BACKGROUND: Cytogenetic studies performed in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) identified chromosome 10q rearrangements with breakpoints at 10q11.2 as the most frequent aberrations in these tumors. In the current study, the authors aimed to identify other chromosomal abnormalities nonrandomly associated with papillary thyroid carcinomas.
METHODS: Cytogenetic analysis was performed on 94 papillary thyroid carcinomas after short-term culture of the tumors sterile fragments.
RESULTS: Clonal chromosomal changes were found in 37 tumors (40%). Structural cytogenetic abnormalities were observed in

A 47-year-old man presented with an inverted papillary carcinoma of the urinary bladder. Cystoscopy revealed an approximately 2 cm mass, with a small stalk and smooth surface, which was situated just medial to the right ureteral orifice. Transurethral resection of the tumor was performed on July 25, 1983. Malignant changes were recognized in the epithelial cords in the resected specimen. This is in contrast to the general view that inverted papilloma of the urinary bladder is benign in nature. The authors believe that careful pathologic examination should be done when an inverted type tumor of

A case of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid occurring in association with systemic sarcoidosis is reported. Although benign thyroid disorders occurring in conjunction with sarcoidosis have previously been documented, a search of the literature found no report of thyroid carcinoma occurring in association with sarcoidosis. Diagnosis and therapeutic management prove difficult when thyroid carcinoma and sarcoidosis co-exist. Transbronchial biopsy of lung lesions is warranted in staging thyroid carcinoma in order to exclude the possibility of unknown co-existent disease. The management of cervica

INTRODUCTION: Intracystic papillary carcinoma is defined as papillary carcinoma located in a dilated or cystic duct. There is no consensus regarding the management of this lesion. The aim of our study is to evaluate the frequency of associated invasive lesions and the need to perform an axillary staging during surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study concerning intracystic papillary carcinomas diagnosed at the Georges-François Leclerc Cancer Center between January 2010 and December 2021. Inclusion criteria were an age superior to 18 years and a histologic diagnosis confirm

Papillary squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma. The predominant occurrence sites are larynx, oropharynx, and nasopharynx. Only a few patients have been reported in the oral cavity. Theoretically, it could be easily diagnosed based on pathological investigation, but due to its growth pattern, the most part of the mass is covered by benign squamous papilloma. There might be some misdiagnosis and therefore the surgical resection is not so radical. Herein, the authors report an unusual patient of PSCC. The whole process of diagnosis and treatment might provid

Male breast cancer is a rare disease in the male breast whereas gynecomastia is quite common. An elevation of the estrogen-to-androgen ratio increases the risk of both of these diseases. However, a connection between gynecomastia and subsequent breast cancer development is controversial and unclear. Imaging studies including mammography and ultrasound provide valuable information in leading to a correct diagnosis. Traditionally, intracystic papillary carcinoma, also known as encapsulated papillary carcinoma, has been considered a form of ductal carcinoma in situ. Recent immunohistochemical stu

BACKGROUND: Warthin-like papillary carcinoma of thyroid is characterized by distinct papillary formations lined by tumor cells with oncocytic cytoplasm, nuclear features of papillary carcinoma, and brisk lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates in the papillary stalks. This tumor derives its name from its close resemblance to Warthin tumor of major salivary glands.
DESIGN: The clinicopathologic features of 17 patients with Warthin-like papillary carcinoma were studied.
RESULTS: Fifteen tumors occurred in women and 2 arose in men (age range, 23-63 years). The lesions ranged in size from 3 mm to 2.5 cm.

In a retrospective study of 119 patients, followed for 1 to 30 years after treatment of a papillary carcinoma of the thyroid, the authors searched for possible prognostic factors of the risk of recurrence. Microcarcinomas, anaplastic tumors and Hürthle cell carcinomas were excluded from the study. In a univariate analysis, age (greater than 45 years), sex (male), loss of histologic differentiation, size (greater than 3 cm), presence of carcinomatous lymphangitis, extrathyroid extension, and presence of metastasis at diagnosis were associated with a higher recurrence rate; type of growth and mu

An example of papillary carcinoma developing at the ureteroileal junction with herniation of the tumor into the lumen of an ileal conduit is reported. This and similar tumors have occurred within 4 years of urinary diversion, emphasizing the need for continued surveillance of patients with an ileal conduit. Patients with widespread atypia of the transitional epithelium of the urinary tract, such as ours, are especially prone to recurrent carcinoma and should be watched most carefully. Surgical excision of the tumor occurring at or near the ureteroileal junction should always include a cuff of

