Physical Activity, Trust, and Research Participation Among Men From Minority Ethnic Backgrounds Living With Prostate Cancer: A Qualitative Study.

OBJECTIVE: Men from minority ethnic backgrounds experience a disproportionate burden of prostate cancer yet remain underrepresented in physical activity-related and psycho-oncology research. This study aimed to explore (1) how men from diverse ethnic backgrounds experience and interpret physical activity (PA) following prostate cancer, and (2) how psychological, cultural, and structural factors influence their engagement with PA and research. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten men from African, Caribbean, Asian, and Middle Eastern backgrounds living with prostate canc

First integrative study of the diversity and specificity of metacercariae of Posthodiplostomum Dubois, 1936 from native and introduced fishes in the Caribbean.

Metacercariae of the genus Posthodiplostomum are often recorded in freshwater fish hosts. While the diversity and taxonomy of this genus are receiving increasing attention in molecular phylogenetic studies, available data remain geographically biased. Most molecular studies of Posthodiplostomum and morphologically similar (neascus) worms originate in North America and Europe and Asia (more than 60% of DNA sequences are from USA and Canada), with few data currently available from the Neotropics, where high host diversity suggests high and under-sampled parasite diversity. In this study, we repo

The Characteristics of Diverticular Disease in Caribbean Population: A Control Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Diverticulosis is not well characterized in the Caribbeans. Our aim was to compare the anatomical presentation of colonic diverticulosis in African Caribbeans (group AC) versus Europeans (group E) and severity. METHODS: We conducted a prospective controlled study involving 274 patients admitted for lower gastrointestinal haemorrhage (LGIH) in France (center 1: Guadeloupe; center 2: La Roche-sur-Yon); 179 cases with diverticular haemorrhage, including 129 in group AC and 40 in group E. Exploration of the colon included a detailed assessment of diverticula using a dedicated endoscop

African Americans' and Black Caribbeans' Religious Coping for Psychiatric Disorders.

This study investigates the use of religious coping among African Americans and Black Caribbeans with 12-month DSM-IV psychiatric disorders. Data from the National Survey of American Life is used to examine three indicators of religious coping: 1) using prayer and other spiritual practices for mental health problems, 2) the importance of prayer in stressful situations, and 3) looking to God for strength. Three out of four respondents who had a mental health problem reported using prayer as a source of coping. Agoraphobia and drug abuse disorder were associated with the importance of prayer dur

Examining the role of socioeconomic deprivation in ethnic differences in sexually transmitted infection diagnosis rates in England: evidence from surveillance data.

Differences by ethnic group in STI diagnosis rates have long been recognized in England. We investigated whether these may be explained by ethnic disparities in socioeconomic deprivation (SED). Data on all diagnoses made in sexual health clinics in England in 2013 were obtained from the mandatory STI surveillance system. Poisson regression was used to calculate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) of STIs, by ethnicity, with and without adjustment for index of multiple deprivation (IMD) a measure of area-level deprivation. Unadjusted IRRs (95% confidence intervals) were highest for gonorrhoea [8·18 (7

Innovation for the 'bottom 100 million': eliminating neglected tropical diseases in the Americas.

An estimated 100 million people in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region live on less than US$2 per day, while another 46 million people in the US live below that nation's poverty line. Almost all of the 'bottom 100 million' people suffer from at least one neglected tropical disease (NTD), including one-half of the poorest people in the region infected with hookworms, 10% with Chagas disease, and up to 1-2% with dengue, schistosomiasis, and/or leishmaniasis. In the US, NTDs such as Chagas disease, cysticercosis, toxocariasis, and trichomoniasis are also common among poor populations. T

Phylogenetic subtypes of human T-lymphotropic virus type I and their relations to the anthropological background.

Isolates of human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) were phylogenetically analyzed from native inhabitants in India and South America (Colombia and Chile) and from Ainu (regarded as pure Japanese descendants from the preagricultural "Jomon" period). Their genomes were partially sequenced together with isolates from Gabon in central Africa and from Ghana in West Africa. The phylogenetic tree was constructed from the sequence data obtained and those of previously reported HTLV-I isolates and simian T-lymphotropic virus type I (STLV-I) isolates. The heterogeneity of HTLV-I was recently recogni

Co-Producing the Design Brief for an Intervention to Increase Breast Cancer Awareness Among Black Women in Ante-Natal Settings: A Qualitative Study With Breast Cancer Survivors, Community Members, and Midwives in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Women of Black African/Caribbean heritage in the UK are more likely to develop breast cancer at an early age (before being eligible for breast screening from 50 years of age), be diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, and have lower survival than White British women. Culturally acceptable interventions are needed to encourage timely symptomatic presentation. OBJECTIVE: Using the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) stages of intervention development, we developed the design brief for an intervention to be delivered in ante-natal settings to Black women not yet eligible for breast cancer s

HIV and HTLV-I infections in the Americas: a regional perspective.

