Reprint of: The European badger, Meles Meles, as a new host for Trichinella britovi in Romania.

The European badger, Meles meles (Carnivora, Mustelidae) is a widespread opportunistic omnivorous mammal. Its food spectrum comprises a wide variety of plants and small animals, occasionally including rodents, such as mice or rats. Considering that rodents are known to play a key role in the life cycle of Trichinella spp., the aims of this study were to investigate the occurrence of these parasites in badgers from Romania and to identify the species. Overall, 61 badgers originating from 14 counties were examined by trichinoscopy and artificial digestion. For species determination, the positive

Mercury distribution, exposure and risk in Poyang Lake and vicinity, China.

Mercury (Hg), especially methylmercury (MeHg), which is highly neurotoxic, is a global pollutant that can affect human health because of its accumulation in aquatic products. Poyang Lake, an inland lake in China, has been significantly affected by human activity, yet there is limited understanding of local mercury contamination and potential exposure pathways to humans. In this study, we explored the risks of mercury exposure by sampling sediments, plants, and aquatic organisms in the lake and surrounding areas and analyzing total Hg (THg) and MeHg levels. Sediment sampling was conducted at th

A One Health perspective on comparative cannabidiol and cannabidiolic acid pharmacokinetics and biotransformation in humans and domestic animals.

The goal of pharmacokinetic (PK) studies is to provide a basis for appropriate dosing regimens with novel therapeutic agents. With a knowledge of the desired serum concentration for optimum pharmacological effect, the amount and rate of drug administration can be tailored to maintain that concentration based on the 24-hour PK modeling (eg, every 24 hours, every 12 hours) to achieve therapeutic ranges. This dosing and PK information are tailored to maintain that concentration. Typically, these optimum serum concentrations pertain across species. Single-dose PK modeling provides fundamental para

Trendy, but Are They Safe? Current Popular Diets and Their Use in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Narrative Review.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) arises from the interplay between genetic susceptibility, immune dysregulation, microbiota, and environmental exposures, with diet potentially contributing to both pathogenesis and management. Patients frequently modify their diet independently, often using different strategies during remission and active symptoms. This narrative review synthesises evidence on patient-accessible dietary patterns and selected structured nutritional therapies across five domains: incident IBD, objective intestinal inflammation, gastrointestinal symptoms and quality of life, nutri

Effects of small hydropower plants on mercury concentrations in fish.

Although the impacts of large dams on freshwater biota are relatively well known, the effects of small hydropower plants (SHP) are not well investigated. In this work, we studied if mercury (Hg) concentrations in fish rise in two tropical SHP reservoirs, and whether similar effects take place during impoundment. Total Hg concentrations in several fish species were determined at two SHP in the Upper Guaporé River basin floodplain, Brazil. In total, 185 specimens were analysed for Hg content in dorsal muscle and none of them reported levels above the safety limit (500 μg kg-1) for fish consumpti

Chronic Ingestion of Coal Fly-Ash Contaminated Prey and Its Effects on Health and Immune Parameters in Juvenile American Alligators (Alligator mississippiensis).

Coal-burning power plants supply approximately 37 % of the electricity in the United States. However, incomplete combustion produces ash wastes enriched with toxic trace elements that have historically been disposed of in aquatic basins. Organisms inhabiting such habitats may accumulate these trace elements; however, studies investigating the effects on biota have been primarily restricted to shorter-lived, lower-trophic organisms. The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), a long-lived, top-trophic carnivore, has been observed inhabiting these basins, yet the health or immune effect

Intrabiliary rupture of hydatid cyst of the liver.

Infestation with Echinococcus granulosus is common in Iraq, where a close relationship exists between dogs, the carnivorous definitive hosts, and sheep, the herbivorous hosts of the parasite. Plants contaminated by eggs of the tapeworm passed in the dog's faeces may be ingested by man, giving rise to hydatid disease. Of 136 cases of hydatid disease affecting various tissues and organs studied and treated during a 3-year period, the liver was involved in 94; intrabiliary rupture occurred in 15. Pain, hectic fever, and obstructive jaundice were invariable in these 15 cases but biliary obstructio

Echinococcosis (hydatid disease): a review and report of a case of secondary echinococcosis.

Echinococcosis is a disease caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus. The adult worm lives parasitically in the intestine of the definitive host, the dog, wolf and other wild carnivores. The ova, which are passed in the feces, are ingested by grazing animals. The intestinal juices free the ovum from its cuticle and, having entered a capillary, it is carried by the blood stream to the liver or lung, where it develops into a hydatid cyst. Man becomes infected by ingesting contaminated vegetables or drinking contaminated water. In a mature hydatid cyst there may be thousands of scolice

Ecological stoichiometry characteristics and influencing factors of the source reservoir in the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.

To explore the interaction between aquatic organisms and the environment in the Danjiangkou Reservoir, the source reservoir for the Middle Route of China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project, this study analyzed the ecological stoichiometric characteristics of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in main species and their influencing factors. The results revealed that there were no significant differences in the contents of nitrogen and phosphorus in fish between the upstream and downstream areas. Compared to omnivorous and filter-feeding species, carnivorous fish in both the upstream and down

Bioactive Potential of Nepenthes miranda Flower Extracts: Antidiabetic, Anti-Skin Aging, Cytotoxic, and Dihydroorotase-Inhibitory Activities.

