Large-cell neuroendocrine cervical carcinoma is a rare and aggressive cancer that tends to spread and recur early despite intensive multimodal treatment. The optimal mode of therapy is still controversial and management during pregnancy is challenging because foetal well-being must also be considered. We report a patient with clinically stage IIB large-cell neuroendocrine cervical carcinoma who presented with a cervical polyp and vaginal bleeding at 18 weeks of pregnancy. The patient received concurrent chemotherapy and radiation after termination of pregnancy and remained in complete remissio

Herein is presented a case of cytokeratin (CK) 20-positive large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the colon, in which the tumor was clinically at stage IV and located in the ascending colon. Pathological examination of the resected tumor revealed nested and solid proliferation of large undifferentiated cells with vesicular nucleus and prominent nucleoli. No areas showed differentiation toward adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. Tumor cells were immunohistochemically positive for chromogranin A, synaptophysin, CD 56 (focal), and bore electron-dense granules. With these features, the tumo

The poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) of the larynx are rare tumors that comprise of a small cell-type (SCNEC) and a large cell-type (LCNEC). In order to consolidate the current knowledge about their characteristics and management a systematic review of the available literature was performed. The PubMed/Medline and Scopus databases search resulted in 141 articles published between 1972 and 2019, describing 273 patients: 230 cases were of SCNEC histology (84.2%) and 43 cases were LCNECs (15.8%). Comparing both histological entities, patients with LCNECs were older (63.2 vs.

Neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) are poorly differentiated neuroendocrine tumors of the upper respiratory tract. We present an extremely rare case of nasopharyngeal large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) synchronized with nasopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Both SCC and LCNEC are associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, supported by the positive result of Epstein-Barr encoding region in-situ hybridization. Strong correlation is found between EBV infection and nasopharyngeal malignancies. Furthermore, the EBV status might be a crucial prognostic factor in nasopharyngea

Neuroendocrine (NE) tumors of the bladder are infrequent. Among them, large cell NE tumor has been outlined only in case reports and short case series, which describes them as aggressive malignancies with dismal prognosis requiring a multidisciplinary approach. The case of an 82-year-old patient with muscle-invasive large cell NE carcinoma of the bladder associated with urothelial carcinoma in situ is presented. Despite combined treatment modality, relapse with metastatic disease was detected 12.5 months after the initial diagnosis. Thereafter, we review several published cases, and results of

An 80-year-old women admitted to our hospital with jaundice. Abdominal contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed an enhanced tumor, measuring 10 mm, at the duodenal ampulla. Upper endoscopy showed a submucosal tumor-like lesion at the duodenal ampulla. Immunohistochemical findings showed positive for chromogranin A and synaptophysin, and neuroendocrine carcinoma was diagnosed. Subtotal stomach-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy with regional lymph node dissection was performed. The final diagnosis was large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma(LCNEC). Multiple metastases of liver, lung and bone were occurre

A 55-year-old man presented with an anterior mediastinal tumor, which was detected on a computed tomography scan for close investigation of blood-stained sputum. Operation was performed with the clinical diagnosis of a thymic carcinoma and the tumor was resected completely. The pathological findings revealed Masaoka stage IV, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the thymus. The patients received postoperative chemotherapy and is well without recurrence for 10 months after the surgery.

A 60-year-old female smoker presented with bloody sputum and back pain. A computed tomographic (CT) scan of the chest revealed a mass lesion in S(1+2) of the left lung and hilarmediastinal lymphadenopathy. TBLB revealed small cell carcinoma. At first, we thought that the patient's clinical staging was c-T4N2M0 IIIB disease. However, it was pointed out she had had hilar-mediastinal lymphadenopathy 7 years previously. Though FDG-PET revealed an increased uptake in the hilar-mediastinal lymph node, she was determined to have surgery. The resected specimen revealed the swollen lymph nodes to be sa

