A novel Ceratomyxa species (Myxozoa: Cnidaria) infecting an Amazonian catfish.

Parasites are important organisms for the health of ecosystems. While the Amazon Basin is home to a great diversity of ichthyofauna, our knowledge of myxozoan diversity in the biome remains relatively limited. The present study describes a new myxozoan species, Ceratomyxa mandii n. sp., parasitizing the gallbladder of the Amazonian catfish Pimelodina flavipinnis (Pimelodidae) from the Solimões River, in the region of Manaus, Brazil. Light and electron microscopy,  small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) sequencing and phylogenetic analysis were performed. The new species exhibited worm-like pla

Intraosseous Catfish Barb Treated With Cannulated Drill in a Pediatric Patient.

Catfish injuries to the upper extremity following fishing activities are common in the southern United States, especially because noodling is commonplace in this region. Noodling is when a fisher will stick their hand into an area where a catfish is guarding its eggs and grab the catfish by its mouth. Different mechanisms of injury, including envenomation and spine embedment, can occur and ultimately lead to different patient presentations, including the retention of foreign bodies or infection. Literature reviews of catfish injuries primarily report the retention of foreign bodies within soft

Identification and characterization of bacteriophages specific to the catfish pathogen, Edwardsiella ictaluri.

AIMS: To identify and characterize bacteriophages specific for Edwardsiella ictaluri, the causative agent for enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC). METHODS AND RESULTS: Two bacteriophages were isolated that infect Edw. ictaluri. They both produce clear plaques, have icosahedral heads with a non-rigid tail, and are tentatively classified as Siphoviridae. Phages PhieiDWF and PhieiAU are dsDNA viruses with approximate genome sizes of 40 and 45 kb, respectively. The addition of 500 micromol l(-1) CaCl(2) enhanced phage titres. Both phages have a latent period of 40 min and an estimated burst size

Pharmacological actions of the venom of the Indian catfish (Plotosus canius Hamilton).

The venom of the common Indian catfish P. canius Hamilton (locally called 'Kanmagur') was examined for its pharmacodynamic activity. The LD50 of the venom in mice was found to be 3.9 mg/kg (ip). At lower doses, the venom produced a positive inotropic effect on toad and rabbit hearts, while at higher doses it produced cardiac arrest. In the isolated guinea pig auricle, the venom increased the rate and amplitude of contraction. The venom increased rat blood pressure--an action antagonised by alpha-adrenergic blocker (phenoxybenzamine). It reduced the rate and amplitude of rat and guinea pig resp

Regenerative outgrowth and distribution of the electroreceptive nerve fibers in the catfish Kryptopterus.

The ampullary electroreceptors on the trunk of Kryptopterus bicirrhis are induced and continuously maintained by a trophic substance released by their afferent nerve fibers. When the fibers are transected and the proximal stumps deflected to a new place, the regenerating fibers grow along new routes to the old electroreceptor sites and again induce organs there. The new routes consist of two sections. The first goes from the deflected stump end to other nearby running intact or degenerated nerves and fibers. In the second section, the regenerating fibers grow along these nerves and fibers to t

A discrete projection of the sacculus and lagena to a distinct brainstem nucleus in a catfish.

The projection of individual inner ear maculae of the catfish, Ancistrus spec. were labelled with horseradish peroxidases (HRP) or fluorescent dextran amines. In ostariophysans, fibres which innervate epithelia known or assumed to be sensitive to the pressure component of aquatic sound, i.e. acoustic fibres which come from the sacculus and lagena, have projections separate from those of the utriculus and canal organs. In Ancistrus afferents of sacculus and lagena terminate in an area which is distinct based on its cytoarchitecture. This area, previously believed to be a secondary auditory nucl

Magnesium requirement of fingerling channel catfish and signs of magnesium deficiency.

Purified casein diets with and without supplemental magnesium were fed to fingerling channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) in order to establish the essentially of this mineral. Fish fed the basal diet containing 0.004% magnesium developed deficiency signs such as poor growth, anorexia, sluggishness, muscle flaccidity and high mortality. After 3 weeks, two groups of fish fed the basal diet were converted to the supplemental diet containing 0.057% magnesium. Deficiency signs in these fish were alleviated almost immediately. In a second experiment, graded levels of magnesium sulfate were added t

Studies on the vitamin C requirements of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus).

Three feeding studies on the vitamin C requirements of channel catfish were conducted with practical and semipurified diets. In a long-duration study in which fish achieved almost a 4,000% increase in weight, 50 mg of l-ascorbic acid/kg diet was required for maximal growth and food efficiency. A diet stability study revealed that excessive losses in activity of l-ascorbic acid occurred when practical diets were stored for 16 weeks at 20 degrees. The typical scoliosis condition associated with severe vitamin C deficiency in fish occurred in the nonsupplemented groups in the study with practical

In vitro evaluation of vitamin D3 as an antiviral and immune modulator against novel yellow catfish calcivirus (YcCV) in channel catfish kidney (CCK) cell line in aquaculture.

