Small cell carcinoma of the head and neck.

Treatment methods for patients with small cell carcinoma of the head and neck are changing. Increasing clinical experience with these tumors and a better appreciation of patterns of recurrence, the need for thorough tumor staging, and the importance of chemotherapy as a form of primary therapy have contributed to these changes. Current concepts regarding small cell carcinoma arising in the head and neck are reviewed. Reported results of treatment for a variety of head and neck sites and site-specific relapse rates are summarized. New cases of small cell carcinoma arising in the hypopharynx, pa

Chemotherapy response in primary peritoneal small cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Small cell carcinoma (SCC) is a neuroendocrine tumor that usually originates in the lungs but can also arise from extrapulmonary sites. Extrapulmonary small cell carcinomas (EPSCCs) are aggressive and rare, with limited data guiding their management. This case report contributes to the literature by presenting the diagnosis and treatment of primary peritoneal SCC. CASE PRESENTATION: This case describes a 69-year-old man who presented with abdominal distension and pain, raising concerns for metastasis. He had a history of prostate cancer treated with radical prostatectomy and pelvi

A Rare Case of Rectosigmoid Small Cell Carcinoma.

Colorectal small cell carcinomas are very rare neuroendocrine malignancies of the colon or rectum. They have poor prognosis due to the aggressive and highly recurrent nature of the disease. It is a malignancy that is also poorly understood with limited literature, and thus there is no consensus in management. This case report presents the clinical features and radiological images of an otherwise healthy 74-year-old gentleman with a rare and aggressive 112-mm rectosigmoid small cell carcinoma with evidence of metastatic disease. This report will also discuss the most current and pertinent diagn

Primary renal small cell carcinoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Small cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignant tumour that is frequently accompanied by extensive metastasis. Primary renal SCC has typical characteristics related to SCC and is extremely rare, with no uniform treatment standard. Clinical treatment is mainly based on the literature. Here we report the diagnosis and treatment of an interesting case of primary renal SCC. CASE SUMMARY: We report a tortuous course of treatment for a 68-year-old man. Four years before diagnosis, the patient developed continuous gross haematuria, during which he underwent several ureteral biopsies, ureteral

Petrous metastasis of a lung small cell carcinoma.

Malignant tumors of the temporal bone are rare. They include a wide histological variety. They are mostly primary tumors with an estimated incidence of 0.8-1.0 per 1,000,000 inhabitants per year [1]. Metastases form an uncommon subgroup. The clinical features of these temporal bone metastases are nonspecific and predominantly consist of hearing loss, vertigo, facial palsy, tinnitus, headache, otalgia or otorrhoea [2]. The aim of our publication is to report a rare case of metastasis in the temporal bone as initial manifestation of lung cancer. Our patient was a 44-year-old man who presented fo

Metastatic Rectal Small Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report.

We report a case of metastatic small cell carcinoma presenting as a rectal mass in an 80-year-old male with a history of change in bowel movement and rectal pain for six months. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen and pelvis was done, which showed a large rectal mass with many liver metastases. He had a diagnostic colonoscopy, which showed a large obstructing rectal mass, and the biopsy result came back as small cell carcinoma. He underwent palliative diverting colostomy without complications. Initially, there was a plan to treat the patient with systemic chemotherapy with etoposide

Small Cell Carcinoma of the Vulva: Case Report.

Neuroendocrine tumours are rare in the gynaecologic tract, comprising approximately 2% of all gynaecological tumours. They have an aggressive behaviour and are a diagnostic and clinical challenge, due to their rarity and the lack of standardized therapeutic approaches. There are a few case reports. It is defined as a high-grade carcinoma exhibiting neuroendocrine differentiation. The authors describe the case of a 70-year-old woman, with vulvar neuroendocrine small cell carcinoma after superficial vulvectomy. The patient was submitted to a surgery with wide local excision and adjuvant radiatio

Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the posterior tongue.

In the head and neck mucosa, neuroendocrine carcinomas of the oral cavity is rare. Herein, we present the first report of a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in a 54-year-old man on the right lateral posterior tongue. It is important to remember that although neuroendocrine small cell carcinomas (SCCs) are most commonly seen in the lung, they rarely may arise in the extrapulmonary sites, including salivary glands, as well. As there is not any standard therapeutic regimen already existing, it is important to be aware of and to know how to deal with such rare cases.

Mediastinal small cell carcinoma: a unique clinical entity?

