BACKGROUND: Carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication is a leading cause of severe neuropsychological impairments. Peripheral nerve injury has rarely been reported. It consists usually in a demyelinating polyneuropathy or mononeuropathy affecting mainly the lower limbs. Isolated involvement of both upper extremities has been described in only 4 patients related to root damage. We report the first case of bilateral brachial plexus injury following CO poisoning and review all previous CO-induced neuropathy described in literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: After being unconscious for three hours, a 42 years o

A critical analysis of acute CO and CN poisonings evidences that the lone toxicological similarity between CO and CN is their ability to avidly bind iron ions in the different hemoproteins. Otherwise, CO is a stable not-metabolized molecule while CN is a highly reactive molecule with extensive metabolism. CO impairs the ability of erythrocytes to transfer oxygen while CN has no effect. Both toxicants act in the mitochondria with CN resulting in the complete and sustained blockade of cellular respiration inducing severe lactic acidosis while CO does not. Acute CO poisoning mostly alters neurolo

A case record of a 19-year old women acutely poisoned by carbon monoxide is presented. The state of the patient was very serious with loss of consciousness, cerebral oedema and acute circulatory failure, manifested by pulmonary oedema. The presence of carboxyhemoglobin in concentration of 45% was found in the blood. During the second week after the incident, extrapyramidal symptoms, manifested by hyperkinetic-hypokinetic syndrome with predominant involuntary movement, was observed. The diagnostic examinations of the central nervous system showed necrosis of globus pallidus, external capsule an

The body of a deceased woman was found in a car. The circumstances were typical for suicidal carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning by inhalation of exhaust gases, except that the vacuum cleaner hose had become detached from the exhaust. Autopsy revealed only decompositional changes. No CO or other drugs were detected. Hypoxic changes were present in the cortex and hippocampus, with an age of 2-3 days. It is consistent that this woman inhaled sufficient CO to cause coma, at which stage the hose became detached, and that she then exhaled CO over the next 2-3 days before finally dying. Delayed death fol

Diabetes insipidus was encountered in a 58-year-old woman after injury in an closed space fire. Carboxyhemoglobin measured 26% after 30 minutes of assisted ventilation with an FIO2 of 1.0. The failure of antidiuretic hormone was a sign of a diffuse cerebral insult caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. The hormonal deficit was easily corrected by exogenous vasopressin. Mortality was related to the cerebral lesion.

Carbon monoxide (CO) remains the leading cause of death due to poisoning in the United States. CO produces toxicity by binding to hemoglobin, thereby reducing oxygen-carrying capacity, and by binding to myoglobin, which may impair cardiac output and result in cerebral ischemia. Severe CO poisoning results in coma or encephalopathy, but milder intoxication may occur with nonspecific symptoms suggestive of hysteria, hyperventilation, psychosis, or viral syndrome. Survivors of severe CO poisoning may have permanent neurologic or neuropsychiatric sequelae. Subtle memory deficits or personality cha

OBJECTIVE: We report longitudinal changes in neuroimaging and neuropsychological measurements in a case of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning showing reversible changes in hippocampal volume, which was closely linked to the degree of memory impairment.
METHODS: The current study presents a female in her early 20s, with a high school level of education. She became aware of headaches and drowsiness while working in a restaurant that operated charcoal braziers, and she was urgently transported to our hospital. Her high blood carboxyhemoglobin concentration led to a diagnosis of CO poisoning, but no

Carbon monoxide (CO) can occur in numerous situations and ambient conditions, such as fire smoke, indoor fireplaces, silos containing large quantities of wood pellets, engine exhaust fumes, and when using hookahs. Symptoms of CO poisoning are nonspecific and can range from dizziness, headache, and angina pectoris to unconsciousness and death. This guideline presents the current state of knowledge and national recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with CO poisoning. The diagnosis of CO poisoning is based on clinical symptoms and proven or probable exposure to CO. Negative c

Contamination of breathing gas is a risk for all divers. Some hydrocarbon contaminants will be sensed by the diver and the dive profile aborted. On the contrary, carbon monoxide may not be recognized by the diver and catastrophic consequences can result. Reported here is the fatal case of carbon monoxide poisoning while scuba diving, an event that has rarely been reported in the medical literature. A detailed review of other published cases of CO poisoning while scuba diving is included, attempting to identify causes in common and propose methods of prevention.

