BACKGROUND: Most studies of Campylobacter infection triggering Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) are conducted in western nations were Campylobacter infection and immunity is relatively rare. In this study, we explored Campylobacter infections, Campylobacter serotypes, autoantibodies to gangliosides, and GBS in Egypt, a country where Campylobacter exposure is common.
METHODS: GBS cases (n = 133) were compared to age- and hospital-matched patient controls (n = 374). A nerve conduction study was performed on cases and a clinical history, serum sample, and stool specimen obtained for all subjects.

Since its recognition as a human pathogen in the early 1970s, Campylobacter jejuni has now emerged as the leading bacterial cause of food-borne gastroenteritis in developed countries. Poultry, particularly chickens, account for the majority of human infections caused by Campylobacter. Reduction or elimination of this pathogen in the poultry reservoir is an essential step in minimizing the public health problem; however, farm-based intervention measures are still not available because of the lack of understanding of the ecological aspects of C. jejuni on poultry farms. Although Campylobacter is

The purpose of the communication is to review the different aspects of the Helicobacter (Campylobacter) pylori infection. The first part of the communication is devoted to the description of the different gastric pathologies induced by the Helicobacter pylori infection and to the different methods used for the detection of this infection. Today a consensus assesses a causal role to Helicobacter pylori in the development of chronic active gastritis (or type B gastritis), in the pathogenesis of duodenal ulcer, and a major contributing factor in the development of peptic ulcer disease. The possib

The presence of Campylobacter pylori was investigated in gastric antral biopsy specimens. In 50 consecutive patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopy microbiological cultures, histological examination and rapid urease test were parallel performed, and a 92 per cent sensitivity and 100 per cent specificity of rapid and cheap urease test were determined. Afterwards--in a prospective study--311 patients were examined for C. p. by the rapid urease test only. C. p. was detected in 92 per cent of duodenal ulcer patients, in 52 per cent of patients with gastric ulcer, in 67 per cent

During diagnostic esophagogastroduodenoscopy, 104 children aged 6 months to 14 years were subjected to spot biopsy of the mucous membrane of the antral part of the stomach and duodenal bulb with a purpose of subsequent studies for Campylobacter pyloris (C. P.) including primary microscopy, the screening-urease test and culture isolation followed by its identification according to all the necessary biochemical tests. C. P. were detected in 50% of the children examined including 9 out of 12 patients suffering from ulcer disease of the duodenum. It was shown that the C. P. incidence noticeably ro

On a number of occasions, there have been descriptions of epidemic achlorhydria in subjects undergoing repeated gastric secretory studies, typically as part of research protocols. We observed a case in a 37-yr-old healthy man undergoing weekly gastric analyses, along with endoscopy and gastric biopsy, as part of a research protocol studying gastric adaptation to aspirin. In the middle of the 2nd wk of aspirin administration, he developed severe nausea and epigastric discomfort. Aspirin administration was discontinued, but, as per protocol, gastric analyses, endoscopies, and biopsies were conti

Two outbreaks of campylobacter enteritis in residential student populations are described. In the first outbreak, 34 of 240 students in one hall of residence became ill over the course of 4 or 5 days. A single serotype of C. jejuni was isolated from sample of faeces. Sera collected demonstrated that the students had little pre-existing antibody and antibody responses were demonstrated in those who were infected. About 30% of students with serological evidence for infection with C. jejuni did not have gastro-intestinal symptoms. In the second outbreak, 77 of 300 agricultural students developed

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter is the most common cause of bacterial diarrhea in the United States; resistance to macrolides and fluoroquinolones limits treatment options. We examined the epidemiology of US Campylobacter infections and changes in resistance over time.
METHODS: The Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network receives information on laboratory-confirmed Campylobacter cases from 10 US sites, and the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System receives a subset of isolates from these cases for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. We estimated trends in incidence of Campylo

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a rare disease triggered by postinfectious mechanisms. The disease concerns all ages, and is widely distributed around the world. The principal risks are respiratory failure, especially during the initial phase of the disease, and persisting deficit at long term. Among the infectious known agents, Campylobacter jejuni and CMV represent more than 40% of GBS causes. The clinical presentation, and the long-term prognosis of GBS related to these two etiologies are different. The physiopathological mechanisms of the nervous attack are probably also different. There