PURPOSE: Mediastinal small cell carcinoma (MSCC) is a rare tumor with limited published literature. In view of diagnostic confusion pertaining to this tumor, we investigated its origin, clinical features, management and survival. METHODS: Clinical data of MSCC patients were retrospectively reviewed. Eligible patients showed pathologically proven small cell carcinoma (SCC) with the primary lesions confined to the mediastinum. Survival information was collected through follow-up studies. RESULTS: Among 25 MSCC patients identified, 22 were classified to have limited disease (LD), while 3 were w

[Severe hyponatremia during chemotherapy for small cell carcinoma].

INTRODUCTION: The small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a rapidly progressive malignancy with a poor prognosis. Its chemosensitivity mandates prompt treatment. Hyponatremia occurs frequently in patients with small cell lung cancer due to the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). We report a case of severe hyponatremia induced by chemotherapy that required management in intensive care. OBSERVATION: A 68-year-old patient was undergoing treatment for small cell cancer, invading the right lung. On the second day of the first cycle of treatment (cisplatine-vepeside), the patient becam

Metastatic small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast.

Cutaneous metastases from internal malignancies in women overwhelmingly emanate from the breast and typically exhibit features of an adenocarcinoma, although other histopathologic patterns may also be seen. Neuroendocrine breast carcinoma represents an uncommon variant of mammary carcinoma with fewer than 40 cases of the small cell subcategory reported. As with other small cell carcinomas, they may exhibit Merkel cell-like features and appropriate diagnosis of these tumor deposits often turns on clinical history and an appropriate immunohistochemical profile. Herein, we report the first known

[A new case of pleural small cell carcinoma].

Small cell carcinoma (SCC) is commonly of pulmonary origin. Pleural small cell carcinoma is a very uncommon feature. We report here a case of small cell carcinoma of the pleura in a 36 year old man. The diagnosis of primary disease SCC of the pleura was established by transparietal pleural biopsy in absence of any mediastino-pulmonary or extrathoracic other lesions that could be the primary tumor. The treatment was based on chemotherapy with cisplatin and etoposide. The patient died four months in spite of cytotoxic chemotherapy. Extrapulmonary small cell carcinoma is a rare entity. Sleeve segmentectomy for non-small cell lung carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Although sleeve segmentectomy for centrally located lung cancers was originally designed for patients unable to tolerate lobectomy, we have tried it in patients with noncompromised function as well. We evaluated the efficiency of this atypical type of bronchoplasty. METHODS: Of 202 patients for whom we performed bronchoplasty for primary non-small cell lung carcinoma, 16 underwent sleeve segmentectomy. RESULTS: Sixteen patients were classified into 4 groups according to the mode of bronchial reconstruction: type A, anastomosis between the right intermediate or left main and basal

Small cell carcinoma of the kidney: case report.

An 83-year-old female diagnosed with small cell carcinoma of the kidney is reported on. The clinical picture was similar to that seen with transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis. A right nephroureterectomy was performed and a histological examination revealed similar morphological features to those of small cell carcinoma of the lung. Neuroendocrine differentiation was proven by a positive immunoreaction to neuron-specific enolase. A review of the literature indicated that in the urinary tract, most of the cases of small cell carcinoma occurred in the urinary bladder, with this case b

Primary small cell carcinoma of skin. Histogenetical study.

Four cases of primary small cell carcinoma of the skin (PSCCS) are presented (ages ranging from 60 to 68 years). Ultrastructurally, two cell types were identified, with both presenting electron-dense secretory granules and paranuclear intermediate filaments. Argyrophylia was positive in one case. Intense solar elastosis in two cases and actinic keratosis in one case suggest a possible role from solar damage in the pathogenesis of this tumor. According to comparative ultrastructural features, different histogenetic possibilities in Merkel cells (MC), peripheral neuroblastic tissue, and totipote

Metastatic small cell carcinoma masquerading as orbital myositis.

A case of discrete metastases to an extraocular muscle from a silent small cell carcinoma is described. Clinically, diagnostically, and pathologically this masqueraded as orbital myositis. It was not until a full thickness muscle biopsy was obtained that the diagnosis was realized. The need for deep biopsy is stressed. Discrete metastases to an extraocular muscle without other orbital soft tissue involvement is rarely reported. This is the first reported case from a small cell primary tumor. Metastatic orbital disease is discussed.

Atypical Presentation of Non-small Cell Lung Carcinoma.

The typical presentation of non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) is hemoptysis, dyspnea, and chest pain. A late cancer diagnosis commonly leads to the patient presenting with metastasis to the bone, liver, adrenal glands, or brain. We present a 58-year-old man who visited the emergency department with a headache for two weeks. A CT scan of the brain revealed a right posterior parietal mass with surrounding vasogenic edema and sulcal effacement as well as a large mass arising from the sella. The patient underwent mass resection, and the pathology results indicated a metastatic adenosquamous ca
