Camellia sinensis-synthesized silver nanoparticles and meropenem combination against extensively drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae.

New strategies against antimicrobial resistance are urgently needed to address the challenges and health consequences posed by extensively drug-resistant (XDR) clinical isolates. This study explored how effective the green-synthesized silver nanoparticles alone or in combination with meropenem are in combating XDR Klebsiella pneumoniae. Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) isolates were collected from several clinical labs and identified. After carrying out antimicrobial susceptibility testing, XDR isolates were selected for genotypic analysis using ERIC-PCR, and antibiotic resistance genes w

CsNIP2 and CsNIP16 facilitated Al-F transport and hyperaccumulation in tea plants (Camellia sinensis).

Although Al-F complexes (e.g., AlF2+, AlF2+) exist in the tea apoplast and symplast, their root uptake mechanisms and translocation to mature leaves remain elusive. Here, we identified two plasma membrane-localized Nodulin 26-like Intrinsic Proteins (NIPs), CsNIP2 and CsNIP16, as crucial mediators of Al-F complex transport. CsNIP2 is predominantly expressed in roots and enriched in the phloem-epidermic part tissues, whereas CsNIP16 is predominantly expressed in stems and abundantly in xylem tissues. Heterologous expression in yeast revealed that both transporters facilitate Al-F uptake, signif

Characterization of Seven Species of Camellia Oil: Oil Content, Volatile Compounds, and Oxidative Stability.

In this study, we conducted tests on the seeds from four Taiwanese native Camellia species (C. japonica, C. furfuracea, C. laufoshanensis, and C. formosensis) and three commercialized species (C. oleifera, C. brevistyla, and C. sinensis) for comparison. We examined various aspects of these species, such as seed oil content, suitability for mechanical pressing, volatile components (edible flavor), and oil stability (suitability for cooking), to assess the feasibility of using these four native Taiwanese Camellia seeds as sources of edible oil. The results from solvent extraction tests and mecha

Balancing Growth and Defense: Nanoselenium and Melatonin in Tea (Camellia sinensis) Protection against Glufosinate.

Current crop stress resistance research suggests that the prominent stimulants nanoselenium (NSe) and melatonin (MT) might improve tea safety, quality, and stress resistance induced by the widely used nonselective herbicide glufosinate (GLU). Their biofortification effects on tea growth, antioxidant activity, and secondary metabolism pathways response to GLU remain unclear. Here, NSe, MT, and their combination NSe-MT effectively reduced 26.6-50.9% GLU and its metabolites in tea seedlings, balanced the photosystem, enhanced antioxidant defenses, and optimized reactive oxygen species scavenging

Improving the flavor of summer green tea (Camellia sinensis L.) using the yellowing process.

Summer green tea (SGT) has poor flavor due to its high levels of bitterness and astringency. The present study aimed to improve the flavor of SGT using the yellowing process. The results showed that after the yellowing process, the sweetness and overall acceptability increased, and the content of gallated catechins and flavonol glycosides decreased by 30.2% and 27.4%, respectively, as did the bitterness and astringency of SGT. Yellowing caused a decrease in the concentration of some aroma compounds, such as (z)-3-hexen-1-ol, 1-hexanol, pentanal, heptanal and 1-octanol, which caused grassy, flo

Transcriptomic analysis reveals mechanism of light-sensitive albinism in tea plant Camellia sinensis 'Huangjinju'.

BACKGROUND: Camellia sinensis 'Huangjinju' is an albino tea variety developed recently in China. Young leaves of 'Huangjinju' demonstrate bright yellow when cultivated under natural sunlight, but regreens under reduced light intensity. To elucidate the physiological and molecular mechanisms of this light-sensitive albinism, we compared leaf pigmentation, metabolites, cellular ultrastructure and transcriptome between plants cultured under natural sunlight and shade. RESULTS: Shading treatment doubled the chlorophyll concentration and regreened albino leaves; carotenoid also increased by 30%. E

A novel CsRNF-CsHSF24-CsF3'5'H2 module regulates epigallocatechin gallate biosynthesis in Camellia sinensis.

Tea is rich in tea polyphenols, vitamins, amino acids, and other components that have many benefits to health. Catechins are divided into dihydroxy catechins and trihydroxy catechins based on the hydroxylation pattern of their B-ring. Although genes involved in catechin biosynthesis have been extensively studied and several transcription factors have been reported to regulate this process, the regulatory mechanisms controlling catechin biosynthesis remain incompletely understood. In particular, the role of post-translational modifications of transcription factors in catechin biosynthesis is st

Enhancing bioaccessibility of camellia seed oil through whey protein isolate-quercetin complex stabilized emulsions.

Camellia seed oil (CSO) exhibits poor dispersibility and low bioaccessibility during digestion. In this study, a whey protein isolate-quercetin (WPI-Que) complex was developed to fabricate CSO-in-water emulsions. The optimal complex (10 mg Que. was dissolved in 100 mL WPI solution) showed favorable physicochemical and emulsifying properties, and the formation of the complex originated from quercetin-induced conformational changes of WPI structure. Furthermore, the emulsion consisting of 5 g CSO and 10 mL emulsifier solution exhibited a uniform droplet distribution and an absolute zeta potentia

Typification and new synonyms of tea (Camellia sinensis, Theaceae) and one of its infraspecific taxa.

Tea, Camellia sinensis, is a world-widely popular beverage source shrub. Its basionym, Thea sinensis, was lectotypified as a vague illustration, which cannot precisely exhibit the diagnostic character states of the species. Here, a Linnaean specimen of Thea bohea at LINN, Linnaeus C. 152, was designated as the epitype of T. sinensis to avoid potential confusion. This specimen was also selected as the neotype of T. viridis, a heterotypic synonym of C. sinensis. Camellia sinensis var. niaowangensis, T. cantoniensis, T. chinensis var. pubescens, T. oleosa, and T. parvifolia are treated as new het
