Formation of Monolithic Magnesium-Calcium Carbonates Through Aggregation of Carbonate-Cluster Nanodroplets.

Mineral nucleation is a fundamental process of paramount importance to various fields, including geology, biomineralization, and industrial manufacturing. Recently, studies on the biominerals of calcium carbonate and phosphate have revealed the presence of a dense liquid phase prior to the formation of an amorphous solid phase. Here, we show that liquid-liquid phase separation occurs in a non-aqueous solution where magnesium and calcium carbonates are dissolved in ethanol with excess triethylamine. The nanodroplets can be kinetically trapped by triethylamine. We found that molecular complexes

Efficient removal of copper from wastewater by using mechanically activated calcium carbonate.

Copper removal from aqueous solution is necessary from the stances of both environmental protection and copper resource recycling. It is important to develop a new chemical precipitation method suitable for removing copper particularly at low concentration as the case of waste mine water, with regards to the various problems related to the current precipitation methods by using strong alkalis or soluble sulfides. In this research, we studied a possible chemical precipitation of copper ions at concentration around 60 mg/L or lower by cogrinding copper sulfate in water with calcium carbonate (Ca

Phosphate and carbonate salts of calcium support robust bone building in osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: Calcium is an essential cotherapy in osteoporosis treatment. The relative effectiveness of various calcium salts for this purpose is uncertain. Many older women with osteoporosis have phosphorus intakes of <70% of the Recommended Dietary Allowance. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to test the hypothesis that calcium phosphate would better support anabolic bone building than would calcium carbonate. DESIGN: This study was a 12-mo, randomized, positive-comparator, 2-arm, single-blind clinical trial in 211 patients treated with teriparatide who consumed <1000 mg phosphorus/d. Participan

Biogenic Vaterite Calcium Carbonate-Silver/Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Film for Wound Dressing.

Vaterite, a spherical polymorph of CaCO3, shows potential as a carrier for the stable and controlled release of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), preventing their aggregation or loss of efficacy during application. Furthermore, the embedding of CaCO3-Ag in a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix helps effectively encapsulate and protect the CaCO3-Ag microspheres and provides mechanical stability for better contact with the wound surface. This article focuses on the fabrication of an antimicrobial and biocompatible absorbent film embedded with precipitated biogenic vaterite CaCO3-Ag microspheres. The im

Highly hydrated paramagnetic amorphous calcium carbonate nanoclusters as an MRI contrast agent.

Amorphous calcium carbonate plays a key role as transient precursor in the early stages of biogenic calcium carbonate formation in nature. However, due to its instability in aqueous solution, there is still rare success to utilize amorphous calcium carbonate in biomedicine. Here, we report the mutual effect between paramagnetic gadolinium ions and amorphous calcium carbonate, resulting in ultrafine paramagnetic amorphous carbonate nanoclusters in the presence of both gadolinium occluded highly hydrated carbonate-like environment and poly(acrylic acid). Gadolinium is confirmed to enhance the wa

A comparative study of mud-like and coralliform calcium carbonate gallbladder stones.

To gain insight to underlying mechanism of the formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3 ) gallbladder stones, we did comparative study of stones with mud appearance and those with coralliform appearance. A total of 93 gallbladder stones with mud appearance and 50 stones with coralliform appearance were analyzed. The appearance, color, texture, and the detection of Clonorchis sinensis eggs by microscopic examination were compared between the two groups. Then, the material compositions of stones were analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and the spectrogram characteristics were com

Adsorption of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles on silica and calcium carbonate sand.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles have the potential to be used in the characterization of porous rock formations in oil fields as a contrast agent for NMR logging because they are small enough to traverse through nanopores and enhance contrast by shortening NMR T2 relaxation time. However, successful development and application require detailed knowledge of particle stability and mobility in reservoir rocks. Because nanoparticle adsorption to sand (SiO2) and rock (often CaCO3) affects their mobility, we investigated the thermodynamic equilibrium adsorption behavior of citric a

Rheological behaviors of polypropylene/calcium carbonate nanocomposites under axial vibration force field.

Structures and data processing method of the self-developed multi-function and all-electric rheometer (MAR) for polymer composites were introduced. Polypropylene (PP)/Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) nanocomposites were prepared. And the homogeneity of the composite was characterized by its rheological behavior. With MAR, the effects of vibration parameters on apparent shear viscosity of PP/CaCO3 nanocomposites were investigated. The results show that, the viscosity of the nanocomposites is much lower in dynamic test with proper vibration, comparing with it in corresponding steady-state test at same

Efficient phosphate binding using a combination of gluconolactate and carbonate calcium salts.

Although renal-failure-related hyperphosphataemia can be corrected by various phosphate binders, there remains a need for safer and more efficient formulations to precipitate phosphate. This work describes both a theoretical approach and a phosphate precipitation test in order to design efficient binding calcium salts formulations. The results show that the combination of a soluble calcium salt (the gluconolactate) and a proton-consuming calcium salt (the carbonate) can precipitate phosphate effectively. Furthermore, the theoretical computations correlate well with the ability of the salt to b

Safety and efficacy of calcium carbonate in children with chronic renal failure.

The safety and clinical efficacy of calcium carbonate therapy in children with chronic renal failure were assessed in 68 patients (average age 8.38 years) during a mean follow-up period of 19.9 months (range 1.2-49.4). Forty-seven episodes of hypercalcaemia occurred in 29 children (3.5 episodes per 100 patient-months). There were no significant differences in mean GFR or biochemical parameters between these patients at the start of calcium carbonate therapy and the group of children who never experienced hypercalcaemia. Good control of secondary hyperparathyroidism and a significant reduction

The precipitation of calcium carbonate polymorphs in vitro at 37 degrees C.