With over 143,000 cases of AIDS reported to the World Health Organization from 145 countries and with an estimated 5 to 10 million people worldwide infected with HIV, AIDS has become firmly established as a global pandemic. In the region of the Americas over 100,862 cases of AIDS have been reported with indigenous transmission documented in 45 to 46 countries. While North America has the highest annual number of AIDS cases per population, with 72 cases/million, the Caribbean subregion has a disproportionately high number of cases, with annual rates as high as 200 to 300 cases/million populatio

The impact of blood pressure variability and African Caribbean ethnicity on the progression of diabetic kidney disease in type 1 diabetes.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Blood pressure variability (BPV) is a risk factor for kidney disease progression in hypertension and type 2 diabetes; however, the role of BPV in kidney disease in type 1 diabetes is unknown. The aim of this study was therefore to determine whether BPV has an impact on kidney disease progression in an ethnically diverse cohort of people with type 1 diabetes. METHODS: We studied 3079 people (median age 36 [range 18-85] years; 50% female; 78.5% White, 10.9% African Caribbean, 4.5% Asian, 6.1% Other) with type 1 diabetes and baseline eGFR >45 ml/min per 1.73m2 attending two univ

Socioeconomic disadvantage accounts for most of the early childhood development gap among children of adolescent mothers: A cross-national analysis of 15 Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Children of adolescent mothers face elevated risks of early childhood development (ECD) delay. Whether this reflects maternal age or the socioeconomic disadvantage that predisposes young women to early childbearing remains debated. We conducted a secondary analysis of Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey data (rounds 5 and 6, 2013-2022) from 15 Latin American and Caribbean countries, comprising 23,650 children aged 36-59 months. Using survey-weighted regression with cluster-robust standard errors, we examined associations between adolescent motherhood and ECD scores, discipline practices, and bel

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma in London: clinical experience of 21 cases.

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is uncommon in the United Kingdom and has so far been restricted to people of Afro-Caribbean extraction. Between 1981 and 1995, 21 cases presented to 2 inner London teaching hospitals where 17% of the population are of Afro-Caribbean origin. Clinical presentations were similar to those of the disease in HTLV-I-endemic areas. Major responses (CR + PR) were obtained in 10/16 assessable patients (63%) treated with combination chemotherapy. However, median survival was only 5.5 months. Disease progression and opportunistic infection were the major causes of tr

Establishing the first Afro-Caribbean breast cancer cell lines reveals ECM pathway enrichment and distinctive drug sensitivities.

Women of African ancestry develop more aggressive breast cancer (BCa) with poorer survival outcomes, yet only 8% of available cell lines represent this population, impeding targeted treatment development. Here, we aimed to establish and characterize new cell lines from an Afro-Caribbean patient to better understand population-specific BCa biology. We developed three lines (ACRJ-BC24 parent, α, and β) from a patient with 100% African ancestry. Karyotype analysis revealed progressive chromosomal instability, with the β-clone showing X-11 translocations correlating with higher Ki-67 expression an

Incidence of HTLV-1-associated myelopathy in the UK from 1991 to 2024: a longitudinal observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) may cause spinal cord inflammation, leading to HTLV-1-associated myelopathy (HAM). HAM is a chronic and progressive neurological disorder that is associated with increased mortality and impaired quality of life. There are limited data on the incidence of HAM, with higher rates seen in Latin America and the Caribbean compared to Japan. We investigated the incidence of HAM in a cohort of initially asymptomatic people with HTLV-1 in the United Kingdom (UK). METHODS: This is a longitudinal retrospective observational study of people wi

The neglected tropical diseases of Latin America and the Caribbean: a review of disease burden and distribution and a roadmap for control and elimination.

The neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) represent some of the most common infections of the poorest people living in the Latin American and Caribbean region (LAC). Because they primarily afflict the disenfranchised poor as well as selected indigenous populations and people of African descent, the NTDs in LAC are largely forgotten diseases even though their collective disease burden may exceed better known conditions such as of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, or malaria. Based on their prevalence and healthy life years lost from disability, hookworm infection, other soil-transmitted helminth infections,

Shades of health: Skin color, ethnicity, and mental health among Black Americans.

Skin color is an important predictor of health outcomes among Black Americans. Black Americans with darker complexions experience worse physical and psychological functioning than those with lighter complexions. However, most research on the health effects of colorism focuses solely on African Americans, omitting the experiences of other Black subpopulations. Using data from the National Survey of American Life (NSAL), we investigate the relationship between skin color and mental health among African Americans (N = 3393) and Caribbean Blacks (N = 1378).
