Yersiniosis is a common bacterial zoonosis in Europe and healthy pigs are known to be the primary reservoir of human pathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica and Y. pseudotuberculosis. However, little information is available about the prevalence of these pathogens within pig batches at time of slaughter. The in vitro antibacterial activity of 19 antimicrobial agents against 40 strains of P aeruginosa was studied. The pharmacokinetics of netilmicin was studied in 14 patients with cystic fibrosis, aged 4-21 years (mean 16 years) during treatment of pulmonary exacerbations of pseudomonas infection. The patients received 24 courses of netilmicin (10 mg/kg/day) in combination with azlocillin (600 mg/kg/day), cefsulodin (200 mg/kg/day) or ceftazidime (150 mg/kg/day) for 9-14 days. Seven patients received two or three courses of different combinations. Serum and sputum concentrations of netilmicin were determined on day 2 and 6. Tonsil samples from 139 slaughter pigs were examined for the presence of pathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica by enrichment procedures based on the standard method ISO 10273:2003. A novel OXA-type enzyme, named OXA-46, was found to be encoded by a gene cassette inserted into a class 1 integron from a multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolate.
