a vitamin D-deficient diet, but there slight differences in serum Ca level and in the findings of the legs by roentgenography between both chick groups. In the radiograph of chicks fed excessive CaCO3, definite radiolucent are

Consumption of calcium-fortified cereal bars to improve dietary calcium intake of healthy women: randomized controlled feasibility study.

UNLABELLED: Calcium is an important structural component of the skeletal system. Although an adequate intake of calcium helps to maintain bone health and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, many women do not meet recommended daily intakes of calcium. Previous interventions studies designed to increase dietary intake of women have utilized primarily dairy sources of calcium or supplements. However, lactose intolerance, milk protein allergies, or food preferences may lead many women to exclude important dairy sources of dietary calcium. Therefore, we undertook a 9 week randomized crossover design t

Substitution of dietary calcium chloride for calcium carbonate reduces urinary ph and urinary phosphorus excretion in adult cats.

In a 4x4-wk cross-over study, eight adult cats were given four moist diets containing identical amounts of calcium (13.9 mmol/MJ) but with different ratios of calcium carbonate to calcium chloride, the calcium salts providing half of the total dietary calcium. Increasing amounts of calcium chloride were substituted for equimolar amounts of calcium carbonate. Higher intakes of calcium chloride caused significantly lower pH values in postprandial and 24-h urine samples. The urinary excretion of ammonium and titratable acid rose with increasing calcium chloride intake. The urinary concentrations

Parathyroid gland calcium receptor mRNA levels are unaffected by chronic renal insufficiency or low dietary calcium in rats.

Extracellular ionized calcium (Ca(2+)) is the primary physiological regulator of parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion and the G protein-coupled receptor (CaR) that mediates this response has been cloned from bovine and human parathyroid glands. The Ca(2+) set-point for the regulation of PTH secretion is right-shifted in primary hyperparathyroidism (1°HPT), but whether there is a similar shift in 2°HPT is unclear. Additionally, the molecular defects associated with such changes in the set-point remain uncharacterized. These experiments were designed to determine (1) if changes in set-point occur

The alteration of magnesium, calcium and phosphorus metabolism by dietary magnesium deprivation in postmenopausal women is not affected by dietary boron deprivation.

A study with human volunteers was conducted to test the hypothesis that naturally occurring inadequate intakes of magnesium induce negative magnesium balance and undesirable changes in calcium metabolism variables, and that these changes are influenced by dietary boron. Diets composed of ordinary Western foods providing approximately 118 and 318 mg Mg/d and approximately 0.25 and 3.25 mg B/d were fed in a double-blind Latin square design to 13 healthy, post menopausal Caucasian women (aged 50-78 years) living in a metabolic unit. The impact of dietary calcium content on phosphorus absorption and retention in growing pigs is enhanced by dietary microbial phytase supplementation.

Sixty growing male pigs were used to test the hypothesis that high dietary Ca content reduces P absorption to a greater extent in microbial phytase-supplemented diets via reducing inositol phosphate (IP) degradation and enhancing P precipitation. Pigs were equally allotted over diets with three Ca contents 2·0, 5·8 and 9·6 g/kg with or without microbial phytase (0 v. 500 FTU/kg) in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement. Faeces and urine were collected at the end of the 21-d experimental period. Subsequently, pigs were euthanised and digesta quantitatively collected from different gastrointestinal trac

Effect of dietary Ca:P ratio on ionized calcium and calcium homeostasis in cats with early-stage chronic kidney disease.

The aim of the study was to compare two renal foods with different Ca:P ratios on manifestation of hypercalcemia and regulation of calcium homeostasis in cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Nine cats (11.0 ± 2.0 y) with naturally-occurring IRIS Stage I or II CKD were fed a senior wellness food for 28-days, then randomized into two groups and fed either a food providing 1.8 g/Mcal Ca, 1.3 g/Mcal P, and Ca:P ratio of 1.4:1 (MOD-Ca:P), or a food providing 2.4 g/Mcal Ca, 1.3 g/Mcal P, and Ca:P ratio of 1.8:1 (HIGH-Ca:P) for 56 days. A study of dietary calcium and other nutrients in idiopathic renal calcium stone formers with low bone mineral content.

PURPOSE: Patients with calcium renal stone are reported to have lower bone mineral density. The state of bone density in patients with renal stones have different explanations but the role of nutritional factors seems to be crucial. A group of 48 consecutive male calcium renal stone formers was studied to investigate the relationship between bone density and dietary intake. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients completed a dietary diary for a 3-day period during normal diet. Nutrients and calories were calculated by food composition tables using a computerized procedure. Bone densitometry was asses

Relationship between the True Digestibility of Dietary Calcium and Gastrointestinal Microorganisms in Goats.

The current study was performed to examine the relationship between the true digestibility of calcium (TDC) in the diet and bacterial community structure in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of goats. Twenty-six Nubian healthy female goats were selected as experimental animals, and their TDC was determined using metabolic experiments. Eight goats were grouped into the high digestibility of Calcium (HC) phenotype, and another eight were grouped into the low digestibility of Calcium (LC) phenotype. Their bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicons from the rumen, abomasum, jejunum, cecum, and colon content

The influence of dietary fat and intestinal pH on calcium bioaccessibility: an in vitro study.

In vivo studies measuring true fractional calcium (Ca) absorption have shown that dietary fat is a significant predictor of absorption and is influenced by luminal pH levels. However, whether changes in Ca bioaccessibility (CaB) can explain the effects on absorption has not been examined. In the current study, we examined two high fat diets enriched in either monounsaturated fatty acids or saturated fatty acids (SFA), and a low-fat diet (LFD), each with 50 mg Ca, and measured CaB at different intestinal regions during normal acidic or higher (pH = 7) gastrointestinal conditions using an in vit

Parathyroid hormone and calcitriol in hypertension caused by dietary calcium deficiency in rats.

Hypertension caused by calcium deficiency in the diet has been linked with an increase in parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitriol levels. We evaluated arterial blood pressure (ABP), PTH, and calcitriol in normotensive Sprague-Dawley rats (SDR) and in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) fed from weaning on a control diet with a normal calcium content (1%) or a low-calcium diet (0.1%). The calcemia was also measured in the rats by colorimetric methods. The low-calcium diet decreased the calcemia in both strains and brought about an increase in the ABP which was significant in adult SDR and pa

Effects of reducing dietary cation-anion balance on calcium kinetics in sheep.

A Ca kinetic study with a four-compartment model being fitted to radioisotope and balance data using the CONSAM (conversational, simulation, analysis, and modeling) computer program was conducted to examine the effects of dietary cation-anion balance, calculated as milliequivalents [(Na + K] - (Cl + S)]. Twelve crossbred wethers were used as eucalcemic control (period 1); then Ca loss during lactation was simulated by continuous infusion of ethylene glycol tetraacetate (period 2). Dietary cation-anion balance was manipulated by supplementation of various mineral salts and was +339, +35, and -1

Duodenal and ileal adaptation to dietary calcium restriction: in vivo studies in the rat.

Intestinal adaptation by the growing rat to a low-calcium diet was studied by in situ perfusion of duodenum and ileum in vivo. Rats were fed diets containing either 1.2 or 0.02% Ca for 17-24 days. To study plasma-to-lumen flux and net calcium absorption, rats were loaded parenterally with 45Ca and perfused intraluminally with 3.4 mM calcium. Calcium restriction caused net absorption in ileum to increase fourfold, in duodenum almost twofold. With calcium restriction, plasma-to-lumen flux decreased in duodenum but not in ileum and was small relative to absorption. However, net calcium secretion,
