Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the parotid gland. Its clinical behavior is determined by the relative ratio of mucous and epidermoid cells with pathologic high-grade tumors containing a greater proportion of epidermoid cells. Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rarely reported variant with unclear long-term clinical behavior. A 23-year-old female was found to have a deep lobe parotid mass on imaging studies. Preoperative evaluation was non-diagnostic. Intraoperatively, the tumor was found to be adherent to the lower division of the facial nerve and portions

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus is an extremely rare malignant mediastinal neoplasm, and to our knowledge, only 13 cases have been reported. We report a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus that was seen in a 53-yr-old man with right chest pain. Chest CT scan showed a huge, cystic mass having a focal solid portion with direct invasion of the adjacent anterior chest wall and pericardium in the anterior mediastinum. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus should be included in the differential diagnosis for masses of the anterior mediastinum associated with extensive cystic chang

We successfully treated a 33-year-old man with mucoepidermoid carcinoma at the carina. Through preoperative spiral computed tomography with multiplanar and three-dimensional reconstructions, the lesion extended along the right main bronchus across the orifice of the right upper lobe. He underwent a carinal resection plus right upper lobectomy and reconstruction of the carina. He shows neither anastomotic complication nor recurrence of disease 1 year after surgery. Spiral computed tomography was used to evaluate the preoperative and postoperative state of the central airway.

We report a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the trachea in a 23-year-old pregnant female in her 39th week. The patient had cough and wheezing in the early morning for 9 months before admission. No abnormalities were detected on a chest roentgenogram. At Caesarean section, fiberscopy revealed a polypoid lesion narrowing the trachea. The pathologic diagnosis made from the biopsy specimen obtained was low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma and the lesion was resected. Airway hyperresponsiveness was shown before resection with airflow limitation, however, airway reactivity and airflow limitation i

Mixed carcinoma (squamous and glandular) of the penis is a rare neoplasm with an unknown origin and a poorly defined prognosis. The mucoepidermoid carcinoma described herein has not been previously reported to our knowledge. The present carcinoma arose from and extensively ulcerated the squamous epithelium of the glans penis, including that surrounding the urethral meatus. The neoplasm was composed of well-differentiated nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma associated with large areas of carcinoma formed by cell nests that contained poorly differentiated squamous elements and large eosinoph

We present herein the case of a 64-year-old man diagnosed as having a mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the pancreas. The tumor originated in the tail of the pancreas and invaded the spleen, left adrenal gland, left kidney, and transverse colon. Liver and peritoneal metastases were also noted. Despite surgical treatment and adjuvant chemotherapy, the disease progressed rapidly and the patient died of cachexia 4 months after his initial diagnosis. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the pancreas is a rare entity, and is believed to be a form of adenosquamous carcinoma known as adenoacanthoma. However, in thi

A case of high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the breast of a 46-year-old woman was studied. Of 19 axillary lymph nodes examined in the surgical specimen, 17 displayed metastatic cancer. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of primary breast cancer histologically comparable with high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of salivary-gland origin.

A well-differentiated mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the subglottis of a 77-year-old man was studied by light and electron microscopy. The tumor consisted of mucous cells, epidermoid cells, and intermediate cells of both differentiation. Mucous cells formed glands and cystic spaces filled with mucin. Abundant tonofibrils in aggregates were observed in tumor cell cytoplasms when they were differentiated into epidermoid cells. Epidermoid cells varied in differentiation.

Pediatric tracheobronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), also called pulmonary MEC, is a rare malignant primary lung neoplasm that is typically found in the large airways. Patients may present with symptoms such as cough, pneumonia, fever, hemoptysis, dyspnea, wheezing, chest pain, weight loss, and fatigue. These nonspecific symptoms (or lack of symptoms in some cases) often result in a delayed diagnosis. Chest CT typically demonstrates findings consistent with bronchial obstruction and diagnosis is made via histopathology. Surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment and children often h

Salivary gland neoplasms are rare, comprising less than 5% of pediatric head and neck tumors, with mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) being the most common malignant type. MEC in the parotid gland is exceedingly rare in children. Histologically, MEC tumors consist of squamous cells, mucus-secreting cells, and lymphoid infiltration, reflecting their complex cellular composition. This case report presents a 9-year-old female with a one-year history of progressive, painless swelling in the left cheek, accompanied by facial nerve palsy. Imaging studies revealed a heterogeneously enhancing mass in the

