Dietary supplementation with rumen-protected capsicum during the transition period improves the metabolic status of dairy cows.

In ruminants, it has been observed that capsicum oleoresin can alter insulin responses and that high-intensity artificial sweetener can increase glucose absorption from the small intestine. Because glucose metabolism and insulin responses are critical during early lactation, these supplements might have an effect on the metabolic status of dairy cows during the transition period. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of rumen-protected capsicum oleoresin fed alone or in combination with artificial sweetener during the transition period on lactational performance and susc

Oxidative and molecular responses in Capsicum annuum L. after hydrogen peroxide, salicylic acid and chitosan foliar applications.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an important ROS molecule (Reactive oxygen species) that serves as a signal of oxidative stress and activation of signaling cascades as a result of the early response of the plant to biotic stress. This response can also be generated with the application of elicitors, stable molecules that induce the activation of transduction cascades and hormonal pathways, which trigger induced resistance to environmental stress. In this work, we evaluated the endogenous H2O2 production caused by salicylic acid (SA), chitosan (QN), and H2O2 elicitors in Capsicum annuum L. Hydrogen

Patterns of base chromosome numbers, genome size and rDNA loci evolution in the genus Capsicum (Solanaceae).

The size, organization and dynamics of the evolution of plant genomes vary widely among and within evolutionary lineages. The relatively small genus Capsicum provides an excellent system for studying genome evolution because all the species are diploid and possess one of two base chromosome numbers (x = 12 or 13). Here, we report chromosome numbers, genome sizes, and numbers of 5S and 35S rDNA loci for 24 Capsicum taxa representing eight of the nine currently recognized clades and one outgroup species, Lycianthes rantonnetii. The size of the analyzed genomes ranged from 1.66 to 7.79 pg/1C (app

Investigation of cold stress tolerance in seedlings of pepper (Capsicum annuum) following application of meta-topolin.

This study investigated the anatomical and physiological effects of exogenous meta-topolin (mT) at different concentrations (0, 0.25, 0.50 mM) on the leaves of cold-susceptible cultivar Kahramanmaraş-1 (KM-1) and cold-tolerant cultivar Çoban F1 (ÇF1) of pepper (Capsicum annuum) before cold stress (4°C). Leaf thickness of ÇF1 was higher than KM-1 at optimum (25°C) and low temperatures. Long-term cold stress reduced stomatal density while increasing leaf thickness in KM-1. At 48 and 60 h of stress, both cultivars showed increased malondialdehyde (MDA) and ion leakage, while FW, actual water cont

QTL mapping and identification of linked markers for anthracnose fruit rot resistance in Capsicum baccatum L.

Anthracnose fruit rot caused by Colletotrichum truncatum is a major constraint in Chilli production, leading to heavy pre- and post-harvest losses. Developing resistant cultivars through marker-assisted breeding is the most sustainable management strategy. Identification of molecular markers tightly linked to anthracnose fruit rot resistance loci in Capsicum baccatum accessions will be of great use in chili crop improvement programs to introgress resistance loci into elite backgrounds. Inheritance studies in an F₂ population (IIHR 4491 × PBC81) indicated inhibitory gene action (13S:3R) governi

Cloning and functional analysis of qCmr2.1, a novel gene for Cucumber mosaic virus resistance in Capsicum frutescens.

A novel TIR -NB -LRR class CMV resistance gene qCmr2.1 was cloned from C. frutescens cv. PBC688, and its essential role in conferring CMV resistance was validated via VIGS silencing, heterologous overexpression, and near-isogenic line assays. The core mechanism of qCmr2.1-mediated CMV-Fny resistance in pepper relies on the SA signaling pathway. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) poses a significant threat to pepper production worldwide, underscoring the need for resistant cultivars. Although disease resistance genes can expedite breeding, no CMV resistance gene had been cloned from pepper, leaving it

Capsicum--production, technology, chemistry, and quality. Part III. Chemistry of the color, aroma, and pungency stimuli.

The spice capsicum, the fruits of the genus Capsicum (Family Solanaceae), is a very popular food additive in many parts of the world, valued for the important sensory attributes of color, pungency, and aroma. A large number of varieties are widely cultivated and traded. The characteristic carotenoids of the bright red paprika and cayenne-type chillies, the high character impact aroma stimuli, the methoxy pyrazine of green bell capsicum, the esters of ripe tabasco and the highly potent pungency stimuli, and the capsaicinoids of African and other Asian varieties of chillies, have been of great i

The CaALAD Gene From Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) Confers Chilling Stress Tolerance in Transgenic Arabidopsis Plants.

The ALAD gene encodes an enzyme that is essential for chlorophyll biosynthesis and is involved in many other physiological processes in plants. In this study, the CaALAD gene was cloned from pepper and sequenced. Multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis of ALAD proteins from nine plant species showed that ALAD is highly conserved, and that CaALAD shows the highest homology with the ALAD protein from eggplant. Subcellular localization indicated that the CaALAD protein is mainly localized to the chloroplasts. After transferring CaALAD into the Arabidopsis thaliana genome, cold toler

Inhibition of NADP-malic enzyme activity by H2 S and NO in sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) fruits.

NADPH is an essential cofactor in many physiological processes. Fruit ripening is caused by multiple biochemical pathways in which, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) metabolism is involved. Previous studies have demonstrated the differential modulation of nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) content during sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) fruit ripening, both of which regulate NADP-isocitrate dehydrogenase activity. To gain a deeper understanding of the potential functions of other NADPH-generating components, we analyzed glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and 6-p

Comparative Profiling of Capsicum frutescens and C. annuum Reveals Superior Bioactivities and Nutritional Advantages for Functional Food Applications.

Despite the significance and growing global interest, limited comprehensive comparative investigation has simultaneously evaluated both nutritional composition and biological activities using standardized methodologies within a single analytical framework. This fragmented approach prevents identification of species-specific advantages and limits evidence-based recommendations for functional food or pharmaceutical applications. The current comparative study evaluated nutritional composition, phytochemical constituents, and biological activities of Capsicum frutescens and Capsicum annuum fruits.

Orthotospovirus tomatomaculae (Tomato spotted wilt virus [TSWV]) infects ovules and pollen to achieve vertical transmission in Capsicum annuum.

Orthotospovirus tomatomaculae (Tomato spotted wilt virus, TSWV) is an economically important plant pathogen reported to be transmissible by seeds. However, the pathways by which the virus enters the seed remain poorly understood. Here, we characterized the distribution and vertical transmission pathways of TSWV within reproductive organs of Capsicum annuum. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed systemic distribution of TSWV throughout floral tissues, with virions detected in anthers, pollen grains, ovaries, ovules, and styles. Immunofluorescence histochemistry further revealed accum

Grafting and biodynamic nanosilica-induced physiological and transcriptomic modulation of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) under drought stress.

Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is an economically important vegetable crop cultivated worldwide. Increasing drought stress associated with climate change has severely reduced chilli productivity. Although grafting and silicon-based nanomaterials have each been investigated independently as drought mitigation strategies in Solanaceae crops, this study represents, to our knowledge, the first investigation of their combined physiological, yield, and genome-wide transcriptomic effects in chilli under experimentally validated drought stress. Biodynamic nanosilica (BNS) is an α-quartz nanoparticle prep
