Merkel Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the head and neck is a rare and aggressive non-melanoma skin cancer. The objective of this study was to assess the oncological outcome of MCC by retrospective review of electronic and paper records of a population-based cohort of 17 consecutive cases of the head and neck MCC without distant metastasis, diagnosed in Manitoba between 2004 and 2016. The average age of the patients at initial presentation was 74.1 ± 14.4 years with 6 patients presenting with stage I, 4 with stage II, and 7 with stage III disease. Both surgery or radiotherapy alone were the primary tr

[The neuroendocrine Merkel cell carcinoma of the skin].

Seven primary skin tumors from 5 women and 2 men were analyzed by light and electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry. The tumors were localized on the face (3 tumors) and on the extremities. The maximum diameter was between 1 and 3.5 cm. Two tumors metastasized to the regional lymph nodes 4 months after excision of the primary, 1 tumor metastasize to the regional lymph nodes after 5 years and the patient died of multiple metastases 8 years after excision of the primary on the forearm. No local recurrences developed. The tumors occurred in the dermis with frequent infiltration of the subcuta

Merkel cell carcinoma of the labial mucosa. An immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study with a review of the literature on oral Merkel cell carcinomas.

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare cutaneous neuroendocrine tumor that occurs predominantly in the head and neck region of older patients. An 88-year-old white man had an erythematous, umbilicated tumor on his lower lip, which on histopathologic examination showed solid sheets of infiltrating basaloid round cells with a high mitotic index. Globular, paranuclear immunostaining for low-molecular-weight cytokeratins (Nos. 8, 18, and 19) and neurofilament was observed. On ultrastructural examination, the tumor cells demonstrated paranuclear whorls of intermediate filament aggregates and occasional el

Promoter activity of Merkel cell Polyomavirus variants in human dermal fibroblasts and a Merkel cell carcinoma cell line.

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) is a human polyomavirus that establishes a life-long harmless infection in most individuals, with dermal fibroblasts believed to be the natural host cell. However, this virus is the major cause of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), an aggressive skin cancer. Several MCPyV variants with polymorphism in their promoter region have been isolated, but it is not known whether these differences affect the biological properties of the virus. METHODS: Using transient transfection studies in human dermal fibroblasts and the MCC cell line MCC13, we compared the tra

Bulky palpebral Merkel cell carcinoma of the eyelid.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive tumour of the skin, characterised by a high rate of local recurrence and lymph node involvement. We present the case of a 58-year-old woman who developed a 5-cm tumour on the right lower eyelid, leading to ocular occlusion. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an exophytic lesion in the right orbit, and a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of MCC. After complete surgical resection and cervical emptying, the patient was treated with adjuvant radiotherapy. The final diagnosis was MCC, stage pT3 pN1 M0. The periocular location and tumour size were d

Recurrent Merkel Cell Carcinoma Following COVID-19 Treatment.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer influenced by the immune system. Recent studies suggest that viral infections, notably COVID-19, may exacerbate such malignancies. This case report explores potential mechanisms by which SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, could influence the behavior and proliferation of malignant tumor cells. Emerging evidence indicates that COVID-19 may disrupt immune surveillance and modulation, which are critical in controlling the spread and severity of cancers, including MCC. Additionally, the cytokine storm induced by C

Neoadjuvant Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy for Merkel Cell Carcinoma.

A 78-year-old man presented with rapidly enlarging lymph nodes in the right preauricular region and neck. Needle biopsy revealed a cytokeratin 20-positive, high-grade neuroendocrine neoplasm consistent with Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). Cross-sectional imaging disclosed a 5.2-cm intraparotid mass and extensive adenopathy in the ipsilateral cervical and submental chains (Figs 1A and 1C), without distant metastatic disease. A skin examination did not reveal a primary lesion (hence, stage IIIA, T0N1bM0). The patient's history was notable for hypertension, diet-controlled diabetes type II, high cho

Jejunal metastasis of Merkel cell carcinoma: case report.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the skin is a rare but aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine-derived malignancy that predominantly affects elderly white males. The presence of distant nodal metastases significantly impacts survival. Typical metastatic sites of MCC are liver, bone, brain and skin. Gastrointestinal metastases are uncommon and small bowel is the most common site followed by stomach. We report a case of symptomatic MCC jejunal metastasis.

Merkel cell carcinoma in a young pregnant woman.

We present a 27-year-old pregnant woman with Merkel cell carcinoma on the forehead. In early pregnancy, the lesion was excised as an epidermal cyst. It was only after recurrence that a diagnosis of Merkel cell carcinoma was made. Sentinel-node biopsy, excision with 2 cm margins and reconstruction with free microvascular radial forearm flap was carried out, and the patient received postoperative radiotherapy. No evidence of recurrence or disease progression was found 24 months after surgery.

Merkel cell carcinoma: an updated guide for pathologists.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive, poorly differentiated neuroendocrine cutaneous carcinoma that has rapidly increased in incidence over the past decades. Due to the significant risk of recurrence, metastasis and mortality, prompt diagnostic recognition of MCC is essential to guide timely management. Definitive diagnosis can be challenging, especially in the context of limited sampling, morphological variants, immunophenotypic aberrancy or metastatic disease of unknown primary. The differential diagnosis can include other small cell malignancies, especially extracutaneous small cell
