Effects of chemical pollutants on reproductive and developmental processes in Italian amphibians.

It is a widely held belief that environmental contaminants contribute to the decline of amphibian populations. By spending most of their early life in water and later stages on the land, amphibians face a constant risk of exposure to pesticides and other chemical pollutants in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. This review presents an overview of the studies carried out in Italian amphibians to highlight hazardous effects of bioaccumulation of chemical pollutants in juveniles and adults in various contaminated environments. Further, the studies in the laboratory setting assessing the e

The anatomy and feeding mechanism of the Japanese giant salamander (Andrias japonicus).

The fully aquatic Japanese giant salamander (Andrias japonicus) is a member of the Cryptobranchidae, and is currently distributed in western Japan, with other members of this group restricted to China and North America. Their feeding behaviour is characterized by a form of suction feeding that includes asymmetric movements of the jaw and hyobranchial apparatus. Previous studies on the North American species, Cryptobranchus alleganiensis, have suggested that this specialized jaw movement is produced by a flexible quadrate-articular joint combined with a loosely connected lower jaw symphysis inc

Genome size influences adaptive plasticity of water loss, but not metabolic rates, in lungless salamanders.

Many expressions of phenotype, such as physiological performance, integrate multiple underlying traits to function. Linking component traits to adaptive physiology thus gives insight into mechanisms of selection acting on performance. Genome size (C-value) is a trait that influences physiology in multiple taxa by exerting a nucleotypic effect, constraining cell size and cellular physiology such that whole-organism mass-specific metabolism is reduced with increasing C-value. We tested for this mechanism of C-value function acting in lungless salamanders, plus an unexplored potential mechanism o

First report of Euryhelmis parasites (Trematoda, Heterophyidae) in Africa: conservation implications for endemic amphibians.

In this study, we report, through molecular identification, the first African records of a digenean trematode parasite of the genus Euryhelmis. We recovered metacercariae encysted in an anuran, the endemic Moroccan painted frog (Discoglossus scovazzi), and a vulnerable caudate, the North African fire salamander (Salamandra algira), from four localities in North Africa (Morocco). Our records go back to the past century and have been confirmed in successive fieldwork seasons thereafter. Metacercarial stages of these parasites require amphibians as the last intermediate host, but the exact identi

Architectural gear ratio and muscle fiber strain homogeneity in segmented musculature.

In the segmented axial musculature of fishes and amphibians, the patterns of muscle fiber shortening depend on both the orientation of muscle fibers relative to the long axis of the body as well as the distance of fibers from the neutral axis of bending (vertebral column). In this study we use the relatively simple architecture of salamander hypaxial muscles to explore the separate and combined effects of these morphological features on muscle fiber strains during swimming. In Siren lacertina the external oblique (EO) muscle has more obliquely oriented muscle fibers and is located further from

The ultrastructure of photoreceptor cells in the pineal organ of the blind cave salamander, Proteus anguinus (Amphibia, Urodela).

We studied ultrastructure of the photoreceptor cells in the pineal organ of blind, depigmented, neotenic cave salamander, Proteus anguinus. Unlike in epigean vertebrates the outer segments of most photoreceptor cells consists of concentrically arranged lamellae, however; in few cells, the outer segments contain 7-9 plasma membrane disks. In both types of photoreceptor cells the outer segments enclose lumps of vesicles of different sizes. The photoreceptor cells of Proteus anguinus are similar to those in other cavernicolous fish species.

New fossil evidence from the Late Cretaceous of Europe (southern France) deepens the origin of Salamandridae (Urodela) and refines the biogeography of the family.

Salamandrids are today the most diverse family of salamanders of the Palearctic, including 146 species and 22 genera. The oldest fossil occurrences of the group are so far dated to the Paleocene (around 60 Myr ago), except for an isolated vertebra in the late Maastrichtian of Spain, although molecular studies place the origin of the group earlier, in the Late Cretaceous. New findings from the Upper Cretaceous of France fill this stratigraphic gap, significantly predating the previous oldest fossil occurrence of the group by 10 Ma. The material includes isolated vertebrae from four localities w

Testing the Impact of Prey Presentation Method on the Feeding Kinematics of Terrestrial and Aquatic Ambystomatidae.