The most common neoplasm is thyroid carcinoma, which can be categorized into papillary, follicular, medullary, undifferentiated, and anaplastic cancers based on histological features (ATC). Papillary thyroid carcinoma accounts for 70-80% of thyroid cancer cases and 1% of all malignancies. This disease entity is notorious for spreading to nearby lymph nodes, especially the cervical lymph nodes, and may manifest as a developing mass on the side of the neck. However, because of the palpable mass, these lesions usually become apparent and are detected quickly. We are reporting a case of an 18-year

Papillary thyroid carcinoma is a well-differentiated cancer with a high cure rate after surgery. Metastases are rare, and typically involve cervical lymph nodes, lungs, or bone. Cutaneous metastases are much less common and portend a poor prognosis because of widely disseminated disease. Although clinical presentation may vary, histopathology and immunohistochemistry are distinctive. Frequent locations of cutaneous metastases include the scalp, face, and neck. This case highlights an uncommon presentation of an isolated cutaneous papillary thyroid carcinoma metastasis in a young female patient

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to investigate CT imaging features, pathological findings, and prognosis in patients with thyroid hemiatrophy (THA) associated with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC).
METHODS: This retrospective study included 225 patients with histopathologically proven PTC treated by surgical resection who underwent preoperative CT scanning. On CT images, THA was defined as thyroid parenchymal hemiatrophy on the ipsilateral side of PTC. CT findings, overall survival, and disease-free survival were compared between patients with and without THA. Pathological findings were als

Cervical lymph node metastasis is frequent in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma. In addition to the extent of thyroidectomy, the need as well as the extent of concomitant lymphadenectomy has been a subject of controversy and debate. The central compartment is the most frequent site of metastasis followed by the lateral compartment although skip metastasis in the lateral compartment can occur. Papillary thyroid carcinoma can also present with cervical lymph node metastasis, while the primary tumor remains clinically undetectable. Surgical removal of clinically involved nodal metastasis

Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) metastasizing to the hypopharynx is extremely rare. Here, we describe FDG PET/CT findings of lesions in the posterior hypopharyngeal wall and left parapharyngeal space in a 58-year-old man who complained of blood in the sputum. The patient had a history of postoperative PTC. Therefore, hypopharyngeal carcinoma with lymph node metastasis was suspected. However, metastasis of PTC was pathologically confirmed after surgery. Hypopharyngeal metastasis of PTC is rare, which should be differentiated from hypopharyngeal carcinoma with metastasis.

The main nonmedullary form of thyroid cancer is papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) that accounts for 80-90% of all thyroid malignancies. Only 3-10% of PTC patients have a positive family history of PTC yet the familiality is one of the highest of all cancers as measured by case control studies. A handful of genes have been implicated accounting for a small fraction of this genetic predisposition. It was therefore of considerable interest that a mutation in the HABP2 gene was recently implicated in familial PTC. The present work was undertaken to examine the extent of HABP2 variant involvement i

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid cancer. Here, we describe the genomic landscape of 496 PTCs. We observed a low frequency of somatic alterations (relative to other carcinomas) and extended the set of known PTC driver alterations to include EIF1AX, PPM1D, and CHEK2 and diverse gene fusions. These discoveries reduced the fraction of PTC cases with unknown oncogenic driver from 25% to 3.5%. Combined analyses of genomic variants, gene expression, and methylation demonstrated that different driver groups lead to different pathologies with distinct signaling and d

Intracystic papillary carcinoma of the breast (ICP) is a rare form of noninvasive breast cancer. The average age of onset is 65 years. Patients with ICP have a greater than 15-year survival rate advantage compared to patients with other breast carcinomas. There have been no reports of disease-related deaths in patients with ICP and no increased risk of disease in the contralateral breast. No definitive conclusions have been made regarding adjuvant treatment; however, ICP should generally be treated like ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Tamoxifen is often recommended.

BACKGROUND: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare dominantly inherited disease characterized by the association of gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyposis, mucocutaneous hyperpigmentation, and increased risk of cancer at different target organs. Its occurrence with differentiated thyroid cancer, particularly papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), even if rare, has been described.
SUMMARY: We here present a case of PTC observed in a PJS patient and a review of the literature aiming at discussing the utility of thyroid surveillance in the management of these patients. A 22-year-old woman presenti
