Foregone carbon sequestration dominates greenhouse gas footprint in aquaculture associated with coastal wetland conversion.

Coastal wetlands offer large carbon sequestration benefits but their conversion to aquaculture systems could result in substantial carbon losses. Here we show that the conversion of Spartina alterniflora salt marsh to mariculture ponds in China generated a greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint of 20.3 Mg CO2 equivalent per ha per year. Around two-thirds of the footprint can be attributed to foregone salt marsh GHG mitigation capacity, whereas direct carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide emissions in mariculture ponds account for only ~10%, with the remaining ~20% arising from feed, fertilizer and

Carbon footprint reduction in shoulder surgery by the rationalisation of single-use convenience packs.

INTRODUCTION: The United Kingdom National Health Service is responsible for a vast carbon footprint, with annual carbon dioxide emissions at over 25 million tonnes. Operating theatres contribute up to 25% of a hospital's emissions. AIMS: To rationalise the composition of the single-use convenience packs in arthroscopic and open shoulder surgery, to reduce the annual carbon footprint. METHODS: The individual material composition of all items in the single-use shoulder arthroscopy and open shoulder convenience packs was considered. The carbon footprint of each item was calculated by the applic

Inhaler use and their carbon footprint in Germany: a 10-year analysis (2013-2022).

BACKGROUND: Inhalers are essential for managing asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; however, their environmental effects vary significantly. Pressurised metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) contain potent greenhouse gases (GHGs), resulting in a much higher carbon footprint (CF) than non-propellant inhalers (NPIs). Consequently, reducing the use of pMDIs is seen as an important contribution to reduce the healthcare sector's effect on climate change. This study analyses inhaler dispensing trends in Germany, estimates their resulting CF and quantifies the potential GHG savings from increas

Temporal evolution of carbon footprint and emission reduction pathways of major crops in Inner mongolia under China's dual-carbon goals.

As an important grain-producing region in northern China, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is characterized by arid and semi-arid agricultural ecosystems, limited water resources, and relatively high dependence on agricultural inputs such as irrigation, chemical fertilizers, diesel fuel, and plastic film mulching. Clarifying the temporal evolution of input-related carbon footprints in crop production is important for promoting agricultural low-carbon transformation while maintaining regional food security. Based on an input-based carbon footprint accounting framework with reference to life

The global potential of aquavoltaics for power generation and offsetting the carbon footprint of freshwater aquaculture.

Global inland freshwater aquaculture has rapidly expanded, intensifying greenhouse gas emissions and sustainability challenges. Here we estimate whether aquavoltaics, integrating photovoltaics with aquaculture, could offer multifunctional benefits. We integrate satellite observation products with realistic climate-driven photovoltaic system simulations to map the global expansion patterns and installation potential of aquavoltaics. Global aquavoltaics area covered 423 km2 in 2023, with China accounting for the overwhelming majority (97%). We estimate that deploying photovoltaics with a 40% cov

Comparative carbon footprinting study of reusable vs. disposable instruments in cataract surgery.

BACKGROUND: Theatre activity is a major source of hospital waste, accounting for 21-30% of total output, and is 3-6 times more energy-intensive than any other hospital department. Cataract remains the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgical procedure worldwide, but to date has received little analysis in this field. The aim of this study was to evaluate the carbon impact of streamlining single-use packs, and transitioning from single-use items, to reusable equivalents in cataract surgery. METHODS: A focus group and prospective audit w

Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Acid Mine Drainage Neutralization Are a Major Component of Metal Mining Carbon Footprints.

Achieving the transition to net zero human greenhouse gas emissions requires a large increase in metal production by mining. Acid mine drainage (AMD) neutralization is a potentially important but poorly quantified source of mining industry CO2 emissions. Here, we show that AMD neutralization-related CO2 emissions can be a major component of metal production carbon footprints. Data from the rivers and estuarine system draining the central and eastern Iberian Pyrite Belt show that AMD neutralization emits 32 ± 11 kt CO2/yr. Normalized to historic copper production rates, AMD-associated emissions

Carbon footprint of total intravenous anaesthesia vs. inhalational sevoflurane anaesthesia in adults: a modelling study.

INTRODUCTION: The carbon footprint of propofol is less than that of sevoflurane per minimum alveolar concentration hour equivalent of drug, but there are justifiable concerns about the amount of clinical waste generated during total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA), especially in the context of shorter procedures. The aim of this study was to assess the carbon footprint of inhalational sevoflurane anaesthesia vs. TIVA with propofol and remifentanil, including all the consumables used, over the first 6 h of general anaesthesia in adult patients. METHODS: A hybrid approach was used to model 10 sc

Carbon footprint of a chemotherapy production unit within a hospital pharmacy: Time for green pharmacy.

BackgroundIn the last decade, environmental impact assessment has become a major concern for human activities, which is particularly true for health. The french healthcare sector emits approximately 49 million tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2eq) per year, approximately 8% of the total national Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. In this context, assessing the carbon footprint of a resource-consuming unit like the cytotoxic drug production unit (CPU) is essential. The study aimed to assess the carbon footprint of a CPU.MethodsA retrospective study was conducted in a french CPU producing more than 51,00