BACKGROUND: Guillain-Barré syndrome is the most common cause of acute neuromuscular paralysis and is considered a post-infectious disease.
METHODS: Twenty patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome admitted to the Neurosciences Centre at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences from November 1997 to August 1998 were investigated for evidence of antecedent infections. This case-control study included 2 controls for each patient, one a household control and the other an age- and sex-matched hospital control suffering from a neurological illness other than Guillain-Barré syndrome. Prevalence of thermophilic Campylobacter infections in humans, chickens and crows was determined in a cross-sectional study that was carried out in urban and rural areas of Morogoro region, Tanzania during the period of January 2003 to December 2004. A total of 632 human stool samples, 536 cloacal swabs from local and broiler chickens and 22 intestinal contents from crows were screened for presence of thermophilic campylobacters using Skirrow's protocol. Representative Campylobacter jejuni isolates from human and chicken samples were also analysed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as a defini

Preceding infection with Campylobacter jejuni (Cj) occurs in approximately 30% of patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), and the risk of GBS following Cj infection is increased by 77 to 100-fold. GBS is most often of the axonal subtype and is thought to be mediated by IgG antibodies to peripheral nerve gangliosides that are cross reactive with oligosaccharides in the Cj lipopolysaccharides (LPS). The antibodies are thought to be induced by molecular mimicry, where immune reactivity to a cross reactive epitope in the infectious organism and normal tissue can cause autoimmune disease. Clon

Campylobacter are gram-negative bacilli commonly known to cause gastro-intestinal infection; however, species like Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus (C. fetus) have been documented to cause severe systemic illness, especially in immunocompromised hosts. It has been linked with severe sepsis, septic arthritis, endocarditis, and subdural abscess. We report a case of a 65-year-old male with a history of human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) and chronic hepatitis B presenting with high fevers, pain, and swelling in multiple joints. His blood cultures grew C. fetus. Synovial fluid analysi

BACKGROUND: In Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), the diversity in electrophysiological subtypes is unexplained but may be determined by geographical factors and preceding infections. Acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) is a frequent GBS variant in Japan and one study proposed that in Japan, Campylobacter jejuni infections exclusively elicit AMAN. In The Netherlands C jejuni is the predominant type of preceding infection yet AMAN is rare. This may indicate that not all Dutch GBS patients with C jejuni infections have AMAN.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if GBS patients with a preceding C jejuni infecti

Both Helicobacter pylori and Campylobacter jejuni are highly prevalent Gram-negative microaerophilic bacteria which are gastrointestinal pathogens of humans; H. pylori colonizes the gastroduodenal compartment and C. jejuni the intestinal mucosa. Although H. pylori causes chronic gastric infection leading to gastritis, peptic ulcers and eventually gastric cancer while C. jejuni causes acute infection inducing diarrhoeal disease, the endotoxin molecules of both bacterial species contrastingly contribute to their pathogenesis and the autoimmune sequelae each induces. Compared with enterobacterial

This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of complications, especially musculoskeletal symptoms, after sporadic Campylobacter jejuni enteritis of domestic origin in Finland. This multi-centre cross-sectional study was conducted during a seasonal peak in 2002. Questionnaires were sent to Campylobacter-positive patients, representing different geographical areas, 2 months after collection of positive stool samples. Medical records were viewed in several cases. Besides antimicrobial susceptibility testing C. jejuni isolates were serotyped. A total of 235 patients (58%) returned the questionn

Campylobacter jejuni is the most common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide, with contaminated chicken meat considered to represent a major source of human infection. Biosecurity measures can reduce C. jejuni shedding rates of housed chickens, but the increasing popularity of free-range and organic meat raises the question of whether the welfare benefits of extensive production are compatible with food safety. The widespread assumption that the free-range environment contaminates extensively reared chickens has not been rigorously tested. A year-long survey of 64 free-range broiler fl

OBJECTIVE: To study the occurrence and the clinical picture of musculoskeletal (MSK) complications including reactive arthritis (ReA) following an outbreak of Campylobacter jejuni.
METHODS: An outbreak of C. jejuni infection occurred in 2000 in Asikkala, Finland, during which 350 exposed subjects contacted the Municipal Health Centre (MHC). All primary care physicians in the MHC were advised to refer patients with acute MSK complications to the Rheumatism Foundation Hospital (RFH) for a specialist clinical examination, which was performed <or= 3 months after the onset of the outbreak.
