Retrospective occupational exposure assessment for case-control and case-series epidemiology studies based in Shanghai China.

To provide exposure information for epidemiology studies conducted in Shanghai from 2001 to 2008, we completed retrospective exposure assessments (EA) of benzene and other hazards. Interviewers administered questionnaires to subjects from Shanghai area hospitals. An initial exposure screening by EA staff members, blinded as to case-control status, stratified jobs into exposed, unexposed, or uncertain categories prior to review by a separate expert panel (EP). Resources for the EA included job/industry-specific questionnaire responses by subjects, short-term benzene area concentration measureme

Gut Mycobiome in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Review of Case-Control Studies.

BACKGROUND: The bacterial composition of the microbiome in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been the focus of substantial interest. In contrast, the fungal part of the microbiome, the mycobiome, has only rarely been investigated-although anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies, an antibody against fungal mannan, have been known for years as a biomarker for Crohn's disease (CD), but not for ulcerative colitis (UC). METHODS: A systematic review of case-control studies on the human gut mycobiome in IBD was conducted using searches in EMBASE and MEDLINE. RESULTS: Twenty-seven studies, with

Association between adipokines and thyroid carcinoma: a meta-analysis of case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of thyroid carcinoma is increasing all over the world. Some studies have suggested that the change of adipokines expression can induce thyroid carcinoma. However, other studies have come to the opposite conclusion. Therefore, we studied the relationship between adipokines and thyroid carcinoma. METHODS: Databases-PubMed, Cochrane Library, SinoMed, CNKI, Wanfang, and clinical trial registries were searched. A meta-analysis was then performed through a fixed or random-effects model to calculate I values for heterogeneity analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-nine articles were fi

Erectile dysfunction in testicular cancer survivors: a meta-analysis of case-control studies.

INTRODUCTION: Testicular cancer (TC) is the most frequent cancer among men aged 14-44 years. The risk of erectile dysfunction (ED) in TC patients varied within a wide range across different studies. This study aims to estimate the risk of ED in TC patients by conducting a meta-analysis of case-control studies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Relevant studies were searched using PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library up to June 2019. Case-control studies that reported the incidence of ED in TC patients were included. RESULTS: A total of 8 studies involving 2060 TC patients and 2651 healthy me

Association between benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and osteoporosis: two nested case-control studies.

UNLABELLED: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) was related to a 1.28 times higher risk of osteoporosis. In addition, osteoporosis was associated with a 1.34 times higher risk of BPPV. This bidirectional relation was maintained after adjusting past medical histories and lifestyle factors, including obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption. To our knowledge, this is the first study to explore the reciprocal association between BPPV and osteoporosis. In subgroup analyses, only women showed a reciprocal association between BPPV and osteoporosis. INTRODUCTION: A previous population cohor

A semiparametric efficient estimator in case-control studies for gene-environment independent models.

Case-controls studies are popular epidemiological designs for detecting gene-environment interactions in the etiology of complex diseases, where the genetic susceptibility and environmental exposures may often be reasonably assumed independent in the source population. Various papers have presented analytical methods exploiting gene-environment independence to achieve better efficiency, all of which require either a rare disease assumption or a distributional assumption on the genetic variables. We relax both assumptions. We construct a semiparametric estimator in case-control studies exploiti

Subcutaneous Versus Transvenous Implantable Defibrillator Therapy: A Meta-Analysis of Case-Control Studies.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to conduct a meta-analysis comparing efficacy and safety outcomes between subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD) and transvenous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (TV-ICD). BACKGROUND: The S-ICD was developed to minimize complications related to the conventional TV-ICD. Direct comparison of clinical outcomes between the 2 devices has been limited by varying patient characteristics and definitions of complications with no randomized trials completed comparing these systems. METHODS: Studies in the PubMed and Embase databases and secondary

[Clinical and radiological studies of seizure in chronic subdural hematoma--case control study].

We studied the mechanism underlying seizure induction in patients with chronic subdural hematoma. In our study population of 1,009 patients with chronic subdural hematoma, 26 (2.6%) had seizure-related complications. Six of them had already been diagnosed with epilepsy (4 patients) or suspected of having secondary epilepsy (2 patients) after experiencing traffic accidents or cerebral bleeding. Twenty patients (seizure group) had been tentatively diagnosed as having hematoma-induced convulsion. Of the remaining 989 patients without convulsion, 40 randomly sampled patients were included in the n

Public health case studies in diabetes prevention and control: innovation, partnerships, and funding.

