[Capnocytophaga spp. peritonitis in a peritoneal dialysis: A case report].

INTRODUCTION: Capnocytophaga spp. is a slow-growing bacterium that forms a part of the normal oral flora of dogs and cats. In peritoneal dialysis, only seven cases have been reported. We report the observation of a case of peritonitis with Capnocytophaga spp. in a patient on peritoneal dialysis who lives with a cat. CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old woman with chronic end stage renal disease due to chronic interstitial nephropathy on automated peritoneal dialysis has been admitted for diffuse abdominal pain. The dialysis fluid was cloudy with 11,250 elements/mm3, of leukocytes. Direct examination wa

Capnocytophaga canimorsus Meningitis: Three Cases and a Review of the Literature.

Bacterial meningitis is a disease with a high morbidity and mortality. It may be caused by the zoonotic pathogen Capnocytophaga canimorsus, which is part of the commensal oral flora in dogs and cats. We report three cases of C. canimorsus meningitis in a nationwide cohort study of bacterial meningitis patients and performed a review of the literature. Three episodes of C. canimorsus meningitis were identified in three patients included in a nationwide cohort study from 2006 through 2014. The calculated annual incidence was 0.03 per million adults. When combined with the literature, 33 patients

Capnocytophaga gingivalis Bacteremia After Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Immunocompromised Patient.

Odontogenic bacteremia, most commonly involving gram-positive oral flora, can result from daily self-care practices or professional dental procedures. Though usually transient and quickly cleared by the immune system, the presence of periodontal disease increases the frequency of exposure and risk of persistence of oral-systemic infections. Comorbidities such as asplenia, alcoholism, and immunocompromise increase the risk of complications of hematogenous spread and severe systemic illness. Capnocytophaga is a genus of anaerobic fastidious gram-negative bacilli, which is a common member of huma

Septic shock caused by Capnocytophaga canis after a cat scratch.

Capnocytophaga canis is an uncommon cause of septic shock. Only three cases have been previously reported in the literature. In this article, we describe the case of a 70-year-old male admitted to the intensive care unit for septic shock of unknown origin. On day 2, one anaerobic bottle out of the two sets taken at admission turned positive with Gram-negative bacilli. The pathogen was identified by 16S rRNA gene as C. canis. The strain was characterized and compared with other clinical isolates of Capnocytophaga spp.

Capnocytophaga Induced Acute Necrotizing and Exudative Pericarditis with Abscess Formation.

We present the case of a 55-year-old gentleman, with bilateral pulmonary embolism and a large pericardial effusion that lead to a pericardial window with evacuation of creamy pus. Gram stains were negative, with culture growing Capnocytophaga. Pathology revealed acute necrotizing and exudative changes, including frank abscess formation. In developed countries, pericardial abscess and acute pericarditis are uncommon due to availability of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Pericardial abscess due to Capnocytophaga is even more uncommon.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus endocarditis following a dog lick - a case report.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a fastidious Gram-negative bacterium found in the mouths of dogs and cats. It is a rare cause of infective endocarditis, when it is often associated with dog bites. We present a case of C. canimorsus infective endocarditis complicated by aortic regurgitation and root abscess in a patient with a history of previous infective endocarditis. The patient underwent redo aortic valve surgery with aortic valve replacement. Blood cultures and 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid gene amplification and sequencing from the excised valve tissue confirmed C. canimorsus as the cause.

Renal abscess with Capnocytophaga canimorsus infection from a dog bite.

We present a case of renal abscess caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus infection in a previously healthy middle-aged man. He presented with sepsis and an acute kidney injury, and although not identified on his initial assessment, he had sustained a dog bite 5 days prior to hospital admission. The patient developed left loin pain and imaging investigation revealed a renal abscess. Gram stain showed a gram-negative bacillus and C. canimorsus was identified by 16S PCR from these samples along with aspirate from the abscess. The patient responded to treatment with carbapenems but required a prolon

[Capnocytophaga canimorsus infections: a possibly fatal complication of bite wounds].

Practising veterinarians and their assistants run the risk of being bitten by their patients, mostly cats and dogs, and many have experienced that bites and bite-wound infections can have unpleasant consequences. In recent years, more insight has been gained into a 'new' bacterial infection of bite wounds that not only has severe local effects but also potentially fatal systemic consequences. The bacterium involved is Capnocytophaga canimorsus. All bite wounds should be treated adequately, but this is especially so when wounds are infected with C. canimorsus. In this article, dog and cat bites

First report of a Bartholin's gland abscess caused by Capnocytophaga ochracea.