A 37-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of suspicion of the lung cancer in November 2003. Transbronchial tumor biopsy revealed a small number of tumor cells with rhabdoid features, which had eosinophilic cytoplasmic globules. However, a definitive histological diagnosis was not obtained. We considered that a diagnosis of lung malignant tumor was likely according to the findings of chest CT scan and pathology. Although radiotherapy reduced the tumor size, he started to have abdominal pain and tarry stool one month after radio therapy. Multiple small intestine metastases were dete

The authors describe a patient with gastric lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) and jejunal low grade B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) with histologic transformation to large cell lymphoma. In situ hybridization studies for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) demonstrated abundant EBV RNA (EBER) within the neoplastic cells of the gastric LELC and the jejunal large cell lymphoma. The low grade MALT lymphoma was EBER negative. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) studies confirmed the in situ hybridization results, and demonstrated a 30 base pair deletion in the 3' end of the late

A 46-year-old man presented with chest pain at a local hospital in July 2007. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed a 48-mm mass in the anterior mediastinum. CT-guided percutaneous tumor biopsy demonstrated large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the thymus. He was referred to our hospital in August 2007. Because the tumor had already progressed to stage IVb according to the Masaoka classification of thymic epithelial tumors, the patient was treated with combination chemotherapy of cisplatin and irinotecan, which achieved a partial response. However, the tumor relapsed in February 2008. He died

We describe an unusual case of major small-bowel bleeding and intussusception due to jejunal metastases from a large-cell type carcinoma of the lung. Review of the surprisingly frequent case reports of small bowel metastases from primary lung tumors indicates that there is only one prior case report of intussusception and that ours is the first description of major intestinal hemorrhage due to metastatic pulmonary carcinoma.

Pulmonary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) is an uncommon type of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with an incidence of approximately 3% of all lung cancer diagnoses. The patient was a 60-year-old male with a 90-pack year smoking history who presented with dyspnea on exertion and productive cough for five weeks. Decreased breath sounds without respiratory distress and generalized cachexia were noted on the initial physical exam. Laboratory results were unremarkable except for chronic microcytic anemia. Computed tomography revealed extensive lymphadenopathy of the paratracheal, par

Primary tracheal small-cell carcinoma is rare, and is often treated using small-cell lung cancer guidelines given that no standard treatment has been established for it. We report a patient in whom nodules appeared in the trachea and left main bronchus 11 months after surgery for pulmonary large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma; a biopsy revealed small-cell carcinoma. Given the absence of malignant lesions elsewhere in the body, the lesions were diagnosed as primary tracheal small-cell carcinoma. Respiratory failure progressed rapidly owing to airway stenosis caused by the growing lesion, and the

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma and basaloid squamous cell carcinoma are each rare but aggressive diseases of the head and neck. A case of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma occurring simultaneously with a basaloid squamous cell carcinoma originating from the oral cavity is described in this report. The diagnosis of these pathologies can be challenging but is important, as staging and treatment recommendations differ from those for oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive skin tumour with neuroendocrine differentiation. Immunotherapies are effective in the treatment of patients with advanced-stage MCC, but for patients whose tumours cannot be controlled by the immune system, alternative approaches are urgently needed.
OBJECTIVES: To identify overexpressed oncogenes as potential drug targets for MCC.
METHODS: NanoString platform, digital droplet polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assays were used to determine copy number variations (CNVs); BCL2L1 and PARP1 mRN

RATIONALE: T-cell large granular lymphocytic leukemia (T-LGLL) is a rare lymphoproliferative neoplasm of cytotoxic T cells and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common form of kidney cancer, but T-LGLL associated with RCC has never been reported.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 58-year-old Chinese male presented with general fatigue and intermittent-remittent fever, accompanied by palpitations and dizziness.
DIAGNOSIS: Radical nephrectomy was performed, and a diagnosis of clear cell carcinoma (T1N0M0, I phase) was made based on the postoperative pathology findings. With typical cellular morphology,
