Structural Analysis of Carbon Fiber 3D-Printed Ribs for Small Wind Turbine Blades.

This work provides a structural analysis of small-scale 3D-printed wind turbine ribs subjected to compression. The ribs were manufactured according to NACA 23015 and NACA 633618 geometries, with polylactic acid (PLA) and polylactic acid with carbon fiber additives (CF-PLA). In addition, holes were manufactured into the sample bodies by either 3D printing or drilling for being compared with solid samples. The compression testing was performed by following the ASTM 695D standard, whereas the beginning and propagation of delamination were assessed with the ASTM 5528 standard. Experimental results

Real-Time, Selective Detection of Copper(II) Using Ionophore-Grafted Carbon-Fiber Microelectrodes.

Rapid, selective detection of metals in complex samples remains an elusive goal that could provide critical analytical information for biological and environmental sciences and industrial waste management. Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) using carbon-fiber microelectrodes (CFMs) is an emerging technique for metal analysis with broad potential applicability because of its rapid response to changes in analyte concentration and minimal disturbance to the analysis medium. In this communication, we report the first effective application of covalently modified CFMs to achieve highly selective, s

Solid-Phase Extraction of Sulfur Mustard Metabolites Using an Activated Carbon Fiber Sorbent.

A novel solid-phase extraction method using activated carbon fiber (ACF) was developed and validated. ACF has a vast network of pores of varying sizes and microporous structures that result in rapid adsorption and selective extraction of sulfur mustard metabolites according to the pH of eluting solvents. ACF could not only selectively extract thiodiglycol and 1-methylsulfinyl-2-[2-(methylthio)-ethylsulfonyl]ethane eluting a 9:1 ratio of dichloromethane to acetone, and 1,1'-sulfonylbis[2-(methylsulfinyl)ethane] and 1,1'-sulfonylbis- [2-S-(N-acetylcysteinyl)ethane] eluting 3% hydrogen chloride i

Anterior cervical interbody fusion with radiolucent carbon fiber cages: clinical and radiological results.

The authors retrospectively evaluated 30 patients with an anterior cervical interbody fusion for cervical spondylosis or disc herniation. Open box carbon fiber cages were used at 45 levels. The visual analogue scales (VAS), respectively for neck and for arm pain, and the neck disability index (NDI) improved significantly (p < 0.001). Fusion occurred in 87% of the operated levels. Subsidence of the cages into the endplates was observed in 49% of the operated levels, which increased to 54% when more levels were fused. No correlation between subsidence of the cage and clinical outcome or radiogra

Carbon Black Nanoparticle-PP Fiber Interfacial Engineering for Piezoresistive Self-Sensing Cementitious Nanocomposites.

Carbon black (CB) nanoparticles (~20 nm) offer high specific surface area and conductivity for self-sensing cementitious composites, but strong interparticle van der Waals forces drive agglomeration in alkaline pore solutions, limiting sensing reliability. This study introduces a nanoscale interfacial engineering strategy in which CB nanoparticles are adsorbed onto polypropylene (PP) fiber surfaces as spatially organized conductive elements, with EDS evidence of enhanced hydrate coverage at the fiber-matrix interface. Three CB dosages (0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% by binder mass) with 0.5% PP fiber we

Enhancing Polymer Composite Thermal Conductivity by Liquid Metal and Carbon Fiber Dual Fillers.

Polymers, including poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), have been widely used in daily life and industries, such as in membrane filtration, food packing and heat exchanging. However, pristine polymers suffer from inherently low thermal conductivity. Herein, thermally conductive poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composites were prepared by incorporating eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) liquid metals (LMs) and carbon fibers (CFs) as dual fillers. The effects of the LMs and the CFs on the thermal and mechanical properties of the PVDF composites were characterized via thermal conductivity, morphology,

Interface-Driven Carbon Fiber Reinforcement in Graphite Packing Rings for Enhanced Service Stability.

Flexible graphite packing rings are widely employed in high-temperature and high-pressure valve sealing systems owing to their intrinsic lubricity and thermal stability, yet their service reliability is often compromised by low mechanical strength, pronounced creep, and unstable tribological behavior under extreme conditions. Here, we present an interface-engineered strategy to enhance the service performance of graphite packing rings via reinforcement with surface-functionalized PAN-based carbon fibers (PAN-CFs; carbonized fibers derived from polyacrylonitrile precursors). Through controlled

Innovative Biomechanical Design and Performance of Carbon Fiber-Thermoplastic Implants via Additive Manufacturing.

