Bio-Polyethylene Composites Based on Sugar Cane and Curauá Fiber: An Experimental Study.

For the purpose of renewable materials applications, Curauá fiber treated with 5% sodium hydroxide was added to high-density biopolyethylene, using an entirely Brazilian raw material of sugarcane ethanol. Polyethylene grafted with maleic anhydride was used as a compatibilizer. With the addition of curauá fiber, the crystallinity was reduced, possibly due to interactions in the crystalline matrix. A positive thermal resistance effect was observed for the maximum degradation temperatures of the biocomposites. When curauá fiber was added (5% by weight), the morphology showed interfacial adhesion,

Successful treatment of "candy cane" syndrome through endoscopic gastrojejunal anastomosis revision.

Candy cane syndrome is an underappreciated complication reported in bariatric patients following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. It results from an excessively long blind afferent Roux limb at the gastrojejunostomy that can lead to food accumulation. Patients often present with nausea, vomiting, food intolerance, acid reflux, and abdominal pain. Many patients remain undiagnosed due to vague gastrointestinal symptoms, delayed presentation, and physician unawareness. Here, we present the case of a 40-year-old female who presented for a third opinion on the cause of intractable acid reflux and nausea.

Revision of a Previous Capella Bypass due to dysphagia, GERD and Candy Cane Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Capella ringed gastric bypass is a technical variant of gastric bypass which seeks to improve long-term outcomes with a greater restriction. Frequent complications are due to the band, due to its inclusion or slippage, without being able to reject others. Our purpose is to present the video of a revisional bariatric surgery made by laparoscopic approach in a patient with a previous open retrogastric retrocolic Capella gastric bypass. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patient presents dysphagia, gastroesophagic reflux disease (GERD), and pain, with a BMI of 36 kg/m2. Her supplementary tes

Candy Cane Compared With Boot Stirrups in Vaginal Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate differences in physical function at 6 weeks after vaginal surgery among women positioned in candy cane and boot stirrups. METHODS: We conducted a single-masked, randomized controlled trial of women undergoing vaginal surgery with either candy cane or boot stirrup use. The primary outcome was a change in the PROMIS (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System) physical function short form-20a from baseline to 6 weeks after surgery. To achieve 80% power to detect a moderate Cohen effect (d=0.5), we required 64 participants in each group. RESULTS: From March

The structure of the penis with the associated baculum in the male greater cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus).

In this study, the structures of penises of eight sexually mature male greater cane rats were examined at both macroscopic and histological levels. Each animal was sacrificed after anaesthesia with ether and then dissected open with the penis exposed from its root. The penises were first grossly examined, measured, and then prepared for histological examination. From this study it was observed that the body size has no allometry with penile size, but the testicular weight correlated with Os penis length in the greater cane rat. Grossly, the penis which was whitish in colour, with a mean length

Spontaneous neoplasms in captive African cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus Temminck, 1827).

Despite the increasing importance of cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus) farming in Africa, diseases of these animals in captivity are not well known. A survey of a colony in Gabon averaging 235 cane rats over a period of 36 months allowed the observation of several suspected tumors and the confirmation of three cases of neoplasms. Within a period of 8 months, a chondroma in an adult female, a hemangiosarcoma in a subadult male, and a chondrosarcoma in an elderly female were diagnosed. This incidence (1.3%) of neoplasms in the cane rat colony in such a short period is uncommon. Neoplasms in rod

Postures and repetitive movements during use of a long cane by individuals with visual impairment.

STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive. OBJECTIVE: To describe upper body postures and movements that occur when an individual with visual impairment uses a cane to explore the environment while walking. BACKGROUND: Previous research revealed self-reported neuromusculoskeletal problems related to cane use in individuals with visual impairments. No research, however, is available correlating neuromusculoskeletal problems with specific strategies of cane use or describing what movements and postures actually occur during cane use. METHODS AND MEASURES: Twenty-eight individuals with visual impairment who h

Variability-based assessment of assisted gait using a multi-sensor instrumented cane.

