A topical imiquimod-induced oral mucosal lichenoid reaction: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Imiquimod (IMI) is a topical immune response modifier used in the treatment of actinic keratosis and cheilitis. Actinic cheilitis is a potentially premalignant condition that requires therapeutic intervention. IMI therapy is noted for producing cutaneous and mucosal adverse effects. The authors report the case of an 88-year-old woman who was treated for actinic cheilitis of the upper lip with IMI and who consequently experienced an oral mucosal lichenoid reaction of the lower lip and right buccal mucosa. RESULTS: The patient was treated successfully with high-dose steroid therapy,

Topical methimazole as a new treatment for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation: report of the first case.

We have previously shown that the peroxidase inhibitor methimazole (1-methyl-2-mercapto imidazole; MMI) is a noncytotoxic inhibitor of melanin production in cultured B16 melanocytes. It was further demonstrated that the topical application of 5% MMI on brown guinea pig skin for 6 weeks causes a significant reduction in the amount of epidermal melanin, resulting in visually recognizable cutaneous depigmentation. Herein, we report a 27-year-old male with postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (due to acid burn), successfully treated with topical MMI as a new skin depigmenting agent. Topical 5% MMI c

Topically applied minoxidil may cause fetal malformation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Minoxidil is a K(+) channel opener able to cause relaxation of vascular smooth muscles and modify cell growth and cell fate or migration. It is now widely used for its hair growth promoting effects. When locally applied, it is absorbed through the skin and may have systemic pharmacological effects. CASE: A 28-year-old white pregnant woman daily applied minoxidil 2% to her scalp because of hair loss. At the 22nd gestational week, after a routine ultrasound test showing significant brain, heart, and vascular malformations of the fetus, pregnancy was interrupted. The placenta had num

Topical bovine thrombin: a 21-year review of topical bovine thrombin spontaneous case safety reports submitted to FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System.

PURPOSE: To review topical bovine thrombin spontaneous adverse event (AE) reports that were forwarded to the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) between January 1986 and December 2006. METHODS: Forty-one spontaneous AE reports were summarized for reported AE profile and chronological reporting patterns. Each AE report was adjudicated by a hematologist for the topical bovine thrombin product that was given and the AE(s) that were reported. AEs were grouped as allergic, coagulopathy/bleeding, and all other AEs combined. Grouped AE serial analyses were c

Tranilast/roxithromycin with topical tacrolimus in refractory atopic facial eczema: Case report.

One challenge in atopic dermatitis is facial eczema, which requires delicate management because of the sensitive nature of facial skin. This report presents a 30-year-old male patient with facial eczema associated with atopic dermatitis, which could not be cured by conventional treatment, even with the continuation of oral betamethasone. The facial lesions were treated with pediatric 0.03% tacrolimus ointment. The patient was administered 200 mg/day tranilast and 300 mg/day roxithromycin. Within 3 weeks, his eczematous lesions on the face, as well as the severe itching, were completely cured.

Policresulen is effective for the topical treatment of vaginal varices in a pregnant mare: Case report.

Vaginal varicosities in mares are rarely reported, although considered relatively common. Clinical recognition can be challenging, especially during early pregnancy, due to the intermittent nature of the bleeding. This report aims to describe the diagnostic approach, clinical evolution, and treatment of a case of vaginal varicosity in a pregnant mare, emphasizing a practical and minimally invasive method. A 9-year-old Brazilian Sport Horse mare with intermittent vaginal hemorrhage underwent clinical evaluation, showing no abnormalities. Vaginoscopy with a rigid endoscope revealed varicose vein

Pleural Effusion Induced by Systemic Consumption of Topical Minoxidil: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Pleural effusions can be caused by several conditions such as cancer, connective tissue disease, and infection. They are occasionally caused due to the adverse drug reaction. Most commonly, systemic minoxidil use can cause pleural effusions in patients with chronic kidney disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a patient without chronic kidney disease who developed pleural effusion as a result of unintentional use of topical minoxidil orally. The patient's oxygen saturation was 90% on room air; there was dullness to percussion and asymmetrical chest expansion with dimin

Recurrent vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia successfully treated with topical imiquimod: A case report.

Vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) is a rare disease associated with human papillomavirus infection. High-grade VAIN is typically treated with either excisional or ablative therapy. However, recurrent VAIN lesions are common and these treatments cause vaginal scarring. Recent studies have indicated that 5% imiquimod is an effective treatment for VAIN. The present report describes a case of a woman diagnosed with recurrent VAIN 3 who was treated with a 5% topical imiquimod cream and achieved a complete response after excision and CO2 laser vaporization. A 53-year-old, gravida 5, para 2 po