In animal behavior, standardizing experimental protocols ensures a rigorous interpretation of the results. However, when working with multisource data, homogeneous standardization is often difficult to attain. This is the case for many studies on feeding kinematics where experimental protocols are carried out using similar but not identical methods. In particular, the impact of the way in which prey is presented remains poorly tested and understood. The aim of this study is to assess whether prey position and the way prey is presented have an impact on the kinematics of prey capture. To do so,

The Siren Song of Synergy.

In ancient Greek mythology, sirens were creatures of stunning beauty whose mystical songs led sailors to sail their boats onto hidden rocks and into total destruction. In this issue, Mason-Osann and colleagues present data in the context of acute myelogenous leukemia to suggest that while synergy may show initial attractions in drug combinations, it may carry with it hazards previously unforeseen. See related article by Mason-Osann et al., p. 95 (1).

Morphological variation in the vomer of aquatic and terrestrial spelerpini salamanders.

The vomer is an important tooth-bearing cranial bone in the lungless salamanders (Caudata: Plethodontidae) that serves different functional roles in aquatic versus terrestrial feeding. Vomerine tooth rows that run parallel with the maxillary teeth are thought to help grasp prey while expelling water from the mouth, while posterior extensions of the tooth row may help terrestrial taxa bring prey down the throat. We hypothesize that these two general morphological types will correlate with the habitat (aquatic vs. terrestrial) of adult salamanders. Alternatively, variation in form may be due to

The effects of thalidomide and two analogues on the regenerating forelimb of the newt.

Oral administration (3 mg/day) of thalidomide during the dedifferentiation and early limb-bud stages of newt forelimb regeneration produced a variety of specific limb deformities. Proximal and preaxial skeletal elements were the most severely malformed, e.g. preaxial hemimelia, severe proximal deformities, and preaxial polydactyly. Likewise, oral, daily doses (3 mg) of the teratogenic analogue, EM12, on days 7 and 8 following bilateral amputation caused the same incidence and type of forelimb abnormalities as did thalidomide. Conversely, the non-teratogenic analogue, EM87, when orally administ

Histochemical studies on the distribution of alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, 5-nucleotidase and ATPase in various reproductive tissues of certain digenetic trematodes.

Out of other functions performed by vitellaria in digenetic trematodes, their role in the formation of shell globules and shell membrane of the capsule, as well as in the excretion of iron with the help of vitamin C is very important. The present histochemical work shows the localization of certain enzymes in different parts of the reproductive system of ten species of trematodes viz.: Neopronocephalus triangularis Mehra, 1932; Glossimetra orientalis Mehra, 1937; Orientodiscus lobatus Srivastava, 1938; Eumegacetes artemii Mehra, 1935; Ganeo tigrinus mehra et Negi, 1928; Encyclometra caudata Do

A Deep Model Framework for Morphological Trait Imputation Across Taxonomic Groups.

Incomplete morphological trait data pose major hurdles for trait-based analyses, particularly when missing values, multicollinearity, and sparse sampling constrain inference. These issues limit our ability to quantify trait variation and explore broad patterns of functional differentiation across taxa. Here, we introduce FS-DeepRBFNet, which overcomes these pitfalls through integrating correlation-based feature selection with a dual-layer adaptive radial basis function (RBF) network. This end-to-end approach effectively reduces noise and captures both linear allometric trends and nonlinear mor

Immunohistochemistry of Salivary Enzymes and Morphology of Salivary Glands in Eurycea (Plethodontidae).

Although they potentially share ancestral heritage with the mental gland, salivary glands have not been studied thoroughly in plethodontid salamanders. Previous enzymatic studies in other families of amphibians have identified the presence of proteases and amylases, which are thought to be secreted from the intermaxillary gland and lingual gland. However, no such studies have been conducted in plethodontid salamanders, and the enzyme contents of these glands are poorly understood. We used immunohistochemistry to identify the presence of amylase, protease, and lipase in the glands of three spec

Innate immunity and stress physiology of eastern hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) from two stream reaches with differing habitat quality.

In addition to depriving amphibians of physical habitat requirements (e.g., shelter, moisture, and food), habitat modification may also have subtle effects on the health of amphibians and potentially precipitate interactions with other deleterious factors such as pathogens, contaminants, and invasive species. The current study was designed to evaluate the physiological state of imperiled giant salamanders, the eastern hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis), experiencing different surrounding land use that influences in-stream habitat quality. When we compared hellbenders from a stream reach

Is there a therapeutic role for octreotide in patients with ectopic Cushing's syndrome?

The largest published phylogenetic analysis of early limbed vertebrates (Ruta M, Coates MI. 2007.
