Virulence profiling of Campylobacter spp., C. jejuni and C. fetus subsp. fetus abortions rise in sheep farms in Kashmir, India.

Campylobacter spp. are the leading causes of ovine abortions leading to severe economic losses and a source of bacterial food borne illness in humans, posing a major public health concern. This study reports an increase in Brucella negative abortions in sheep farms in Kashmir, India in the last few years. Screening of sheep farms was carried to rule out Campylobacter abortion. Three Government sheep breeding farms in the Kashmir valley and some other private flocks were screened for the presence of C. jejuni and C. fetus subsp. fetus. A total of 217 samples comprising of 200 swabs (rectal and

Successful treatment of peritonitis associated with Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus in peritoneal dialysis patients: a case report and literature review.

Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus was identified in the peritoneal dialysate of a 42-year-old patient undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). The patient initially received intraperitoneal ceftazidime and cefazolin sodium for 10 days, which led to significant symptom relief. However, bacterial cultures of the peritoneal dialysate remained positive. Further history revealed that the patient frequently dined at her father’s home, where turtles were kept, suggesting that turtle feces might be the source of infection. Subsequently, the treatment regimen was changed to oral

Campylobacter fetus Bacteremia Presenting with Bilateral Lower Leg Cellulitis in an Immunocompetent Adult.

Campylobacter fetus is a species of the Campylobacter genus that often causes bacteremia in immunocompromised patients. Although cellulitis due to C. fetus has been previously described, bilateral involvement is rare. We herein report the case of an 87-year-old woman without immunodeficiency, who presented with fever and bilateral leg pain. An examination showed inflammatory changes in both lower legs, and blood cultures showed the growth of C. fetus. Antimicrobial therapy was initiated with meropenem, de-escalated to ampicillin, and then switched to oral amoxicillin, which resulted in a clini

Characterization of Campylobacter fetus adherence, invasiveness, and ultrastructural damage on bovine oviductal cells.

Bovine campylobacteriosis is a distributed worldwide disease caused by Campylobacter fetus. It is a sexual transmitted disease that affects reproductive health in cattle. The objective of this study was to use bovine oviduct primary cell cultures as a pathogenicity model to study the virulence of Campylobacter fetus fetus and Campylobacter fetus venerealis. Both subspecies showed the ability to adhere to, invade and cause cytopathogenic effect in oviductal cells. Transmission electron microscopy revealed significant ultrastructural damage, including cytoplasmic vacuolization, nuclear condensat

Tubo-ovarian abscess with endometrial cyst probably infected by Campylobacter fetus: Two cases.

Campylobacter fetus often causes systemic infection in immunocompromised or older patients, and prenatal infection, but Campylobacter has rarely been reported as a cause of adnexitis in healthy young women. Here we report two cases of endometriotic cysts infected by C. fetus for the first time. In case 1, a 28-year-old woman with a left adnexal cyst was hospitalized for left tubo-ovarian abscess and underwent left salpingo-oophorectomy. In case 2, a 22-year-old woman with a right adnexal cyst was hospitalized for a bilateral tubo-ovarian abscess and underwent right salpingo-oophorectomy and le

[Bacteremia due to Campylobacter fetus isolated by conventional methods from an immunocompromised patient].

The genus Campylobacter includes gram-negative, motile, curved rods that can evidence characteristic morphologies. These microorganisms require low oxygen tension and an increased level of CO2 for growing. A case of bacteremia due to Campylobacter fetus in a patient with a previous diagnosis of breast cancer with metastases in dorso-lumbar column and acute promyelocytic leukemia (FAB-M3 variant) is presented. The patient was admitted to our institution due to loss of consciousness and a 2 day--history of bloody diarrhea. She received successive blood transfusions on account of her pancytopenia

A case of chronic Campylobacter fetus infection-related glomerulonephritis, mimicking systemic autoimmune diseases.

Herein, we present the first case of chronic Campylobacter fetus infection-related glomerulonephritis (IRGN) in a 69-year-old man with a permanent cardiac pacemaker. The patient had a prior episode of fever and glomerulonephritis of undetermined etiology, and at that time, low-dose steroid therapy resulted in improved urinary findings and kidney function. This time the patient again developed deterioration of kidney function with microhematuria, proteinuria, high serum C-reactive protein levels, and positive titers of anti-double-stranded DNA antibody and proteinase 3 anti-neutrophil cytoplasm

Histopathological, immunohistochemical, lectinhistochemical and molecular findings in spontaneous bovine abortions by Campylobacter fetus.

