A risk factor for thyroid cancer (TC) may be a history of former cancer and cancer therapy. The precise risk of a second primary thyroid carcinoma has not yet been revealed. In this study, we evaluated standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) of second primary thyroid cancer (SPTC) with consideration of different conditions and further analyzed the clinicopathological characteristics and survival of these patients. The cohort was selected from the US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program between 1975 and 2019. The standardized incidence ratios, morbidity risk, clinicopathologi

PURPOSE: Epidemiological evidence on the risk factors for uterine/endometrial cancer in breast cancer (BCa) survivors is limited and inconsistent. Therefore, we critically reviewed and summarized available evidence related to the risk factors for uterine/endometrial cancer in BCa survivors.
METHODS: We conducted a literature search through PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection/Cited Reference Search, as well as through manual searches of the bibliographies of the articles identified in electronic searches. We included in this review studies that were published up to November 30, 2018 that we

OBJECTIVES: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) has not been widely explored in survivors of childhood cancer. Yet, childhood survivors are at risk of experiencing late effects and may be especially vulnerable. The aims of the current study were to conduct a retrospective chart review to determine the prevalence and persistence of FCR among survivors of childhood cancer and to examine factors that may be related to FCR.
METHODS: Survivors of childhood cancer (n = 228, mean attained age = 14.5 years [range = 4.7-21 years]; mean diagnosis age = 4.4 years [range = 0-16.5 years]; mean time off treatm

The occurrence of cancer among the 1,348 offspring of 2,441 survivors of childhood cancer, treated before 1978, was investigated. Information was obtained through a questionnaire sent to the general practitioners of these survivors. Twenty-three of 52 offspring born to survivors of heritable retinoblastoma developed retinoblastoma; the heritable form of retinoblastoma is known to be transmitted to offspring as an autosomal dominant. None of the 94 offspring born to the 54 survivors of unilateral retinoblastoma with no family history of the disease have developed the disease. This implies that

Mortality after diagnosis of colorectal subsequent malignant neoplasms (CRC-SMN) among childhood cancer survivors is understudied. Using data from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS) and the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program, we compared all-cause mortality of survivors with CRC-SMN with survivors without CRC-SMN and CRC patients in the general population without a childhood cancer history. Among 25 656 childhood cancer survivors, 96 developed CRC-SMN, with 50% diagnosed before age 40 years and 19% before age 30 years. Of those diagnosed before age 40 years, 35%

Fatigue has been the most distressing and frequent symptom in breast cancer (BC) survivors after treatment. Although fatigue can occur in other cancer survivors, women with a history of BC might share some distinctive features. The present study aimed to recapitulate the knowledge about risk factors and correlates of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in BC survivors after oncologic therapy. An electronic data search was conducted in PubMed using the terms "fatigue," "breast," "cancer," and "survivors." Records were included if they were original articles, available in English, had used a quantitati

PURPOSE: Primary hypothyroidism is common in childhood cancer survivors (CCS). Exposure to radiation and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are known risk factors; however, the impact of chemotherapy and the role of thyroid peroxidase antibodies (anti-TPO) remain unclear. The prevalence of primary hypothyroidism, anti-TPO, and treatment-related risk factors in a cohort of CCS was assessed.
METHODS: In total, 1774 five-year CCS were included. The prevalence of primary hypothyroidism according to treatment strategy was evaluated: radiotherapy involving the thyroid gland (±chemothera

BACKGROUND: There is limited research on screening rates among uninsured cancer survivors. Uninsured cancer survivors are at higher risk of poorer health outcomes than the insured due to limited access to preventative screening for secondary cancers. This study examines the rates of surveillance and screening of uninsured cancer survivors and compares to uninsured patients without a cancer history seen in free clinics.
METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively from electronic medical records and paper charts of patients from 10 free clinics between January 2016 and December 2018 in the Tam

BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors may continue to experience psychosocial and physical needs related to their cancer experience for many years after treatment. The specification of these needs across cancer types and by survivor characteristics may lead to better prevention approaches and clinical responses. Mixed methods were used to examine responses to an open-ended question about current unmet needs from a survey of 2-, 5-, and 10-year cancer survivors.
METHODS: Qualitative techniques were used to code themes of unmet needs from open-ended responses. These themes were then examined with quanti

With therapeutic successes and improved survival after a cancer diagnosis in childhood, increasing numbers of cancer survivors are at risk of subsequent treatment-related morbidities, including cataracts. While it is well known that the lens of the eye is one of the most radiosensitive tissues in the human body, the risks associated with radiation doses less than 2 Gy are less understood, as are the long- and short-term cataract risks from exposure to ionizing radiation at a young age. In this study, we followed 13,902 five-year survivors of childhood cancer in the Childhood Cancer Survivor St

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of male infertility and treatment-related risk factors in childhood cancer survivors.
METHODS: Within the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, 1,622 survivors and 274 siblings completed the Male Health Questionnaire. The analysis was restricted to survivors (938/1,622; 57.8 %) and siblings (174/274; 63.5 %) who tried to become pregnant. Relative risks (RR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for the prevalence of self-reported infertility were calculated using generalized linear models for demographic variables and treatment-related f

BACKGROUND: We wanted to determine the type of outpatient medical care reported by young adult survivors of childhood cancer and to examine factors associated with limited medical care.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 9,434 adult childhood cancer survivors enrolled in a retrospective cohort study who completed a baseline questionnaire. They had a mean age of 26.8 years (range 18 to 48 years), 47% were female, 12% were minorities, and 16% were uninsured. Four self-reported outcome measures were used to determine outpatient medical care in a 2-year period: general contact with the health care sy

INTRODUCTION: Many childhood cancer survivors are at risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke. The North American Children's Oncology Group long-term follow-up guidelines recommend carotid ultrasound in cancer survivors 10 years after neck radiation therapy (RT) ≥40 Gy. The use of carotid ultrasound in this population has not been described.
METHODS: Survivors of childhood cancer diagnosed 1970-1999 (N = 8693) and siblings (N = 1989) enrolled in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study were asked if they had ever had a carotid ultrasound. Prevalence of carotid ultrasound was evaluated. Prevalenc

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors have a sixfold increased risk of developing subsequent neoplasms when compared to the general population. We sought to describe the occurrence of melanoma as a subsequent neoplasm among adult survivors of childhood cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Among 14,358 5-year survivors of childhood cancer diagnosed between 1970 and 1986, we calculated the cumulative incidence, standardized incidence ratio (SIR), and absolute excess risk (AER) of subsequent melanoma. Potential risk factors were assessed using a cause-specific hazards model.
RESULTS: Fifty-seven mela