This study investigates the antiviral, immunomodulatory, and antioxidant effects of VD3 on Channel catfish kidney (CCK) cells infected with Yellow Catfish Calicivirus (YcCV). CCK cells were treated with various concentrations of VD3 (0, 60, 120, 180 pM) and infected with YCCV, and 180 pM VD3 was determined as the optimal dose. The experimental groups included a control group, a YcCV group, and a VD3 + YcCV group. We assessed oxidative stress, immune response, and apoptosis in these groups. Our results demonstrated that VD3 significantly increased cell viability in the VD3 + YCCV group compared

A deeper look into the diversity of suckermouth catfishes (Mochockidae: Chiloglanis Peters 1868) of southern Africa, with the description of four new species.

Suckermouth catfishes of the genus Chiloglanis Peters 1868 are small and predominantly rheophilic fishes endemic to Africa. This genus is quite diverse, with over 70 species distributed across most river systems on the continent, except for the Cape Fold ecoregion and most of northern Africa. The present study undertook detailed genetic and morphological examination of suckermouth catfishes collected from multiple localities across the Zambezi River system. Results from this study support preliminary field observations that had identified considerable morphological and colour pattern variation

Prosthenystera oonastica n. sp. (Digenea: Callodistomidae) from ictalurid catfishes in southeastern United States and molecular evidence differentiating species in the genus across Americas.

Prosthenhystera oonastica n. sp. is described as a cryptic species from the gall bladder of three ictalurid catfishes, Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque), Ictalurus furcatus (Valenciennes), and Pylodictis olivaris (Rafinesque), in rivers in the southeastern United States. The species was originally named by Wilmer A. Rogers in 1979 but never formally described. Material used for the description consists of two specimens of Roger's original material and ten new specimens. We found no significant morphological features that are useful for discriminating between the new species and its closest rela

Microscopical Identification of Telocytes in the Fundic Stomach of African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus).

Clarias gariepinus catfish fundic stomach telocytes (TCs) were identified using light microscopy (LM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and immunohistochemistry. For LM, histochemical, hematoxylin, and eosin staining, as well as toluidine blue-stained semithin sections, were employed. These approaches revealed characteristic morphological features that differentiated TCs, which possessed a cell body with a nucleus and a telopode. Specifically, mucosal TCs were identified beneath the epithelium, within the lamina propria, and dispersed throughout the s

The missing effect of temperature on branchial O2 loss in an air-breathing catfish.

Air-breathing fish risk losing aerially sourced O2 to hypoxic water during branchial passage. Two adaptations thought to mitigate this loss are reduced gill size and increased blood O2 affinity. Both are affected by temperature in the facultative air-breathing catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, where increased temperature results in larger gills and reduced blood O2 affinity. Here, we tested whether branchial O2 loss increases with temperature, by measuring this loss and the aerial and aquatic gas exchange at 25°C and 33°C in near aquatic anoxia. Surprisingly, increasing temperature did not

New species of Myxobolus in potamodromous catfish from the eastern Amazon, Brazil.

The mapará (Hypophthalmus marginatus) is a commercially important fish in the Brazilian Amazon and has been described as a host for numerous myxosporid species. The integrated taxonomy of a new species, Myxobolus mickeyii n. sp., discovered in the urinary bladder of H. marginatus, is undertaken in this study. In 105 specimens of H. marginatus, plasmodia and myxospores were observed in the urinary bladder fluid, the myxospores measuring 20.5 (19.6-21.3) μm in length and 14.0 (13.2-14.9) μm in width. The posterior valves of the spore body were thick, with valvulogenic nuclei, endoplasmic reticul

Exposure to pyrogallol impacts the hemato-biochemical endpoints in catfish (Clarias gariepinus).

Pyrogallol is widely used in several industrial applications and can subsequently contaminate aquatic ecosystems. Here, we report for the first time the presence of pyrogallol in wastewater in Egypt. Currently, there is a complete lack of toxicity and carcinogenicity data for pyrogallol exposure in fish. To address this gap, both acute and sub-acute toxicity experiments were conducted to determine the toxicity of pyrogallol in catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Behavioral and morphological endpoints were evaluated, in addition to blood hematological endpoints, biochemical indices, electrolyte balan

Scale performance and composition in a small Amazonian armored catfish, Corydoras trilineatus.

The cory catfishes (Callichthyidae) are small, South American armored catfishes with a series of dermal scutes that run the length of the fish from posterior to the parieto-supraoccipital down to the caudal peduncle. In this study, we explore the anatomy and functional performance of the armored scutes in the three-striped cory catfish, Corydoras trilineatus. The lateral surface has a dorsal and a ventral row of scutes that interact at the horizontal septum. The scutes have little overlap with sequential posterior scutes (~33% overlap) and a deep ridge in the internal surface that connects to
