Eleven organic solvents were tested for their suitability in the use of capillary electrophoresis (CE). In all cases, 25 mM ammonium acetate and 1 M acetic acid were used as electrolytes. We administered four beta-adrenoreceptor blocking agents--pindolol (15 mg/day), propranolol (60 mg/day), carteolol (15 mg/day), and labetalol (150 mg/day)--to essential hypertensive patients, and followed the changes in levels of serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and its isoenzymes for 1 year. Beta-adrenoceptor mechanisms in guinea-pig taenia caecum were studied by means of a receptor-binding technique. Hill plots of test drugs obtained from inhibition curves were linear with slopes which were equal to 1.00. pKi-values of isoprenaline and desisopropylprocaterol were in agreement with those pD2-values. pKi-value of carteolol was in agreement with its pA2-value. The beta-adrenoceptor is suggested to have two different sites; one can interact with the agonist and partial agonist and the other can interact with the antagonist and partial agonist.

The effects of adrenergic agents on bovine ciliary muscle were studied in vitro. Norepinephrine, phenylephrine, or isoproterenol did not affect the muscle tone. PURPOSE: To report a case of corneal neovascularization possibly associated with latanoprost therapy.
CASE REPORT: A 67-year-old man developed a progressive stromal corneal neovascularization in his right eye within eight months of a corneal trauma. At admission, he was receiving latanoprost 0.005% therapy. His topical medications were rearranged: latanoprost was replaced with carteolol hydrochloride 1% twice daily bilaterally and prednisolone acetate 1% was added twice daily in the right eye.