Bovine campylobacteriosis (BC) is a venereal disease caused by Campylobacter fetus characterized by temporary infertility with mild endometritis, early embryonic death and occasional abortions. The objectives of this study were to describe and identify C. fetus in spontaneous bovine abortion on the basis of histopathological, immunohistochemical, lectinhistochemical and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques. The most frequent foetal lesion was neutrophilic bronchopneumonia and interstitial pneumonia. Other commonly observed lesions included non-suppurative interstitial enteritis, hepatiti

Discovery of insertion element ISCfe1: a new tool for Campylobacter fetus subspecies differentiation.

The species Campylobacter fetus is divided into the subspecies C. fetus subsp. venerealis (CFV) and C. fetus subsp. fetus (CFF). CFV is the causative agent of bovine genital campylobacteriosis, a highly contagious venereal disease that may lead to serious reproductive problems, including sterility and abortion. In contrast, CFF can be isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of a wide range of host species, is associated with abortion in sheep and cattle, and can also be isolated from local and systemic infections in humans. Despite differences in host and niche preferences, microbiological di

Effect of Campylobacter fetus on in vitro fertilization and embryonic development of preimplantation bovine embryos.

Campylobacter fetus is an important veterinary pathogen that causes campylobacteriosis. This disease causes decreased productivity of cattle by inducing reproductive losses. Although several virulence factors have been recognized in C. fetus, including a cytolethal distending toxin (CDT), the exact mechanism responsible for embryonic death remains unknown. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of C. fetus subsp. fetus (Cff) and C. fetus subsp. venerealis (Cfv), and their toxin activity on the in vitro fertilization of bovine ova and early embryonic development. Two different experime

Comparative pangenomic analysis of Campylobacter fetus isolated from Spanish bulls and other mammalian species.

Campylobacter fetus comprises two closely related mammal-associated subspecies: Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus (Cff) and Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis (Cfv). The latter causes bovine genital campylobacteriosis, a sexually-transmitted disease endemic in Spain that results in significant economic losses in the cattle industry. Here, 33 C. fetus Spanish isolates were whole-genome sequenced and compared with 62 publicly available C. fetus genomes from other countries. Genome-based taxonomic identification revealed high concordance with in silico PCR, confirming Spanish isolates as Cff (n

First Case Report of Mycotic Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Caused by Campylobacter fetus in Serbia.

BACKGROUND: Due to its distinct vascular tropism, Campylobacter fetus is recognized as a significant cause of severe systemic infections, especially in immunocompromised individuals, while it is rarely reported as a cause of gastrointestinal infections. METHODS: A rare case of mycotic abdominal aortic aneurysm associated with Campylobacter fetus detected on the aneurysm wall itself was described. RESULTS: A 68-year-old male was admitted to the hospital due to severe abdominal pain. The patient was afebrile, hemodynamically stable with elevated C-reactive protein levels. A physical examinatio

Mycotic abdominal aortic aneurysm caused by Campylobacter fetus: a case report and literature review.

Campylobacter spp. usually cause gastrointestinal infections, but among them, Campylobacter fetus is a well-known organism causing mycotic abdominal aortic aneurysm (MAAA), which requires proper surgical intervention and antibiotic therapy. We report a 65-year-old man who was successfully treated by an in situ operation using a rifampicin (RFP)-bonded J-Graft for C. fetus-induced MAAA. We performed a review of the English literature on MAAA caused by C. fetus and summarized the results of the cases (28 cases). All but 2 of the patients (92.9%) were men. Blood culture and arterial wall culture

Successful Empiric Therapy for Postsplenectomy Sepsis with Campylobacter fetus in an Abattoir Worker with Follicular Lymphoma.

Asplenia may yield an increased risk of fulminant sepsis with various pathogens. Human infection with Campylobacter fetus is rare, but it often presents with non-gastrointestinal tract infection among immunocompromised individuals. A 55-year-old abattoir worker presented with a fever. He had had splenectomy for follicular lymphoma and rituximab maintenance therapy by four months before the presentation. Blood cultures yielded C. fetus, and the administration of meropenem dissolved the bacteremia. Further maintenance therapy was withheld, and no recurrence of infection has been observed for sev
