The ability to use sperm motility parameters, obtained by computer-assisted sperm motility analysis (CASA), as an aid to selecting sperm samples for artificial insemination (AI) would have considerable benefits for commercial organizations and for the captive breeding of endangered species. In this study the Hobson sperm tracker (HST) was validated for use with spermatozoa from Callithrix jacchus, the common marmoset, by comparing values for straight line velocity by CASA with those obtained by direct measurement of sperm tracks. Using the settings established during validation, ejaculated and

In a retrospective study sex ratio and mortality were analysed in a captive colony of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). Seven hundred and thirty-five infants in 294 litters (20 singletons, 119 twins, 140 triplets, 14 quadruplets) out of 57 breeding females were evaluated. The sex ratio at birth was 0.95 males:1.0 females. The frequency of males and females, as well as the sex composition of twins and triplets confirm the assumption of dizygotic twinning in the common marmoset. According to age at death, 9 categories were differentiated, with perinatal mortality being the highest. Once ear

Cotton top marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) were orally dosed with 3, 1, 0.1 or 0 mg 3,4,3',4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCB)/kg body weight twice per week for 18-23 weeks. Severe toxicity occurred in the highest dose group. Clinical signs of toxicity were a rapid decrease in body weight, alopecia, abnormal nail growth, nodular enlargement of the nipple area and scaly skin. Haematological analysis of peripheral blood revealed mild leukocytosis and anemia. Biochemical alterations observed were elevated triglyceride levels and cholesterol levels. Histopathology revealed dose dependent changes in

The sexual behaviour of 7 pairs of marmosets was observed during 30 minute tests for 44-68 days and blood samples were collected from females for measurement of plasma progesterone, testosterone and oestrone. Copulations occurred throughout the ovarian cycle of 24-30 days. Females used a "tongue-flicking" display both as an invitational behaviour (proceptive tongue-flicks) and during copulation (receptive tongue-flicks) most frequently during the peri-ovulatory period. Frequencies of proceptivity were correlated positively with high mean levels of testosterone and oestrone during the cycle and

A survey was carried out to characterise the bacterial and mycoplasma flora of a closed colony of marmosets, Callithrix jacchus. Bordetella bronchiseptica and Staphylococcus aureus were the only potential bacterial pathogens isolated from the colony; Candida albicans was also identified. S aureus and C albicans were the only organisms which were associated with macroscopic lesions or overt disease. Post mortem examination of the animals proved only reliable method of establishing the presence of some bacterial species in the colony, eg, B bronchiseptica and of obtaining a reliable estimate of

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a widely used nonhuman primate model in biomedical research. However, access to infant tissues is limited, and descriptive histological information for early postnatal organ development is needed. We examined a qualitative, descriptive histological overview of five major organs (liver, kidney, spleen, lung and heart) in infant (0-3 weeks) and adult (>12 months) marmosets using hematoxylin and eosin, Ki67 immunohistochemistry, Alcian blue-periodic acid-Schiff, and Sirius red staining. The examined infant livers showed multilayered hepatocyte cords, hi

Diethylpropion (1-phenyl-2-diethylamine-1-propanone hydrochloride) is a stimulant drug with reinforcing properties that is used to treat obesity in humans. While the anorectic properties of diethylpropion are mediated by a noradrenergic mechanism, stimulant properties depend on its effects on the serotonergic (5-HT) and/or dopaminergic systems. In this study we investigated the role of the 5-HT1A-receptor in the acute behavioral effects of diethylpropion in marmosets (Callithrix penicillata). Animals were pretreated with the selective 5-HT1A-receptor antagonist, N-[2-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-pip

Two male marmosets underwent vasectomy without complications. Azoospermia was confirmed by computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) 5 weeks later. Both were co-housed with embryo transfer recipient females 6 weeks after surgery. Vasectomy may be accompanied by post-vasectomy semen analysis such as CASA, to ensure safe and reliable sterilization for research and captive breeding management in marmosets.

Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) are a New World nonhuman primate (NHP) whose popularity as a research model continues to expand. Marmosets were identified as the predominant NHP species that is susceptible to spontaneous Pseudomonas infections based on a 27-year survey in a primate colony, encompassing several NHP species. 26 common marmosets were retrospectively identified and evaluated for spontaneous Pseudomonas spp. infections. Clinical symptoms included lethargy, weight loss, gastrointestinal issues (diarrhea, bloating, vomiting, poor appetite), increased respiratory effort, and dif

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), a small South American monkey, is an important nonhuman primate model in the study of aging and age-related neurodegenerative disease, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and related dementias. Thorough characterization of the wild type marmoset brain agingmodel, including biomarkers of aging and neural degeneration, will further the marmoset's utility in translational research. We measured serum concentration of four key biomarkers of neural degeneration [total tau (T-tau), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), neurofilament light ch

The entorhinal cortex (EC) is associated with impaired cognitive function such as in the case of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease. The present study provides a detailed analysis of the cytoarchitectural and myeloarchitectural organization of the EC in the common marmoset Callithrix jacchus. Data were collected using Nissl and fiber stained preparations, supplemented with acetylcholinesterase and parvalbumin immunohistochemistry. The EC layers and subfields in the marmoset seem to be architectonically similar to those that have been proposed in nonhuman primates

Marmosets are used as preclinical model in reproductive research. In contrast to other primates, they display short gestation times rendering this species valid for exploration of effects on fertility. However, their peculiar endocrine regulation differs from a those of macaques and humans. We subjected male marmosets to previously clinically tested hormonal regimens that are known to effectively suppress spermatogenesis. Beside a control group, seven groups (each n=6) were investigated for different periods of up to 42 months: regimen I, (four groups) received testosterone undecanoate (TU) an

BACKGROUND: Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) are susceptible to gastrointestinal diseases. Sensitivity to nutritional elements, for example gluten, has been suggested, but a serological screening has not been performed yet.
METHODS: A gluten-containing diet was offered to 24 animals, followed by a gluten-free diet. During these diets, serum IgA antibodies to gliadin (AGA), tissue transglutaminase (tTG), deamidated gliadin (ADGA), and glycoprotein 2 (AGP2A) were determined. Body weight, diarrhea, and other clinical symptoms were recorded.
RESULTS: Gluten increased AGA, tTG, and AGP2A con

Metabolic bone disease was diagnosed in an 11-month-old female common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). It was depressed, reluctant to move, and was cachectic and small for its age. Laboratory findings included anaemia, azotaemia and an inverse calcium to phosphorus ratio. The radiological findings showed simultaneous signs of osteomalacia and soft-tissue calcification. There was decreased bone density with lytic areas in the pelvis and femur, and severe bilateral nephrocalcinosis. Postmortem examination revealed marked focal dystrophic calcification of the epi- and myocardium. Calcium and vitami

Recent studies in non-human primates support a role for the subthalamic nucleus in the expression of parkinsonian symptomatology, and it has been proposed that subthalamic lesions may provide a surgical treatment for the symptoms of Parkinson's disease in humans. We have applied a broad range of behavioural tests to characterize the effects of lesions of the subthalamic nucleus on parkinsonian symptoms in the unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesioned marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). Thirteen marmosets were trained on a battery of behavioural tasks that were conducted at regular intervals be

To examine whether acute dystonia is induced by neuroleptic treatment, common marmosets were treated with haloperidol orally twice a week over 25 weeks until dystonic behavior was elicited. Movement disorders such as acute dystonia were observed 6 weeks after the initial treatment, and had appeared in all treated animals by 25 weeks. Once these movement disorders were induced, they consistently reappeared after further treatment with haloperidol, and once haloperidol dosing was discontinued, the episodes vanished. Then, various neuroleptic drugs (bromperidol, chlorpromazine, risperidone thiori

The objective of the study was to develop a method for artificial insemination (AI) in the common marmoset, a New World primate species. For AI to be successful, sperm must be deposited at an appropriate site and time in the female reproductive tract, details of which are currently not available for Callitrichid species. Epididymal sperm were deposited in the cervix of 18 marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) around the time of expected ovulation using either 3, 2, or 1 inseminations. Six out of 18 females conceived, resulting in the first reported births following AI in this species. These pr

An outbreak of Bordetella bronchiseptica pneumonia occurred in a breeding colony of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). 16 animals, all except one under 12 months of age, died suddenly. Extensive lesions of pneumonia and pleurisy were found at necropsy and B. bronchiseptica was isolated from the nasopharynx, trachea and lungs. Older animals had only a mild rhinitis. Colonization of the nasal mucosa occurred in 71 of 156 marmosets.

BACKGROUND: Platynosomiasis is a disease caused by a biliary fluke, which can lead to chronic weight loss and liver damage, contributing to declining health and high mortality rates in non-human primates. The aim of this study was to describe the treatment of platynosomiasis using a Platynosomum sp. 30cH biotherapeutic.
METHODS: A female Callithrix jacchus presented loss of appetite, abdominal distension, pain, and diarrhea. Ultrasound examination revealed findings suggestive of platynosomiasis. The treatment with biotherapeutic Platynosomum sp. 30cH was started, and one globule was given twi