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common salivary gland malignancy, accounting for 27% of all salivary gland cancers. Identified in 1921 and first analyzed in 1945, mucoepidermoid carcinoma has demonstrated a widely diverse histology with several morphologic variants having been described. One rare feature is the formation of intratumoral bone, which has been previously reported once in the English language literature. Though the etiology of these calcifications is still not known, it is believed that this finding is independent of overall disease prognosis. This case report illustrates thi

Pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is an uncommon tumor constituting only 0.1% to 0.2% of all lung carcinoma. It is classified under "salivary gland type" tumors in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of lung cancers. It generally carries a better prognosis than the more common small cell and nonsmall cell lung carcinomas. It is pathologically classified into high-grade and low-grade tumors. High-grade tumors are usually unresectable at presentation. However, surgery is the mainstay of treatment, which aims at surgically negative margins for a complete cure. In our patient

Malignant tumors of the paranasal sinus are uncommon, constituting less than 1% of all malignancies and 3% of all head and neck cancers. Nonsquamous cancers of the maxillary sinus are even rarer as is evident from the limited data available on the clinical characteristics and outcomes. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma accounts for 13% of all malignancies occurring in maxillary sinus. We report a rare case of high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of maxillary sinus in a 45-year-old female along with review of the literature.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant salivary gland tumour. Central mucoepidermoid carcinomas (CMC) are an exceedingly rare subgroup, representing 2-4% of all cases. The authors report on a case of CMC in a patient who presented with trigeminal neuropathy, trismus and distant metastasis. The possible pathogenesis of CMC and criteria for diagnosis are discussed.

OBJECTIVES: To describe a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland that caused obstruction of a salivary gland duct and manifested as a parotid retention cyst.
PATIENT AND METHODS: A 21-year-old woman presented with a 5-cm cystic swelling in her left parotid region. Ultrasound examination and a computerized tomography scan showed a clearly outlined parotid cyst. Through a conventional parotidectomy incision, the cyst was excised with parotid gland tissue around the lesion. The patient had an uncomplicated recovery.
RESULTS: Histopathological examination of the resected parotidec

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoïd carcinomas (MEC) are very rare (less than 20 cases reported in the literature) and potentially malignant bronchial gland carcinomas.
PATIENTS: Three children, two boys (11 and 7 years old) and one girl (5 years old) suffered from respiratory symptoms such as cough, recurrent pneumonia and/or hemoptysis for 2 to 12 months. Bronchial endoscopy showed a mass into the left (two cases), or the right main bronchus (one case). Chest CT scan identified local extension, and lung-associated lesions. Histopathological study concluded to MEC in the three cases. The patients wer

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the expression of invadopodia-related proteins in mucoepidermoid carcinoma and their influence on this tumor's invasiveness.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-seven mucoepidermoid carcinoma grading samples were evaluated for the expression of Tks4, Tks5, cortactin, and MT1-MMP and compared to 10 control samples of normal-looking salivary glands by immunohistochemistry. For in vitro analysis, immunofluorescence identified the expression of invadopodia-related proteins in the mucoepidermoid carcinoma cell line. Invadopodia formation and invasion assays were perf

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the conjunctiva is a rare, aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma, with limited reports of systemic metastasis.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 86-year-old man presented with a suspicious conjunctival lesion. Initial biopsy was inconclusive, but excision confirmed moderately differentiated mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Despite treatment, the tumor showed rapid orbital invasion. Imaging later revealed bilateral lung and liver metastases. Cytology confirmed metastatic spread. The patient died two months later.
DISCUSSION: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the conjunc

Pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma (PMEC) is rare and challenging to diagnose. Its association with paraneoplastic syndromes is poorly described. It is also uncommon for a patient with lung cancer to present with multiple paraneoplastic syndromes. We report a case of a patient with metastatic high-grade PMEC associated with three paraneoplastic syndromes, namely, humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy, ectopic ACTH syndrome, and paraneoplastic leukemoid reaction.