Capnocytophaga species are facultative anaerobic, capnophilic, slow-growing, Gram-negative bacilli that typically form part of the oral microbiota. However, their role in urogenital infections is poorly understood. We report the first case of a Bartholin's gland abscess caused by Capnocytophaga ochracea in a 48-year-old immunocompetent woman. Identification was achieved by MALDI-TOF MS and confirmed by 16 S rRNA sequencing. The patient recovered fully after surgical drainage without additional antimicrobial therapy. This case expands the clinical spectrum of Capnocytophaga infections and raise

[Capnocytophaga canimorsus meningitis: no, the dog is not always man's best friend!].

Capnocytophaga canimorsus meningitis are rare invasive infection with unpredictable outcomes. Therefore, rapid diagnosis and treatment are crucial. Here, we describe a case with an initially falsely reassuring clinical presentation. Lumbar puncture reveals purulent and inflammatory cerebrospinal fluid, but the syndromic multiplex PCR remains negative. The challenging microbiological diagnosis resulted from a meticulous examination of the CSF and the performance of a 16S rRNA PCR followed by sequencing. A thorough medical history, including close contact with dogs and identification of immunosu

Capnocytophaga canimorsus: meningitis and Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome in an immunocompetent patient.

Diagnosing sudden, unexplained death in healthy individuals is challenging. This case report details a rare case of fatal Waterhouse-Friderichsen Syndrome (WFS) in a previously healthy 27-year-old man. Post-mortem examination revealed vomit stains, widespread purpura, and haemorrhagic adrenal glands. Microbiological analysis confirmed a systemic infection with Capnocytophaga canimorsus. While C. canimorsus infections are uncommon, their association with WFS is exceedingly rare. To our knowledge, this is the first documented case of fatal C. canimorsus sepsis causing WFS in an immunocompetent p

Unique Presentation of a Ubiquitous Organism: Capnocytophaga canimorsus Meningitis With Pneumocephalus.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a bacterium commonly found in the oral cavities of cats and dogs. Infections are particularly common in immunocompromised patients who have been exposed to bites or come in contact with saliva from these animals. The manifestations of infection include bacteremia, fever, and, rarely, meningitis. Diagnosis is challenging given the bacteria has slow growth on culture media. The organism is susceptible to beta-lactam antibiotics, with higher-generation cephalosporins recommended for treating meningitis. We present a case of a 74-year-old woman with altered mental stat

Capnocytophaga Meningitis: A Rare Case of Bacterial Infection With Neurological Manifestation.

We discuss a case of meningitis caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus (C. canimorsus) infection in a previously healthy elderly male who presented with altered mental status and new-onset seizures requiring intensive care. An open wound had served as an entry point for the infectious organism. After 25 days of treatment with meropenem, he recovered with persistent functional limitations and was discharged. We also engage in a review of the relevant literature and highlight the importance of identifying animal exposure in patients with meningitis.

A case of septic arthritis caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus in an HIV patient.

Invasive infections caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus , a Gram-negative rod found in the oral cavity of healthy dogs and cats, are rare but they are increasing worldwide. We report a case of septic arthritis in a native knee joint due to this micro-organism. A 57-year-old man, with a well-controlled chronic HIV infection, attended the Emergency Department because of left knee pain and shivering without measured fever. A knee arthrocentesis and a computed tomography scan were performed, revealing septic arthritis with collections in the left leg posterior musculature. He was admitted to the I

Septic Shock Due to Capnocytophaga canimorsus Infection in a Splenectomized Patient.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a gram-negative rod that is part of the commensal flora of dogs' mouths. Among splenectomized patients who maintain close contact with dogs, the bacteria can lead to infection and fulminant sepsis even without evidence of a skin breach. In this report, we describe the case of a 71-year-old woman who had undergone splenectomy 35 years ago. She came to our emergency department complaining of back pain, myalgia, asthenia, and a fever of 40.2ºC. No other symptoms were noted upon her admission. Blood workup revealed hyperlacticaemia, increased C-reactive protein, and ly