The biomechanics of walking with assistive canes are not well understood clinically, despite their long history. Canes are also often misused or not used at all once taken home, despite the known benefits of proper use. To help clinicians and users evaluate and monitor cane use at home and in the community, a multi-sensor instrumented cane and interpretable gait performance metrics have been proposed. This study investigated the effects of an instrumented cane on gait speed, stride interval, and gait variability in 15 healthy individuals. Participants were asked to walk for 10 min under three

Asymptomatic and submicroscopic malaria infections in sugar cane and rice development areas of Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Water resource development projects, such as dams and irrigation schemes, have a positive impact on food security and poverty reduction. However, such projects could increase prevalence of vector borne disease, such as malaria. This study investigate the impact of different agroecosystems and prevalence of malaria infection in Southwest Ethiopia. METHODS: Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted in the dry and wet seasons in irrigated and non-irrigated clusters of Arjo sugarcane and Gambella rice development areas of Ethiopia in 2019. A total of 4464 and 2176 study participants

Effects of cane use on the kinematic and kinetic of lower-extremity joints in inexperienced users.

The cane is commonly prescribed for the elderly to maintain balance and enhance independent mobility. However, improper use of cane can increase the risk of falling. Understanding the characteristics of cane gait is critical for better establishing proper cane usage norms. The paper aimed to investigate effects of cane use on kinematics and kinetics of lower extremities in the elderly and the young to guide the development of adaptive cane gait. Twenty participants (10 elder and 10 young) were recruited and walked at a self-comfortable speed or with a cane in a two-point gait. The spatiotempor

Effects of using cane and vestibular rehabilitation on the walking function in elderly patients with dizziness.

OBJECTIVE: Adults over the age of 65 years with balance disorders are at about twice the risk of falls, compared with those without balance disorders. Falls contribute to about 74% of the proximal femoral fractures commonly seen in the elderly. Since balance disorders are more prevalent in older adults than in younger adults, it is important to deal with balance disorders in older adults to prevent falls and the resulting deterioration in their ADL (activity of daily living). In this study, we investigated the effects of vestibular rehabilitation (VR) and cane use on improving gait and balance

Spinal arthritis in invasive cane toads is linked to rate of dispersal as well as to latitude.

Initial research on the spread of cane toads (Rhinella marina) through tropical Australia reported a high incidence of spinal arthritis (spondylosis) in toads at the invasion front (where toads disperse rapidly), but not in areas colonized earlier (where toads are more sedentary). The idea that spondylosis was a cost of rapid dispersal was challenged by wider spatial sampling which linked rates of spondylosis to hot (tropical) climates rather than to dispersal rates. Here, the authors of these competing interpretations collaborate to reinterpret the data. Our reanalysis supports both previous

An unconventional valvuloplasty: severe pulmonary stenosis with 'candy cane' inferior vena cava.

Femoral vein is the usual approach to balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty (BPV). However, alternative access may be mandated in some peculiar situations. We hereby report a 10-year-old patient with symptomatic severe valvular pulmonary stenosis with interrupted inferior vena cava which was successfully treated with transjugular BPV. Technical considerations for this approach as well as other possible options for such patients are discussed.

The Acceptability of Caning Children in Singapore: The Fine Line Between Discipline and Physical Maltreatment.

Child maltreatment is a worldwide phenomenon with far-reaching negative consequences, and physical abuse is its most visible and widely reported form of maltreatment. There is a fine line between nonabusive physical punishment and physical child abuse, and where this line is drawn is often influenced by prevailing cultural practices and child-rearing beliefs. This article focus on Singapore-a modern Asian society that remains rooted in traditional attitudes and practices-as a case study in exploring the boundaries. In particular, the local practice of caning (hitting with a rattan cane) as a d