BACKGROUND: In 2006, we conducted case studies of 4 North Carolina local health departments (LHDs) that scored highly on an index of diabetes prevention and control performance, to explore characteristics that may serve as barriers or facilitators of diabetes prevention and control services. METHODS: Case studies involving in-depth interviews were conducted at 4 LHDs. Sites were selected on the basis of 2 variables, known external funding for diabetes services and population size, that were associated with performance in diabetes prevention and control in a 2005 survey of all North Carolina L

A dimension reduction approach for modeling multi-locus interaction in case-control studies.

Studying one locus or one single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at a time may not be sufficient to understand complex diseases because they are unlikely to result from the effect of only one SNP. Each SNP alone may have little or no effect on the risk of the disease, but together they may increase the risk substantially. Analyses focusing on individual SNPs ignore the possibility of interaction among SNPs. In this paper, we propose a parsimonious model to assess the joint effect of a group of SNPs in a case-control study. The model implements a data reduction strategy within a likelihood framew

Cancer chemoprevention by cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) blockade: results of case control studies.

Significant use of selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) blocking agents prescribed for the treatment of arthritis during 1999 to 2005 facilitates epidemiologic investigations to illuminate their chemopreventive effects against human cancer. We therefore conducted a set of case control studies of selective COX-2 blocking agents to determine their chemopreventive potential for the four major cancers: breast, prostate, colon, and lung. Newly diagnosed cases (323 breast cancer patients, 229 prostate cancer patients, 326 colon cancer patients, and 486 lung cancer patients) were ascertained during 200

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and blood transfusions: a meta-analysis of case-control studies.

A meta-analysis of five published case-control studies that examined the association between previous blood transfusions and Creutzfeld-Jakob disease was performed. The results demonstrated that controls were more likely (p < 0.001, odds ratio = 1.56, 95% confidence interval, 1.22-1.98) to have received previous blood transfusions (18.7%) than Creutzfeld-Jakob disease patients (12.9%), suggesting that selection bias of the control populations had occurred.

A Likelihood Approach to Proper Analysis of Secondary Outcomes in Matched Case-Control Studies.

Matched case-control studies are commonly employed in epidemiological research for their convenience and efficiency. Analysis of secondary outcomes can yield valuable insights into biological pathways and help identify genetic variants of importance. Naive analysis using standard statistical methods, such as least-squares regression for quantitative traits, can be misleading because they fail to account for unequal sampling induced by the case-control design and matching. In this paper, we propose novel statistical methods that appropriately reflect the study design and sampling scheme in the

Industrial point source emissions and incident breast and lung cancers: two case-control studies.

PURPOSE: Better understanding of the environment's role in breast cancer (BC) and lung cancer (LC) incidence is crucial for population health. Growing evidence suggests environmental factors may be relevant for these cancers. We performed two case-control analyses to determine associations between industrial point source emissions, which are proxies for ambient industrial point source-based environmental exposures, and incident BC and LC. METHODS: We obtained information for 5,801 female adults with BC, 5,250 adults with LC, and 47,956 cancer-free adult controls over 2010-2023. We linked indi

Association between herpesviruses and alzheimer's disease: a meta-analysis based on case-control studies.

Herpesviruses infection has been found to be implicated in the etiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the results remain controversial. This systematic meta-analysis was aimed to evaluate the relationship between Herpesviruses infection and the risk of developing AD. Relevant literature was searched from five databases, including CNKI, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library, to obtain case-control studies (published between the date of database establishment and February 2025; no language restrictions) that compared the Herpesviruses positivity in AD patients and healthy

Periodontitis and the risk of oral cancer: a meta-analysis of case-control studies.

OBJECTIVE: The current studies have yielded inconclusive findings regarding the connection between periodontitis  and oral cancer (OC). Therefore, our goal is to elucidate this relationship. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a thorough search of electronic databases (EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) up to September 2023. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was applied to assess study quality. To evaluate potential publication bias, both a funnel plot and Egger's test were employed.
