Nurse-based secondary preventive follow-up by telephone reduced recurrence of cardiovascular events: a randomised controlled trial.

Enhanced follow-up is needed to improve the results of secondary preventive care in patients with established cardiovascular disease. We examined the effect of long-term, nurse-based, secondary preventive follow-up by telephone on the recurrence of cardiovascular events. Open, randomised, controlled trial with two parallel groups. Between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2014, consecutive patients (n = 1890) admitted to hospital due to stroke, transient ischaemic attack (TIA), or acute coronary syndrome (ACS) were included. Participants were randomised (1:1) to nurse-based telephone follow-up (i

Management of postoperative hypothermia in the cardiovascular surgery intensive care unit: A qualitative study based on insights from nurses.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring and managing postoperative hypothermia in patients undergoing cardiac surgery is essential. Nevertheless, little is known about nurses' experiences in assessing and managing postoperative hypothermia after cardiac surgery, highlighting the need for studies to explore their clinical experiences and perspectives. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the experiences of cardiovascular surgery intensive care unit nurses in managing postoperative hypothermia after cardiovascular surgery. METHODS: This interpretative/constructivist phenomenological study was conducted with

Translating a Nurse-Led Coping-Sleep-Adherence Bundle Into Routine Cardiovascular Care: A Theory-Informed Implementation Blueprint.

BACKGROUND: Adults with cardiovascular disease frequently experience anxiety, sleep disturbance, and challenges with long-term treatment adherence. These factors are associated with poorer quality of life, reduced engagement in guideline-directed therapy, and increased healthcare utilization. Although nurses are well-positioned to address these needs, nurse-led behavioral interventions often encounter barriers to sustained adoption in routine clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to describe a theory-informed implementation blueprint for integrating a nurse-led coping-sleep-ad

Lifestyle Behaviours and Antiplatelet Medication Adherence Among Post-Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Patients in Saudi Arabia: Implications for Holistic Cardiovascular Nursing Care.

Background: Lifestyle behaviours and medication adherence are interrelated components of cardiovascular secondary prevention, yet their co-occurrence in Middle Eastern post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) populations remains poorly characterised. This study described smoking status and physical activity patterns, assessed antiplatelet medication adherence, and explored associations between lifestyle factors and adherence among Saudi patients following PCI. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 236 Saudi adults who had undergone PCI within the preceding 12 months at two

Intraindividual reproducibility of postprandial and orthostatic blood pressure changes in older nursing-home patients: relationship with chronic use of cardiovascular medications.

OBJECTIVES: Although postprandial and orthostatic hypotension are commonly observed in nursing home residents, their reproducibility, relationship to each other, and association with chronic use of cardiovascular medications are poorly understood. DESIGN: We examined blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) before and after postural change, and before and after a 419-kcal meal in 22 nursing home residents (mean age 89 +/- 5 (SD) years), each on two occasions, to determine reproducibility changes. These studies were repeated in 17 residents, with and without previous administration of cardiovas

What constitutes the 'Minimal Care' interventions of the nurse, physiotherapist, dietician and psychologist in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and secondary prevention: A position paper from the Italian Association for Cardiovascular Prevention, Rehabilitation and Epidemiology.

BACKGROUND: In cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation, care activities are carried out by different professionals in coordination, each with their own specific competence. This GICR-IACPR position paper has analysed the interventions performed by the nurse, physiotherapist, dietician and psychologist in order to identify what constitutes minimal care, and it lists the activities that are fundamental and indispensable for each team member to perform in clinical practice. RESULTS: In analysing each type of intervention, the following dimensions were considered: the level of clinical care

Rationale and design of a nurse-led intervention to extend the HIV treatment cascade for cardiovascular disease prevention trial (EXTRA-CVD).

Persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV) are at increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). In spite of this, uptake of evidence-based clinical interventions for ASCVD risk reduction in the HIV clinic setting is sub-optimal. METHODS: EXTRA-CVD is a 12-month randomized clinical effectiveness trial that will assess the efficacy of a multi-component nurse-led intervention in reducing ASCVD risk among PLHIV. Three hundred high ASCVD risk PLHIV across three sites will be randomized 1:1 to usual care with generic prevention education or the study intervention. T

A Narrative Review of How Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders and Cardiovascular Diseases Are Linked: An Update for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBDs), including obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea, are common among patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD), but clinicians often do not pay enough attention to SRBDs. The purpose of this narrative review is to update advanced practice registered nurses on the literature focusing on the relationship between SRBDs and CVD (eg, hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, and stroke) and on treatments that can improve SRBDs in patients with CVD. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: We conducted an electronic

Global perspectives on heart disease rehabilitation and secondary prevention: a scientific statement from the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions, European Association of Preventive Cardiology, and International Council of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation.

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death, morbidity, disability, and reduced health-related quality of life, as well as economic burden worldwide, with some 80% of disease burden occurring in the low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings. With increasing numbers of people living longer with symptomatic disease, the effectiveness and accessibility of secondary preventative and rehabilitative health services have never been more important. Whilst LMICs experience the highest prevalence and mortality rates, the global approach to secondary prevention and cardiac rehabilitation, whi

Effects of nurse-led multidisciplinary team management on cardiovascular hospitalization and quality of life in patients with atrial fibrillation: Randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is globally the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia which increases patient morbidity and mortality, dramatically influencing well-being. Despite substantial efforts, an optimal clinical pathway for chronic atrial fibrillation management has yet to be developed. In recent practice, a multidisciplinary team management has been recommended for patients with atrial fibrillation. However, experiments exploring nurse-led multidisciplinary team management in chronic atrial fibrillation management relative to standard clinical management are still sparse and limit

The role of public health nurses in risk factor modification within a high-risk cardiovascular disease population in Ireland - a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Health promotion for cardiovascular disease risk factors management is essential to secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease events. In Ireland, post-cardiac rehabilitation patients are discharged into the care of community public health nurses, who have a health promotion role. Little is known of the public health nurses' perceptions or knowledge surrounding their role in cardiovascular disease risk factor management. Underpinned by a constructivist viewpoint, this study aims to generate empirical evidence on the phenomenon directly from public health nurses' encounters

Living with peripartum cardiomyopathy: A statement from the Heart Failure Association and the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions of the European Society of Cardiology.

This statement focuses on the fact that women with peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) have a substantial mortality and morbidity rate. Less than 50% of patients have full recovery of their cardiac function within 6 months of diagnosis. Also, patients with recovered cardiac function often suffer from comorbidities, such as hypertension or arrhythmias, which require long-term treatment. This has major implications which extend beyond the life of the patient, as it may also substantially impact her family. Women with a new diagnosis of PPCM should be involved in the decision-making processes regard

Rotating Night Shift Work and Risk of Incident Cardiovascular Disease and Mortality by Chronotype: A Prospective Cohort Study in Nurses' Health Study II.

INTRODUCTION: Rotating night shift work is associated with chronic circadian disruption and may contribute to higher cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and mortality. The impact of rotating night shift work may vary by chronotype, particularly when an individual's circadian preference is misaligned with work schedules. METHODS: In 2009, 69,458 women (mean age 54.4 years) free of CVD in the Nurses' Health Study II reported chronotype. Duration of rotating night shift work has been assessed biennially since 1989. Participants were followed from 2009 through June 2021 for incident CVD (myocardial
