[Bacterial meningitis in Yaoundé (Cameroon) in 1999-2000].

All cephalo-spinal fluid (CSF) samples sent to the Yaoundé Pasteur Centre in Cameroon, between July 1999 and June 2000, were cultured and tested for soluble antigens. The percentage of positive samples was 10.4%. The main etiological agents detected were Streptococcus pneumoniae (56.2%), Haemophilus influenzae (18.5%) et Neisseria meningitidis (13.4%). Most of these cases of bacterial meningitis were children (86.7%). The susceptibility of the isolates to antibiotics was investigated. The streptococci and meningococci were mostly susceptible to beta-lactams, but the Gram-negative bacteria were

[Epidemiological study of Paragonimus sp. in south Cameroon].

A study was carried out in 1993 in south Cameroon in order to assess the changes in the incidence rate of human paragonimiasis, and to get information on the transmission pattern of Paragonimus sp. Two human cases have been recorded, and one dog was found infected in the Ntem Valley. The results suggest that a decrease of the incidence rate of paragonimiasis occurred in humans and animals. Paragonimus metacercariae were found in three species of freshwater crabs: Sudanonautes africanus, S. aubryi et S. granulatus, the latter being a new host. Prevalence of infection in crabs increased southerl

[Laryngeal papillomatosis in Cameroon (Central Africa). Anatomical aspects].

52 cases of laryngeal papillomatosis are found in Cameroun during a 6 1/2 year period (1st January 84-30th June 90). The 52 patients are 27 men and 25 women aged 10 months to 65 years. 40 patients (77%) are less than 15 years and present with the juvenile form of laryngeal papillomatosis. Clinically, all the patients have dysphonia and 30% of them complain of dyspnoea. Less frequent symptoms are cough, foreign body sensation in the throat, dysphagia. Endoscopic and histologic aspects of the disease are those classically described.

Alcohol, drugs and sexual abuse in Cameroon's rainforest.

Due to global socio-economical and ecological changes, indigenous societies are exposed to an increased risk of alcohol and substance abuse. Most research on this topic has been done on indigenous communities in Canada, Australia, the US, parts of Europe and New Zealand, leaving indigenous communities in other parts of the world largely unrepresented. This study focuses on alcohol and drug consumption among the Baka: a former hunter-gatherer society in southeastern Cameroon that has been facing drastic socio-ecological changes in the last five decades. During long-term fieldwork we collected e

The epidemiology of hepatitis delta virus infection in Cameroon.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution and risk factors of hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection in Cameroon. DESIGN: We tested for hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen (HBsAg) and anti-HDV antibody 14 150 samples collected during a survey whose participants were representative of the Cameroonian adult population. The samples had already been tested for hepatitis C virus and HIV antibodies. RESULTS: Overall, 1621/14 150 (weighted prevalence=11.9%) participants were HBsAg positive, among whom 224/1621 (10.6%) were anti-HDV positive. In 2011, the estimated numbers of HBsAg positive and

Epidemiology of malignant hemopathies recorded in hospitals in Cameroon.

Data about malignant blood diseases are sparse in Cameroon. Their epidemiology was studied in patients at the General Hospital of Douala (GHD) and the Yaoundé Central Hospital (CHY) from 2004 through 2014. The variables we studied were social and demographic (age, sex, occupation, marital status), clinical (reasons for consultation, clinical signs, year of diagnosis), and biological (blood count, myelogram and blood smear, immunophenotyping, biopsy, and cytogenetics). In all, 4409 files were reviewed and 454 cases identified, documented and confirmed (248 in GHD and 206 in CHY). The prevalence

Mapping of Bancroftian Filariasis in Cameroon: Prospects for Elimination.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is one of the most debilitating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). It still presents as an important public health problem in many countries in the tropics. In Cameroon, where many NTDs are endemic, only scant data describing the situation regarding LF epidemiology was available. The aim of this study was to describe the current situation regarding LF infection in Cameroon, and to map this infection and accurately delineate areas where mass drug administration (MDA) was required. METHODOLOGY: The endemicity status and distribution of LF was assessed in e

Epilepsy and cysticercosis in Northwest Cameroon: a serological study.