In order to determine some of the factors that affect the formation of the three polymorphs of calcium carbonate in gallstones, its precipitation from undisturbed solutions containing calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate was studied. The variation in the amount of calcium carbonate formed with time was studied by weighing the precipitate, and the percentages of calcite, vaterite, and aragonite were determined by x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effects of additives and stirring were noted. Minor changes in conditions were sufficient to affect the formation of the polymorphs, and all th

Calcium Citrate Versus Calcium Carbonate in the Management of Chronic Hypoparathyroidism: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Crossover Clinical Trial.

In hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT), calcium supplementation is virtually always required, although the disease is likely to be associated with an increased risk of nephrolithiasis. The use of calcium citrate (Ca-Cit) theoretically could have a positive impact on the nephrolithiasis risk because citrate salts are used to reduce this risk. Our objective was to evaluate the potential therapeutic advantage of Ca-Cit in comparison with calcium carbonate (CaCO3 ) in HypoPT, on nephrolithiasis risk factors, as well as to their ability to maintain desirable serum calcium levels. We also evaluated these pr

Proteomic analysis of a rare urinary stone composed of calcium carbonate and calcium oxalate dihydrate: a case report.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the matrix protein of a rare urinary stone that contained calcium carbonate. A urinary stone was extracted from a 34-year-old male patient with metabolic alkalosis. After X-ray diffractometry and infrared analysis of the stone, proteomic analysis was carried out. The resulting mass spectra were evaluated with protein search software, and matrix proteins were identified. X-ray diffraction and infrared analysis confirmed that the stone contained calcium carbonate and calcium oxalate dihydrate. Of the identified 53 proteins, 24 have not been p

Substitution of dietary calcium chloride for calcium carbonate reduces urinary ph and urinary phosphorus excretion in adult cats.

In a 4x4-wk cross-over study, eight adult cats were given four moist diets containing identical amounts of calcium (13.9 mmol/MJ) but with different ratios of calcium carbonate to calcium chloride, the calcium salts providing half of the total dietary calcium. Increasing amounts of calcium chloride were substituted for equimolar amounts of calcium carbonate. Higher intakes of calcium chloride caused significantly lower pH values in postprandial and 24-h urine samples. The urinary excretion of ammonium and titratable acid rose with increasing calcium chloride intake. The urinary concentrations

Strontium Carbonate and Strontium-Substituted Calcium Carbonate Nanoparticles Form Protective Deposits on Dentin Surface and Enhance Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells Mineralization.

Strontium acetate is applied for dental hypersensitivity treatment; however, the use of strontium carbonates for this purpose has not been described. The use of Sr-carbonate nanoparticles takes advantage of both the benefits of strontium on dentin mineralization and the abrasive properties of carbonates. Here in, we aimed to synthesize strontium carbonate and strontium-substituted calcium carbonate nanoparticles and test them as potential compounds in active dentifrices for treating dental hypersensitivity. For this, SrCO3, Sr0.5Ca0.5CO3, and CaCO3 nanoparticles were precipitated using Na2CO3,

Effect of oral calcium carbonate on uterine contractility: a pilot randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Ineffective uterine contractions contribute to labour dystocia and are a leading indication for primary caesarean delivery. Although oxytocin is the standard therapy for augmentation, prolonged exposure may result in receptor desensitisation and reduced effectiveness. Calcium is essential for myometrial contraction; however, systemic calcium homeostasis is tightly regulated, and it is unclear whether oral calcium supplementation can meaningfully influence uterine activity. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of oral calcium carbonate on uterine contractility. METHODS: We condu

Multifunctional therapeutic platform based on polydeoxyribonucleotide-loaded calcium carbonate particles for osteoarthritis management.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is associated with a mildly acidic, oxidative, and inflammatory joint microenvironment that accelerates cartilage degeneration and limits the efficacy of intra-articular therapies. However, currently available intra-articular therapies fail to simultaneously address the three key pathological drivers of acidosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation that sustain this self-reinforcing OA disease loop. Here, we developed polydeoxyribonucleotide-loaded calcium carbonate (PDRN-CaCO3) particles as a multifunctional intra-articular platform that combines pH-responsive drug delivery

Could oral calcium carbonate mitigate tartaric acid toxicity in dogs? A novel hypothesis.

Grape and raisin ingestion causes acute renal failure in dogs, recently attributed to tartaric acid toxicity. Standard treatments lack specific antidotes, creating a need for novel therapeutic strategies. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3 could theoretically neutralize tartaric acid in the gastrointestinal tract by forming insoluble calcium tartrate, potentially reducing systemic absorption. Although not yet clinically validated, analogous approaches for oxalate and fluoride poisonings suggest feasibility. This Viewpoint presented chemical and physiological rationales, stoichiometric calculations, prac

The nanoformula of zoledronic acid and calcium carbonate targets osteoclasts and reverses osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is known as an imbalance in bone catabolism and anabolism. Overactive bone resorption causes bone mass loss and increased incidence of fragility fractures. Antiresorptive drugs are widely used for osteoporosis treatment, and their inhibitory effects on osteoclasts (OCs) have been well established. However, due to the lack of selectivity, their off-target and side effects often bring suffering to patients. Herein, an OCs' microenvironment-responsive nanoplatform HA-MC/CaCO3/ZOL@PBAE-SA (HMCZP) is developed, consisting of succinic anhydride (SA)-modified poly(β-amino ester) (PBAE) m
