Inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) aneurysm is a rare type of visceral aneurysm. We present the case of a 77-year-old woman with an IMA aneurysm in the setting of chronic complete occlusion of the origins of her celiac artery and superior mesenteric artery. The patient was managed successfully with surgical excision of the IMA aneurysm with an end-to-side anastomosis of the IMA to the left common iliac artery. The case report is followed by a discussion based on a literature review of the few previously reported occurrences of IMA aneurysm.

Thrombosis of the celiac artery trunk is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain. Thrombosis of the celiac artery carries a high mortality and morbidity when the diagnoses and treatment are delayed. It is frequently associated with other cardiovascular events. The most common etiology is atherosclerosis. 20-30% of cases may have symptoms of chronic mesenteric ischemia. Main goal of the treatment is to reestablish the diminished or stopped mesenteric blood flow and to avoid end-organ ischemia. Essential thrombocythemia is a chronic myeloproliferative disorder characterized by marked increase in th…

PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the degree of celiac artery (CA) stenosis and the secondary changes in collateral branches in patients with CA compression (CAC) by CT and to classify patients by the combination of the two imaging features.
METHODS: Patients with CAC identified by contrast-enhanced CT from January 2012 to December 2013 were retrospectively enrolled and divided into the symptomatic group and asymptomatic group. CA stenosis was categorized as mild, moderate, or severe, and collateral circulation as invisible, visible, or prominent. The correlation be…

Unlike other visceral artery aneurysms, pancreaticoduodenal artery aneurysms (PDAAs) should be treated regardless of their size. There are no reports on PDAA associated with celiac artery (CA) dissection. We, here, report the case of a patient with a ruptured PDAA with concomitant CA dissection. A 44-year-old Korean man presented to the emergency room of another hospital 29 days ago due to a sudden onset of abdominal pain. Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a large right retroperitoneal hematoma and CA dissection. Subsequently, aortography revealed no specific bleedi…

A 45-year-old female presented at our hospital with a one-day history of upper abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed that the root of the celiac artery was obstructed and that a large hematoma was present in the retroperitoneum. The patient was diagnosed with retroperitoneal hemorrhage associated with the rupture of an inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery aneurysm, which was caused by increased blood flow in the pancreaticoduodenal arterial arcade. Because the patient's general condition was stable, she was managed conservatively and discharged on achieving remission after…

This is a report of two patients with bile duct cancer and periampullary cancer with celiac axis occlusion who underwent pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy and pancreaticoduodenectomy, respectively. Preoperative arteriography demonstrated complete obstruction of the celiac axis. The arterial blood flow to the liver, spleen, and stomach was sustained through the pancreaticoduodenal arcades and collaterals from the superior mesenteric artery. Therefore, reconstruction of the celiac axis circulation was required before division of the gastroduodenal artery. An autograft of the saphenous v

BACKGROUND: Distal pancreatectomy with celiac axis resection (DP-CAR) is essential for achieving R0 resection in pancreatic body cancer but … ch following a Kocher maneuver. The superior mesenteric artery is isolated first. Subsequently, the celiac artery (CA) is taped, sparing the inferior phrenic artery, and clamped for early inflow control. Clinical and perioperative outcomes were analyzed.
RESULTS: Of the 14 patients analyzed, the median operation time was 469 min, and the median blood loss was …

PURPOSE: Spontaneous celiac artery dissection (CeAD) is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain. This study examined computed tomography (CT) scan findings, natural course, and outcomes of spontaneous CeAD.
METHODS: Sixty patients who underwent CT scan and were diagnosed with CeAD between April 2003 and June 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with aortic dissection (n = 25), iatrogenic CeAD (n = 6), traumatic CeAD (n = 1), and celiac artery (CeA) aneurysm (n = 4) and those undergoing noncontrast-enhanced CT scans (n = 1) were excluded. The remaining 23 consecutive patients were divided…

(1) Background. The vertebral level of origin (VLO) of the celiac trunk (CT) and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) has been scarcely investigated. (2) Method. This study used 107 computed tomography angiograms and an eleven type grading system to classify the VLO of the CT and SMA. Each of the T12-L2 vertebra were divided in three horizontal levels. The intervertebral discs were considered distinct levels. (3) Results. The VLO of the CT ranged from the upper third of the T12 vertebra to the lower third of the L1 vertebra. The VLO of the SMA ranged from the lower third of the T12 vertebra to the

We report a case of a 17-year-old male with Behcet's disease (BD) with giant celiac artery aneurysm and impending rupture. Over the past 8 weeks, patient began having intermittent back and abdominal pain that worsened and became persistent over the past few days. This was accompanied by anorexia and non-bilious vomiting. Computed tomography angiogram (CTA) demonstrated a wide neck large celiac artery aneurysm (60 mm diameter). Endovascular repair of the aneurysm was performed using stent graft of the aorta and transcatheter coil embolization of the aneurysm sac. Technical success was confirmed…

Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) is the chronic symptomatic compression of the celiac artery by the median arcuate ligament. A known potential sequela of MALS is celiac artery aneurysm, which could predispose the diseased artery to dissection. However, the presence of celiac artery dissection and MALS is yet to be reported. Here, we present a case of MALS with a coincident celiac artery aneurysm and dissection.

BACKGROUND: Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) is a rare condition due to compression of the celiac artery (CA) by an anatomically abnormal median arcuate ligament. With ultrasonography (US) as first-line diagnostic modality in patients with unclear abdominal pain, there is limited data on its diagnostic performance in MALS.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the value of CA peak systolic velocity (PSV) in the workup of patients with suspected MALS.
METHODS: Patients with diagnosis of MALS between 2009 and 2019 were referred by Department of Visceral Surgery after clinical and gastroenterologica…

Celiac artery (CA) injuries are very rare and are often associated with high mortality. These injuries are associated more often with penetrating trauma rather than blunt trauma injury. Our case highlights a blunt trauma injury of CA in a hemodynamically stable patient without any symptoms that was treated conservatively.

Postoperative celiac artery stenosis (CAS) rarely occurs in the absence of vascular injury or pseudoaneurysm after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). Because of its low incidence, the optimal treatment for non-traumatic postoperative CAS is unknown. Here, we show a case of CAS possibly due to exacerbated median arcuate ligament compression after PD. The purpose of this report is to describe this rare complication and its successful endovascular treatment with review of literatures.

The aim of the paper is to determine the incidence of celiac artery compression (CAC) based on computed tomography (CT) scan and correlate the findings to the clinical presentation of patients presenting for CT scan in a hospital. Abdominal CT scans of patients were reviewed between September 2010 and November 2010. CAC was diagnosed if the celiac axis appeared to have a hook or U-shaped appearance with stenosis. The medical records of the patients were reviewed for gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea), as well as food fear and weight loss. Patie…

Celiac axis stenosis is frequently associated with pancreaticoduodenal artery aneurysms. Although the cause of stenosis was not clear in most of the reported cases, compression of the median arcuate ligament of the diaphragm was found to be responsible for the stenosis in 7 of 42 reported cases of this type of aneurysm. We report a case of aneurysm caused by compression of the median arcuate ligament of the diaphragm and celiac plexus. An asymptomatic 43-year-old Japanese man was admitted with a low echoic lesion in the uncus of pancreas. Computed tomographic scan and angiogram revealed stenos
