Ascites syndrome (AS) is a metabolic disease that seriously affects the growth and development of broiler chickens. Intestinal microbiota play a significant role in the growth of broiler chickens. Therefore, further research on the relationship between AS and intestinal microbiota will help to better understand the impact of AS on broiler growth. In this study, 0.2% sodium chloride was added to the drinking water, which induced AS in broiler chickens, and we detected the influence of AS on the growth performance and cecal microbiota of broiler chickens. The results showed that AS significantly

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis of the caecum is a rare, but most frequently an abdominally localized disease. It often simulates inflammatory malignancy, rarely a periappendicular abscess or Chron's disease and is only exceptionally the cause of intestinal obstruction or bleeding.
CASE OUTLINE: The authors present a 35-year-old woman with an intrauterine device which remained inserted for over three years, causing the development of pain, fever, vaginal secretion and bleeding that continued even after the device was removed. Ultrasonography showed a tumorous mass of irregular form located close

Surgical disorders of the gastrointestinal tract of cattle occur occasionally, and veterinarians are challenged to determine an accurate diagnosis and treatment for these conditions. Although surgical diseases most commonly occur in the forestomachs (dislocated abomasum, reticuloperitonitis) and the colons (cecal dilation), this article focuses n lesions in the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum).

Respiratory mucosal immunity is critical to sustaining respiratory health and production performance in poultry. Damage to this barrier increases susceptibility to respiratory diseases in poultry and causes economic losses. In traditional Chinese medicine, Platycodon grandiflorum and Glycyrrhiza uralensis are commonly combined for the treatment of respiratory diseases. This study hypothesized that Platycodon grandiflorum and Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract (PGL) may modulate the cecal microbiota structure and concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in broilers, and potentially particip

INTRODUCTION: Appendicular actinomycosis is a rare disease produced by cecal appendix invasion by Actinomyces gender bacteria after a predisposing cause that disrupts mucosal barrier, such as acute appendicitis. The highest frequency appears in adults; however, there are cases in paediatric age described in literature. The aim of this article is to introduce a case of appendicular actinomycosis in a child with atypical presentation and to review the literature.

The ileocecal area is a relatively short segment of the gastrointestinal tract but may be affected by pathologic conditions that are either common throughout the gastrointestinal system or exclusive to this area. These conditions include benign and malignant tumors, inflammatory processes (appendicitis, diverticulitis, epiploic appendagitis, Crohn disease), infectious diseases, and miscellaneous conditions (cecal ischemia, typhlitis, cecal volvulus, duplication cyst). The various components of the ileocecal area (cecum, appendix, ileocecal valve, terminal ileum) are close to one another, so th

Malakoplakia is a rare chronic granulomatous disease found in the genitourinary tract, mainly. It is considered to be related to immunosuppression and/or infectious processes. We would like to present an operative case of cecal malakoplakia in a patient with a history of surgical resection and chemotherapy for cervical cancer. A 74-year-old female patient visited our hospital for 1-year follow-up after operation and chemo-radiotherapy for cervical cancer. An infiltrative mass of 6 cm, between the cecal base and the right psoas muscle, was observed on computed tomography. An ileocectomy was per

Chemokine receptors guide immune cells to specific organs during health and disease. The mRNA content of the chemokine receptors CCR2, CCR4, CCR5, CCR6, CCR7, CCR8, CCR9, CXCR4, CXCR5, and CX3CR1 in CD4(+) cells (T-helper cells) isolated from blood, bursa, cecal tonsil, spleen, and thymus and in CD8(+) cells (T-cytotoxic cells) isolated from blood, cecal tonsil, spleen, and thymus were investigated. The CD4(+) cells isolated from thymus had the highest amount of CCR7 and CCR8 mRNA. The CD4(+) cells isolated from bursa, cecal tonsil, and thymus had the highest amount of CCR5 mRNA. The CD4(+) ce

The HLA-B27 gene is a major risk factor for clinical diseases including ankylosing spondylitis, acute anterior uveitis, reactive arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis, but its mechanism of risk enhancement is not completely understood. The gut microbiome has recently been shown to influence several HLA-linked diseases. However, the role of HLA-B27 in shaping the gut microbiome has not been previously investigated. In this study, we characterize the differences in the gut microbiota mediated by the presence of the HLA-B27 gene. We identified differences in the cecal microbiota of Lewis rats transg

The clinical problems facing the medical practitioner in the presence of an aspecific granuloma of the caecum were studied. Clinical and aetiopathogenic aspects are analysed as are the indications for surgery. The difficulty of diagnosis and the importance of histopathological assessment for accurate diagnosis are emphasised.

The etiology of cecal diverticulitis remains unclear. The majority of diverticula are solitary and probably false and may be the result of the same degenerative process seen in the more common left-sided diverticulosis. A minority are true diverticula and may be of congenital origin. Cecal diverticulitis is clinically indistinguishable from acute appendicitis although patients with cecal diverticulitis tend to be older (average age, 40 years), have a longer duration of symptoms, and present less often with nausea and vomiting. In patients with previous appendectomy and in those with more indol

The global poultry industry has grown to the extent that the number of chickens now well exceeds the number of humans on Earth. Escherichia coli infections in poultry cause significant morbidity and economic losses for producers each year. We obtained 94 E. coli isolates from 12 colibacillosis outbreaks on Saskatchewan farms and screened them for antimicrobial resistance and biofilm formation. Fifty-six isolates were from broilers with confirmed colibacillosis, and 38 isolates were from healthy broilers in the same flocks (cecal E. coli). Resistance to penicillins, tetracyclines, and aminoglyc

Intussusception of the appendix into the caecum is an uncommon condition and the diagnosis is rarely made preoperatively. Specific anatomic requirements as well as pathological conditions that cause irritation or increased peristalsis should be present for this event to occur. A case is discussed in which the diagnosis was made preoperatively by barium enema and in which the lead point was a large inflammatory polyp due to Crohn's disease. It appeared in this case that inflation at the time of the barium enema resulted in reduction of the intussusception.

As a transitional zone between the small and large intestines the cecum occupies a special position in the intestine, anatomically and physiologically. This is expressed also in the manifestation of pathological processes and their symptomatology. Also the most common disease in the cecum is carcinoma. In addition, a number of other neoplasms and inflammatory processes occur. The symptomatology of all these diseases is relatively monotonous. Because of the local conditions, even the sequelae of space-occupying non-inflammatory diseases are concealed for a long time. Effective therapy is thereb

A four-year-old boy had a cecoanal intussusception prolapsing through the anus. A 4 x 4 cm cecal tumor served as the leading point of the intussusception. Laparotomy and histology revealed that the tumor was a solitary Burkitt's lymphoma of the cecum. Isolated Burkitt's lymphoma, as presented here, is rare, and such a combination has never been reported. Intussusception prolapsing through the anus and Burkitt's lymphoma are discussed, as well as a possible reason for the rarity of the condition.

Isolated cecal necrosis is a rare form of acute ischemic colitis and a rare cause of surgical abdomen. Behçet's disease is a multisystemic autoimmune condition which can induce vasculitis. This can result in cecal necrosis while disease involves colon vessels. We describe a patient with complicated Behçet's disease and ischemic colitis admitted to our hospital. Patient was a 62-year-old female with more accompanying diseases. Histopathologic findings confirmed the diagnosis of ischemic colitis and regarding patient's vision problem and skin lesions, rheumatologic tests were performed which wer
