Catheterization laboratories open the doors for Extended Realities-review of clinical applications in cardiology.

The complexity and spatial relationships between vascular and cardiac structures, as well as anatomical diversity, pose a challenge for planning and performing cardiac interventions. Medical imaging, especially precise three-dimensional imaging techniques, plays a key role in the decision-making process. While traditional imaging methods like angiography, echocardiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging remain gold standards, they have limitations in representing spatial relationships effectively. To overcome these limitations, advanced techniques such as three-dimensional

Imaging of pericardial disease.

Pericardial pathology is most often identified by its effect on cardiac function. Echocardiography is usually performed first in evaluation of pericardial disease, but is occasionally limited or indeterminate. MR imaging is often helpful in these cases, offering superior soft tissue contrast and the ability to image the entire pericardium and its relationship to cardiac structure and function. Many of the techniques recently developed for myocardial imaging are equally applicable to the pericardium and frequently assist in the diagnosis of pericardial disease. In this article, the authors revi

Multimodality Imaging Assessment of Fabry Disease.

Fabry disease is a lysosomal storage disease with a variety of cardiac manifestations. Although not specific for a diagnosis of Fabry disease, certain cardiac imaging findings may be highly suggestive of the diagnosis of Fabry disease in previously undiagnosed patients or cardiac involvement for patients with a known diagnosis of Fabry disease. In this review, we explore the current applications of multimodality cardiac imaging in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with Fabry disease. Additionally, data regarding tissue characterization by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and novel nuc

[Magnetic resonance imaging and spiral computed tomography in the diagnosis and follow-up of adults with congenital heart and vessel disease].

Management of patients with congenital heart disease requires detailed information on cardiac and great vessel morphology. In previous years the diagnosis and treatment of congenital malformations often depended on cardiac catheterization and in many institutions cardiac catheterization still remains the gold standard against which other modalities are measured. In the past decade, however, imaging methodologies have increasingly shifted toward the use of less invasive and noninvasive techniques. Currently, echocardiography is the initial method of choice in evaluating the anatomy, especially

[Ventricular storm in a young man with primary hypokinetic dilated cardiomyopathy: why thinking of sarcoidosis?].

The diagnostic approach to patients with cardiac sarcoidosis is challenging, as the disease may occur as a subclinical entity or have heterogeneous clinical manifestations ranging from ventricular arrhythmias to advanced cardiac failure. Therefore, while clinical suspicion remains key, imaging techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and myocardial scintigraphy play an important confirmatory role. Final diagnosis requires histological proof on cardiac or extracardiac biopsy. A multidisciplinary context is essential for appropriate diagnosis, staging and management. We present the

Diagnosis and treatment of cardiac amyloidosis: position statement of the German Cardiac Society (DGK).

Systemic forms of amyloidosis affecting the heart are mostly light-chain (AL) and transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidoses. The latter is caused by deposition of misfolded transthyretin, either in wild-type (ATTRwt) or mutant (ATTRv) conformation. For diagnostics, specific serum biomarkers and modern non-invasive imaging techniques, such as cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) and scintigraphic methods, are available today. These imaging techniques do not only complement conventional echocardiography, but also allow for accurate assessment of the extent of cardiac involvement, in addition t

Echocardiographic tissue imaging evaluation of myocardial characteristics and function in cardiomyopathies.

Current echocardiography techniques have allowed more precise assessment of cardiac structure and function of the several types of cardiomyopathies. Parameters derived from echocardiographic tissue imaging (ETI)-tissue Doppler, strain, strain rate, and others-are extensively used to provide a framework in the evaluation and management of cardiomyopathies. Generally, myocardial function assessed by ETI is depressed in all types of cardiomyopathies, non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in particular. In hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), ETI is useful to identify subclinical disease in fami

Tumors of the cardiac valves: imaging findings in magnetic resonance imaging, electron beam computed tomography, and echocardiography.

We describe the findings from various cross-sectional imaging modalities in patients with cardiac valve adherent masses. The techniques are discussed, and imaging findings are compared with the results of cardiac surgery. All three patients had neurological symptoms and/or cardiac murmurs. Transthoracic and/or transesophageal echocardiography revealed the cardiac mass in all three. For differentiation of thrombus and cardiac neoplasm magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was also performed in all three patients and electron-beam computed tomography (EBCT) in two. Fast segmented cine gradient-echo M

Evolution of Diagnostic and Treatment Patterns of Cardiac Sarcoidosis.

Cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) may impart substantial morbidity and mortality, and novel imaging modalities are now available to aid in early diagnosis of this clinically silent disease. A better understanding of the clinical experience with CS is important. Twenty-eight patients were diagnosed with the aid of multimodality imaging techniques and were treated by a multidisciplinary team. Demographics, symptomatology, imaging, and therapeutic interventions were compiled from our referral center. In patients with CS, nuclear and MR techniques were often the first studies performed. Multimodality Imaging in Arrhythmogenic Left Ventricular Cardiomyopathy.

The term arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) describes a large spectrum of myocardial diseases characterized by progressive fibrotic or fibrofatty replacement, which gives the substrate for the occurrence of ventricular tachyarrhythmias and the development of ventricular dysfunction. This condition may exclusively affect the left ventricle, leading to the introduction of the term arrhythmogenic left ventricular cardiomyopathy (ALVC). The clinical features of ALVC are progressive fibrotic replacement with the absence or mild dilation of the LV and the occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias withi

Cardiac sarcoidosis: challenges in clinical practice.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To address the current recommendations for screening, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiac sarcoidosis and the difficulties to put these recommendations into clinical practice. RECENT FINDINGS: The incidence of cardiac sarcoidosis appears to be higher than earlier reported, probably because of improved imaging techniques. Late gadolinium enhancement with cardiac MRI (LGE-CMR) and fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography obtained a central role in the diagnostic algorithm and monitoring of disease activity. New techniques are being investigated: T1 and T2 mapping for e

Twenty-five years of research in cardiac imaging in electrophysiology procedures for atrial and ventricular arrhythmias.

Catheter ablation is nowadays considered the treatment of choice for numerous cardiac arrhythmias in different clinical scenarios. Fluoroscopy has traditionally been the primary imaging modality for catheter ablation, providing real-time visualization of catheter navigation. However, its limitations, such as inadequate soft tissue visualization and exposure to ionizing radiation, have prompted the integration of alternative imaging modalities. Over the years, advancements in imaging techniques have played a pivotal role in enhancing the safety, efficacy, and efficiency of catheter ablation pro

Multimodality Imaging in Cardiomyopathies with Hypertrophic Phenotypes.

Multimodality imaging is a comprehensive strategy to investigate left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), providing morphologic, functional, and often clinical information to clinicians. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is defined by an increased LV wall thickness not only explainable by abnormal loading conditions. In the context of HCM, multimodality imaging, by different imaging techniques, such as echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance, cardiac computer tomography, and cardiac nuclear imaging, provides essential information for diagnosis, sudden cardiac death stratification, and manageme

Cardiovascular imaging in children with cardiac implantable electronic devices.

The number of children with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) is increasing at a time of rapid growth in cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) and cardiac computed tomography (CT) utilization. The presence of CIEDs poses challenges with respect to imaging safety and quality. A thoughtful approach to cardiovascular imaging in patients with CIEDs begins with an awareness of the clinical indications to determine the most appropriate imaging modality. Understanding device characteristics allows one to ensure that the proper safety measures are taken before and during cardiac MR and cardiac