PURPOSE: The prevalence of epilepsy in Cameroon is higher than that of the industrialized world and other developing countries. Neurocysticercosis due to Taenia solium infestation has been reported as a major cause of epilepsy in some parts of Cameroon although there are some conflicting data. The prevalence of epilepsy is especially high in the Momo division of the North-West Province of Cameroon. We hypothesized that individuals with epilepsy in this region have a higher percentage of seropositivity to T. solium than matched controls. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study in the Momo s

National surveillance data on the epidemiology of cholera in Cameroon.

Background. The cholera burden in Cameroon has increased during the past 2 decades. During 2010 and 2011, the largest number of cholera cases in Cameroon since February 1971 were reported. This article describes cholera outbreaks during 2010-2011. Methods. Data received from the national surveillance system from 2010 and 2011 were compiled and analyzed. Results. The first suspected cholera cases were reported in the Far North region on 6 May 2010. In 2010, 10 759 cholera cases were reported by 8 of the 10 regions in the country, with 657 deaths (case-fatality ratio [CFR], 6.1%). In 2011, throu

The disease burden of Taenia solium cysticercosis in Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium cysticercosis is an important zoonosis in many developing countries. Human neurocysticercosis is recognised as an important cause of epilepsy in regions where the parasite occurs. However, it is largely underreported and there is a lack of data about the disease burden. Because a body of information on human and porcine cysticercosis in Cameroon is becoming available, the present study was undertaken to calculate the impact of this neglected zoonosis. METHODS: Both the cost and Disability Adjusted Life Year (DALY) estimations were applied. All necessary parameters we

The interaction of Schistosoma haematobium and S. guineensis in Cameroon.

Interactions between schistosomes are complex with some different species being able to mate and hybridize. The epidemiology of schistosomiasis in specific areas of South West Cameroon has evolved remarkably over 30 years as a result of hybridization between Schistosoma guineensis and S. haematobium. Morphological and biological data suggest that S. haematobium replaced S. guineensis in areas of Cameroon through introgressive hybridization. Data are reported on the use of single stranded conformational polymorphism (SSCP) analysis of the nuclear ribosomal second internal transcribed spacer (IT

[Leishmaniasis and phlebotomus of Cameroon: review of current data].

The author updates available data on leishmaniasis and phlebotomine sandflies in Cameroon. After describing the natural environment, we present all the cases of the cutaneous and visceral leishmaniases recorded so far in this country. He refers also to the first biochemical characterisation of Leishmania major MON-26 in Cameroon. The data of a leishmanin skin test survey conducted in the Mokolo cutaneous leishmaniasis focus are presented as well as a repertoire of the phlebotomine sandfly species identified in the country. The implications and shortcomings of these available data are discussed

An update on concurrent malaria and typhoid fever in Cameroon.

Malaria and typhoid fever are endemic diseases in Cameroon, with overlapping signs and symptoms. While the high prevalence of malaria is an established fact, it is only within the past 5 years that an unusually high number of illnesses have been diagnosed as malaria co-existing with typhoid fever. The Widal test is widely used as the sole laboratory test for the diagnosis of typhoid fever. To investigate the extent of the malaria and typhoid fever association, we used blood and stool cultures as additional diagnostic tests for typhoid fever. We report that, of 200 patients presenting with feve

Irrigation, schistosomiasis, and malaria in the Logone Valley, Cameroon.

Field studies of a rice irrigation project in Mayo-Danai, North Cameroon permitted a direct comparison between pre- and post-development data relating to schistosomiasis and malaria infection. A stratified sample of 4,000 inhabitants, representing 8% of the population living in 28 areas at the time of the first survey, was investigated 5 times between 1979 and 1985. Due to the significant population increase since 1982, 1,500 persons were added to the initial sample. The prevalence of schistosomiasis and malaria remained constant over the 6 years. No changes in the transmission sites were obse

Byssinosis in a textile factory in Cameroon: a preliminary study.

To assess the risk of byssinosis in a cotton textile factory in Cameroon a preliminary study was conducted on a random sample of 125 men from production areas and 68 men from non-production areas. Symptoms were assessed by a questionnaire, which also included questions regarding sleep; peak expiratory flow rate (PEF) was measured with a miniature peak flow meter at the end of a working day and total dust concentrations were assessed by static and personal sampling with Casella dust samplers giving values of 6.4 +/- 2.6 mg/m3 (m +/- SD) in production areas and 1.7 +/- 0.7 mg/m3 in control areas