Carnivorous plants have garnered attention as sources of pharmacologically active compounds, yet their floral tissues remain largely underexplored. In this study, we investigated the bioactive properties of Nepenthes miranda flower extracts prepared using water, methanol, ethanol, and acetone. Among these, the ethanol extract exhibited the highest total phenolic content (18.2 mg GAE/g), flavonoid content (68.9 mg QUE/g), and antioxidant activity (DPPH IC50 = 66.9 μg/mL), along with strong antibacterial effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Cosmetically relevant enzyme inh

No easy solution for the fractionation of faecal nitrogen in captive wild herbivores: results of a pilot study.

Faecal nitrogen (FN) concentration is used as a marker for habitat quality and digestive efficiency in free-ranging herbivores. In herbivores, FN can be separated into undigested plant N (analysed as the N concentration of the neutral detergent residue) and metabolic faecal N (MFN). It has been suggested that by differential analysis of the faecal fibre-bound N, the MFN fraction can be further split into a bacterial N and an endogenous N fraction [Hesta et al., Br. J. Nutr. 90 (2003) 1007]. We applied these methods to 96 faecal samples of 48 mammalian herbivore species from zoos. Species were

Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in Galapagos birds: Inference of risk factors associated with diet.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic intracellular parasite of particular concern in the conservation of wildlife due to its ability to infect all homeotherms and potentially cause acute fatal disease in naive species. In the Galapagos (Ecuador), an archipelago composed of more than a hundred islets and islands, the presence of T. gondii can be attributed to human-introduced domestic cats, but little is known about its transmission in wildlife populations. We compared the prevalence of antibodies against T. gondii in sympatric Galapagos wild bird species that differ in diet and contact with oocyst-

Phenotypic Changes of Trichinella Spiralis Treated By Commiphora Molmol,Lepidium Sativum, and Albendazole: in Vitro Study.

Trichinellosis is a nematode-causing disease distinguished by its continuous transmission in the carnivores and omnivores. Despite effective eradication of the enteral forms, conventional drugs fail to eliminate the migrating and muscle ones. Over the past years, researchers intensified the work on herbal medicines as alternatives or aids to albendazole, the reference drug. This research hypothesizes that the therapeutic agent absorption route could be an evidence-based carrier molecule or auxiliary drug to albendazole. Accordingly, this in vitro study was designed to investigate mainly the ph

Distribution and pathophysiologic role of molybdenum-containing enzymes.

The importance of molybdenum-containing enzymes in the pathophysiology of a number of clinical disorders necessitates a comprehensive understanding of their histological localization and expression. The objectives of this review are to cover such enzymes so far reported and their enzyme- and immunohistochemical localization in various tissues and species, and to discuss their possible pathophysiological effects. The molybdenum cofactor is essential for the activity of the three molybdenum-containing enzymes, sulfite oxidase, xanthine oxidase and aldehyde oxidase. Sulfite oxidase serves as the

The Effects of Lycopene on the Growth Performance, Antioxidant Capacity, and Liver Health of Hybrid Groupers (♀ Epinephelus fuscoguttatus × ♂ E. lanceolatus) Under the Influence of Aflatoxin B1.

The continued rise in fishmeal prices and the scarcity of fishery resources have led to an increase in the use of plant-based protein sources in compound feed, making mold contamination in compound feed a frequent occurrence. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination in aquaculture feed can seriously harm fish growth and liver health; it is extremely toxic, posing an even greater risk to carnivorous fish such as grouper. Lycopene, a natural carotenoid, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory physiological functions and may act as a functional feed additive to mitigate damage induced by mycotoxins. This

Trichinella spp. imported with live animals and meat.

Nematodes of the genus Trichinella are widely distributed throughout the world in omnivorous and carnivorous animals (mammals, birds, and reptiles) and in incidental hosts. To prevent the transmission of these zoonotic parasites to humans, meat samples from Trichinella spp. susceptible animals are tested at the slaughterhouse or in game processing plants. The aim of the present review was to collect documented cases on Trichinella infected animals, meat, or meat derived products which reached the international trade or were illegally introduced from one to another country in personal baggage.

Physiological responses of hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus X Epinephelus lanceolatus) to temperature fluctuation stress revealed by LCMS/MS-based mucus and sera metabolomics.

Aquaculture, which involves the cultivation of aquatic animals and plants, is recognised to be an effective and vital resource-efficient food production system for supplying affordable protein to humans. Hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus x Epinephelus lanceolatus) is a marine carnivorous teleost that has a high economic importance in the marine aquaculture industry particularly in countries in the Asian region. However, the vulnerability of juvenile hybrid grouper to temperature fluctuations stemming from the acceleration of climate change is regarded as one of significant threats to t

Inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 Nsp9 ssDNA-Binding Activity and Cytotoxic Effects on H838, H1975, and A549 Human Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells: Exploring the Potential of Nepenthes miranda Leaf Extract for Pulmonary Disease Treatment.

Carnivorous pitcher plants from the genus Nepenthes are renowned for their ethnobotanical uses. This research explores the therapeutic potential of Nepenthes miranda leaf extract against nonstructural protein 9 (Nsp9) of SARS-CoV-2 and in treating human non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) cell lines. Nsp9, essential for SARS-CoV-2 RNA replication, was expressed and purified, and its interaction with ssDNA was assessed. Initial tests with myricetin and oridonin, known for targeting ssDNA-binding proteins and Nsp9, respectively, did not inhibit the ssDNA-binding activity of Nsp9. Subsequent sc
