Burkitt's lymphoma of the skull base presenting as cavernous sinus syndrome in early childhood.

Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the skull base presenting with neuro-ophthalmologic abnormalities or cavernous sinus involvement is very rare in children. We have found only 13 reported cases of cavernous sinus involvement by lymphoma [1]. We report the case of the youngest child diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma of the cavernous sinus and sphenoid sinus, whose first presentation was cavernous sinus syndrome with neuro-ophthalmologic findings.

Cavernous sinus infection manifested by Horner's syndrome and ipsilateral sixth nerve palsy.

A 20-year-old man presented with a left sixth nerve paresis associated with ipsilateral Horner's syndrome several days after surgical drainage of a facial abscess. This unusual association between sixth nerve palsy and Horner's syndrome is presented and its neuroanatomic correlation is discussed.

Sinonasal Lymphoma Presenting as Cavernous Sinus Syndrome: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

A 37-year-old man presented with a 1-week history of diplopia. He was under investigation by otorhinolaryngology for left sinonasal malignancy after imaging of the paranasal sinuses had revealed a large homogenous mass in the left nasal cavity. His visual acuity was 6/9 in each eye with no relative afferent pupillary defect. The left pupil, though was mid-dilated and unresponsive to light. He had a left-sided ptosis. Extraocular movements of the left eye were restricted in all directions of gaze and there was with limited abduction, dextroelevation and dextrodepression of the right eye. A tran

Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma presenting as cavernous sinus syndrome.

Extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphomas are rare, highly aggressive tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) that commonly affect the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses. NK/T-cell lymphomas are associated with a poor prognosis, as they exhibit a wide range of unique clinical presentations and neuroimaging findings that are currently difficult to detect. Pathological examination is considered to be more reliable for defining the pathological entity of NK/T-cell lymphoma. Early testing for fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography may improv

Bing-Neel syndrome - Bilateral cavernous sinus lymphoma causing visual failure.

We report the case of a 68-year-old male with right eye vision loss secondary to a compressive optic neuropathy from Waldenstrom macroglobulinaemia relapse in both cavernous sinuses. Central nervous system involvement is extremely uncommon in lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma. Known as Bing-Neel syndrome, this has not been previously reported to present simultaneously in bilateral cavernous sinuses. We discuss the pathophysiology, diagnostic and neuroradiological features of Bing-Neel syndrome. In this case, there was marked clinical and radiological response to chemotherapy. As outcomes following tr

Acute cavernous sinus syndrome from metastasis of lung cancer to sphenoid bone.

Cavernous sinus syndrome is a rare entity in oncology reported only in occasional case reports. Optimal therapy is thus poorly defined with rapidly progressive disease dominating the picture. Management includes prompt diagnosis, attempts at stabilization of cranial nerve function, and aggressive control of central pain syndrome. Here, we report cavernous sinus syndrome secondary to the original squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. With common presenting causes of this syndrome being infection, thrombosis or tumor, it might seem that metastatic tumor would be expected in a patient with a cance

[Case of Lemierre syndrome associated with infectious cavernous sinus thrombosis and septic meningitis].

A 33-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of right exophthalmos, diplopia and left neck pain. Neurological examination revealed lateral and inferior disturbance of his right eye movement and the meningeal irritation sign. Cerebrospinal fluid showed elevated polynuclear cells. Enhanced CT and MRI revealed thrombophlebitis of the left internal jugular vein and bilateral cavernous sinuses. On the basis of these findings, he was diagnosed as having Lemierre syndrome associated with cavernous sinus thrombophlebitis and bacterial meningitis. After administration of antibiotics, his symp

Alternating orbital symptoms in cavernous sinus syndrome due to isolated sphenoid sinusitis.

A 40-year-old male with left-sided headaches, ptosis, proptosis and extra-ocular muscle paralysis developed right-sided headaches, proptosis, chemosis, diplopia, extra-ocular muscle paralysis and trigeminal sensory loss. An enhancing left orbital, intrasellar and parasellar cavernous nodule on magnetic resonance imaging progressed into a right cavernous sinus and orbital apex soft tissue mass. Cavernous sinus syndrome from sphenoid sinusitis resolved after endoscopic transnasal sphenoidotomy. This diagnostic complexity and its treatment options are discussed according to current literature.

Somatotropinoma infarction during octreotide therapy leading to bilateral cavernous sinus syndrome.

The cyclic somatostatin analog, octreotide, forms the mainstay of medical treatment for acromegaly. In addition to lowering circulating growth hormone levels and shrinking tumor size, octreotide may provide symptomatic relief of headaches associated with growth hormone secreting tumors. The majority of reported complications of octreotide therapy are gastrointestinal and metabolic. The present case illustrates the development of acute bilateral cavernous sinus syndrome with loss of eye movement bilaterally during octreotide therapy. Serial MRI examination suggest tumor infarction as the etiolo

Intracranial aspergillosis producing cavernous sinus syndrome and rupture of internal carotid artery.

A case of invasive, intracranial aspergillosis in a non-immunocompromised patient, complicated by rupture of the internal carotid artery due to fungal arteritis, is presented. The computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings are discussed. This is a rare condition with a poor prognosis and requires a high level of suspicion when paranasal sinus disease is detected.

ICHD-II diagnostic criteria for Tolosa-Hunt syndrome in idiopathic inflammatory syndromes of the orbit and/or the cavernous sinus.

A bibliographical search was conducted for papers published between 1999 and 2007 to verify the validity of International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD)-II criteria for the Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS) in terms of (i) the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); (ii) which steroid treatment should be considered as adequate; and (iii) the response to treatment. Of 536 articles, 48, reporting on 62 patients, met the inclusion criteria. MRI was positive in 92.1% of the cases and it normalized after clinical resolution. There was no evidence of which steroid schedule should be consider

Cavernous sinus syndrome from an internal carotid artery aneurysm in an infant with tuberous sclerosis.

Aneurysms are associated with tuberous sclerosis complex. We describe the first case of cavernous sinus syndrome from an intracavernous internal carotid artery aneurysm in a 9-month-old boy with tuberous sclerosis. The presence of an intracranial aneurysm should be considered in the differential diagnosis of children with tuberous sclerosis who develop cranial nerve deficits.

A Case of Cavernous Sinus Syndrome Due to Extranodal Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma accounting for approximately one-third of all cases. DLBCL can present as a lymph node or extranodal tumor. Cavernous sinus (CS) is a small but complex structure in which various arteries, sympathetic plexuses, and cranial nerves are passing through. Cavernous sinus syndrome (CSS) results from any disease process that affects CS including tumor, vascular disease, infection, or inflammation. Herein, we report a case of extranodal DLBCL diagnosed by skin biopsy presenting as CSS. A 58-year-old male presented