This study explores the potential of 3D-printed carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites, specifically Nylon and PEEK, as advanced materials for medical implants. Fabricated using fused filament fabrication (FFF), these implants were evaluated against conventional Ti-6AL-4V titanium alloy counterparts through a combination of experimental analysis and finite element method (FEM) simulations. The novel designs of discontinuous carbon fiber-PEEK and continuous carbon fiber-Nylon composites exhibited enhanced performance, reducing screw pull-out force by nearly 50% relative to Ti-6AL-4V.

Bending-Sensitive Optical Waveguide Sensor With Carbon-Fiber Layer for Monitoring Grip Strength.

With the gradual popularity of wearable devices, the demand for high-performance flexible wearable sensors is also increasing. Flexible sensors based on the optical principle have advantages e.g. anti-electromagnetic interference, antiperspirant, inherent electrical safety, and the potential for biocompatibility. In this study, an optical waveguide sensor integrating a carbon fiber layer, fully constraining stretching deformation, partly constraining pressing deformation, and allowing bending deformation, was proposed. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor is three times higher than that of t

Carbon fiber/microlattice 3D hybrid architecture as multi-scale scaffold for tissue engineering.

Multiscale 3D carbon architectures are of particular interest in tissue engineering applications, as these structures may allow for three-dimensional cell colonization essential for tissue growth. In this work, carbon fiber/microlattice hybrid architectures are introduced as innovative multi-scale scaffolds for tissue engineering. The microlattice provides the design freedom and structural integrity, whereas the fibrous component creates a cellular microenvironment for cell colonization. The hybrid structures are fabricated by carbonization of stereolithographically 3D printed epoxy microlatti

Total knee arthroplasty application of polyetheretherketone and carbon-fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone: A review.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and carbon-fiber-reinforced PEEK (CFR-PEEK) have been successfully used in the field of orthopedic implants. The polymers PEEK and CFR-PEEK are resistant to fatigue strain and radiologically transparent. These have mechanical properties and are therefore suitable for a range of orthopedic applications. Polymer composites have been proposed for orthopedic applications with the potential of reducing stress-shielding, weight of the implants, wear, and risk of osteolysis. They prevent the release of metal ions by replacing the metal articulating components. The purpose

Wear of ceramic-on-carbon fiber-reinforced poly-ether ether ketone hip replacements.

Total hip replacement has been a successful surgical intervention for over 50 years, with the majority of bearings using a polyethylene cup. Long-term failure due to osteolysis and loosening has been widely documented and alternative bearings have been sought. A novel carbon fiber-reinforced poly-ether ether ketone (CFR-PEEK) cup was investigated through experimental friction and wear studies. Friction studies demonstrated the bearings operated in a boundary lubrication condition, with friction factors higher than those for other hip replacement bearings. The wear study was conducted with 36 m

Paracetamol voltammetric microsensors based on electrocopolymerized-molecularly imprinted film modified carbon fiber microelectrodes.

A molecularly imprinted polymer is presented as a carbon fiber microelectrode coating for determining the presence of paracetamol. The polymeric film was obtained by electrocopolymerization of o-phenylenediamine and aniline in the presence of the template molecule, through the use of cyclic voltammetry. After removing the template, the signals of the microsensor were converted into physical ones by a voltammetric transductor using square wave voltammetry. Various parameters influencing the electropolymerization and voltammetric determination processes were examined and optimized. The response

Surface characterization of metal oxides-supported activated carbon fiber catalysts for simultaneous catalytic hydrolysis of carbonyl sulfide and carbon disulfide.

The sol-gel method was used to synthesize a series of metal oxides-supported activated carbon fiber (ACF) and the simultaneous catalytic hydrolysis activity of carbonyl sulfide (COS) and carbon disulfide (CS2) at relatively low temperatures of 60°C was tested. The effects of preparation conditions on the catalyst properties were investigated, including the kinds and amount of metal oxides and calcination temperatures. The activity tests indicated that catalysts with 5 wt.% Ni after calcining at 400°C (Ni(5)/ACF(400)) had the best performance for the simultaneous catalytic hydrolysis of COS and

Production of Carbon Fibers Using a Molten Cu-In Catalyst for Methane Pyrolysis.

Molten metal catalysts for methane pyrolysis and dry reforming are becoming recognized for their potential in decarbonization efforts. Their use in bubble column reactors facilitates continuous operation by allowing the produced carbon to float to the surface for removal. While most reported molten metals produce low-value amorphous carbon or graphitic sheets containing some metals, our study introduces a Cu-In alloy that selectively produces high-purity carbon nanofibers. These nanofibers are tubular and have a smooth or bamboo-like segmented structure with a diameter of approximately 100 nm.