BACKGROUND: The fetus is uniquely susceptible to carbon monoxide (CO) exposure. We present a case of severe unintentional CO poisoning in the first trimester of pregnancy.
CASE: A 23-year-old G5P2022 female at 11 weeks' gestational age sat in a car with the engine idling. She was unaware that the vehicle's exhaust pipe was blocked with snow. She was found to be unresponsive, with an initial carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) concentration of 47.1%. She underwent emergent treatment with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The remainder of her pregnancy was complicated by a diagnosis of myasthenia gravis. She del

Retrograde amnesia is a recognised neurological complication of carbon monoxide poisoning. This article describes the case of a female found dead in her bath where initial post-mortem findings and the surrounding circumstances raised strong suspicions of homicide, especially when there was contradictory evidence from her husband who was the only other person present. He was later diagnosed as having retrograde amnesia between his two visits to the bathroom to attend to his wife which caused him to merge them into one event, thus arousing suspicions of foul play. The discussion explores the cur

This paper reports the outcome after carbon monoxide poisoning in 31 consecutive patients treated with mechanical ventilation and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, compared with another study of mechanically ventilated patients treated with normobaric oxygen. We found 16.1% hospital mortality and 3.8% severe short-term memory loss, compared with 30% hospital mortality and 20% incidence of serious neurological deficit after treatment with normobaric oxygen; outcome was poor in 19.4% and 44.3% of those treated with hyperbaric and normobaric oxygen, respectively (P < 0.05). Cerebral oedema caused three

INTRODUCTION: Skin lesions may occur in approximately 30 p. 100 of cases of carbon monoxide poisoning. Flushes, erythematous to violaceous blisters on pressure zones due to sweat gland necrosis can be observed in such case.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of acral (fingers, ears and nose) superficial cutaneous necrosis due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
DISCUSSION: Such a complication had never been reported as a cutaneous manifestation of acute carbon monoxide intoxication. Also rare, acral necrotic lesions in a comatose or obnubilated patient should suggest this diagnosis.

Unintentional carbon monoxide poisonings were identified through death certificates, by hyperbaric chambers, and by laboratories required to report carboxyhemoglobin levels greater than 12%. From 1986 to 1991, 981 cases were reported, including 174 deaths. Deaths most often resulted from fire-related carbon monoxide intoxication (36.2%), followed by motor vehicle exhaust (34.5%), and furnaces (10.3%). Among nonfatal cases, furnaces were the leading source of carbon monoxide exposure (44.3%), followed by motor vehicle exhaust (22.8%). The importance of furnaces and other home heating devices in

Plasma leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) levels and respiration rates of isolated liver mitochondria were studied in carbon monoxide (CO)-poisoned rats sampled at respiratory arrest. An increase in LAP levels paralleled a decrease in the respiratory control ratio and the ADP/O ratio. The results suggest that the damage to mitochondria closely correlates with the liver damage in rats during acute CO poisoning.

The aim of the study was to investigate the features of damage to the structures of the brain in acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. The results of forensic, microscopic and morphometric studies of the brain of 78 corpses died from acute carbon monoxide poisoning are presented. The peculiarities of damage to the nervous tissue, the glial complex, as well as changes in the structures of blood vessels and the state of intravascular blood with the formation of aggregates, sludge, and blood clots were revealed. These changes along with perivascular and pericellular edema indicate the agonal deat

Carbon monoxide intoxication is one of the most common types of poisoning in the world. Cardiac manifestations after exposure to carbon monoxide including myocardial ischemia, heart failure and arrhythmias have been reported. A 17-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency service with the complaints of palpitation, headache and nausea. Electrocardiogram revealed supraventricular tachycardia. The arterial blood gas analysis was normal. Her carboxyhemoglobin level was 19% and oxygen treatment was started promptly. Echocardiographic examination demonstrated normal cardiac function. To the best
